Contract details released for UCF coordinators Ted Roof, Tim Harris Jr.

New UCF defensive coordinator Ted Roof and offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. are set to make a combined $925,000 this upcoming season, according to contracts obtained by the Sentinel. Roof will earn $400,000 this season in annual compensation, while Harris is set to make $525,000. Both will see their salaries increase in 2025-26, with Roof set to make $750,000 and Harris $600,000.

While this season’s figures are well below the $1.15 million Roof made at Oklahoma last season, his contract is incentive-laden in the first year, paying the 60-year-old coach:

  • $20,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top two in Big 12 in opponent points per possession
  • $15,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top four in Big 12 in opponent points per possession
  • $20,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top two in Big 12 in takeaways per game
  • $15,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top four in Big 12 in takeaways per game
  • $20,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top two in Big 12 in third-down defense
  • $15,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top four in Big 12 in third-down defense
  • $20,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top two in Big 12 in opponent yards per rush
  • $15,000 if UCF’s defense ranks among the top four in Big 12 in opponent yards per rush
UCF ranked ninth in the conference in opponent points per possession, 10th in takeaways per game, eighth in third-down defense and 11th in opponent yards per rush last season.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma finished in the top four in all these categories.

Roof and Harris also receive an additional half month’s salary if UCF plays in a bowl game without winning a conference championship game. They would receive an entire month’s pay if the Knights play in a bowl game after winning the conference championship.

If he chooses to leave after the 2024 season but before the 2025 season, Harris is responsible for a buyout equal to 50% of the remaining balance on his contract. Although, he owes the school nothing if he accepts a head coaching job.

UCF’s highest-paid assistant coaches last season were Addison Williams ($700,000), who had been promoted to defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, and Darin Hinshaw ($600,000) who was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

During the offseason, UCF’s coaching staff underwent significant changes. Williams, who had been promoted to defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, assumed a co-defensive coordinator role. Hinshaw, who was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, became co-offensive coordinator.

Gotta admit I don't know how paying these guys this little is legal. Fair market value for a Big 12 defensive coordinator, especially one of Roof's stature is $1 million minimum.

I can only assume this means Roof is classified as linebackers coach and Addison as the defensive coordinator "on paper." Roof assumed David Gibbs ($450k) contract and Trevon Reed got Ernie Sims ($250k) contract.

Addison's contract runs out this season, so Gus will swap contracts between the two in 2025.

Johnny Dawkins Agrees to Contract Extension through 2026-27

The news was first reported by Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel.

The UCF Knights men’s basketball head coach has signed a contract extension that will keep him around through the 2026-27 season. Dawkins’ annual compensation will jump up from $1.7 million to $2 million this upcoming season and it will eventually become $2.2 million for the 2026-27 season.

In a statement, Dawkins expressed his happiness at being given the extension

This UCFan will support the players and coaches while they are with UCF and beyond. I'm tired of the UCFair weather noobie UCFans.

Demetrius Campbell grew up playing basketball, but after making the move from Maine to Florida he discovered football is where he has a big-time future.

The 6-foot-9 offensive tackle from Orlando Christian Prep has seen his recruitment blow up this year and he just wrapped up his first official visit to UCF.

"I think the main thing is I got to spend a lot of time with the players and get the inside scoop about everything," Campbell said about the visit. "It all checked out. It's a great place."

His player host was Adrian Medley.

"He said he loved it (at UCF)," Campbell said. "He's been here a long time. He fell in love with it. He likes Coach (Herb) Hand."

UCF's offensive line coach is the primary reason he's so high on the Knights.

"My connection with Coach Hand is just a great connection," Campbell said. "He's a great guy... I know he's produced a lot of NFL linemen. Also, Coach (Gus) Malzahn. I really love him too. Great people."

OT: Sad but crazy story regarding UF baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan

Somehow I never heard about this, but this was making the rounds on TikTok and Twitter tonight as Florida was losing to LSU in the College World Series Championship.

In spring 2021, Kevin O'Sullivan, who I guess was divorced himself, was having an affair with a booster's wife. The booster husband then killed himself and their two kids. I'm not entirely sure about the timelines. Reports from the time said the couple was estranged, but some say it was because of that wife's affair with O'Sullivan? Another rumor (from the SECRant board linked below) claim there was a suicide note that blamed O'Sullivan?

So after the kids were killed, the wife then married O'Sullivan and she went on a campaign to shield autopsy records from the media.

Here's an old message board thread about the rumors:

***Russell Sandefer commits to UCF Baseball: 'It's always been a dream school' ⚾

n2t9ymwlivel9vxdmiuy

Russell Sandefer didn't need much time to think about it.

The Saint Leo freshman right-handed pitcher entered the transfer portal on June 7. Less than 24 hours later, he committed to Rich Wallace and UCF Baseball.

Sandefer said he initially intended to return to the Division II school for his sophomore year, but reversed course after Lions head coach Rick O'Dette took the job at Florida Southern, one of their rivals in the Sunshine State Conference.

Currently away from home playing in a summer league, the former Tampa Robinson pitcher was surprised by the influx of attention he received.

"I'm playing in the Appalachian League with the Danville Otterbots, so I was actually on a bus traveling to Greeneville, Tenn.," Sandefer said. "I finished my paperwork and got compliance to approve everything, then I put out the tweet. I was immediately getting hit up by a lot of schools. It was crazy. I never got that experience in high school. I wasn't heavily recruited. I was getting lots of phone calls.

"We had a game that night, so I put my phone on do not disturb. I checked my phone after the game and had a bunch of texts. UCF was definitely one of the bigger ones. It's always been a dream of mine to go there."

Recruiting in college baseball often starts early in high school with many players making commitments during their freshman year.

"I was definitely a late bloomer," Sandefer said. "I was undersized my first two years of high school. Then after my sophomore year I hit a growth spurt. I had a really good junior summer. The coach's son at Saint Leo, I played summer ball with him so (O'Dette) was at all our games. I never thought anything of it. But I was throwing the hardest I ever threw. At the end of our summer I was being recruited by Saint Leo. I was talking with a JUCO potentially, but I really didn't have anything else. I was excited to go play baseball at Saint Leo."

Sandefer had a standout freshman campaign, finishing with a 5-2 record and 3.35 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched with eight starts and 11 overall appearances. Saint Leo had an outstanding season, hosting a NCAA Regional.

"I thought it was a great year," Sandefer said. "I don't think the expectations were very high for me. We've got a great strength coach and we put in the work. I don't think I could have asked for a better freshman year. The guys on the team will be friends for the rest of my life. It was definitely a season to remember."

His most remarkable stat: Allowing just four walks. With 39 strikeouts, that puts Sandefer's strikeout-to-walk ratio at 9.75, impressive at any level.

"Honestly, in high school I had pretty solid command but it didn't jump off the page," Sandefer said. "It was a mindset change getting into college. The Saint Leo coaches really instilled confidence in everybody, just a mindset of attacking. I think that really helped me."

Of his pitching arsenal, Sandefer favors his fastball. He touches the low 90s and tops out at 94.

"I throw a two-seam and get a good amount of run," he said. "I'm mainly a fastball/slider pitcher. That's been pretty good for me."

As for his recent portal recruitment, Sandefer said he was laser focused on UCF as soon as he got the offer. Other schools involved included Oklahoma State, Florida Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Jacksonville, Purdue and Austin Peay.

"I grew up in Tampa and a lot of people go to UCF," Sandefer said. "UCF has always been a school that if I didn't play baseball I might have gone to. Another thing is my head coach is pretty close with UCF's pitching coach (Drew Thomas). When I entered the portal, I called my (Saint Leo) head coach and he told me the UCF guy is legit.

"I talked it over with my parents and we decided it was in the best interest to commit to UCF. I wanted to stay in Florida. Especially this first year at Saint Leo, I appreciated being closer to home. So I called Coach Wallace back pretty quickly and told him I wanted to be a Knight. He was super excited."

Sandefer says he's been a starter throughout his baseball career, but he's also open to any possibilities.

"I just want to pitch and help this team win," he said. "Do whatever it takes. Even at Saint Leo, I was a starter but would come out of the bullpen to help win games. My biggest priority is to help the team."

In addition to Sandefer, UCF has transfer portal commitments from LHP Dakota Stone (JU), RHP Isaac Williams (JU) and OF Chase Krewson (Duke).
