OT/Updated: Orlando Sentinel writers are on strike

There was a social media barrage earlier today from Sentinel journalists I follow.

The union campaign at the Sentinel is the latest part of an upsurge in NewsGuild organizing drives in newsrooms across the country — including recent victories at the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald, Jacksonville’s Florida Times-Union, the Hartford Courant, The Chicago Tribune and Maryland’s Capital Gazette. Within the past week, staff at the Palm Beach Post, Palm Beach Daily News, Naples Daily News, The News-Press, The Banner and the Marco Eagle also announced they are unionizing.

==============

We, the journalists of the Orlando Sentinel, are forming a union.

For more than 100 years, Orlando Sentinel journalists have worked to tell the story of Central Florida. As our name reminds all, we keep watch. We hold local leaders accountable, celebrate our region’s triumphs, and reveal its failures. Our sports, arts and culture reporting is unmatched, and our coverage through El Sentinel, Pro Soccer USA and GrowthSpotter demonstrates our commitment to serving all corners of our city.

But as Orlando grows, we are doing more with less. In the last 15 years, our newsroom has shrunk from more than 300 to fewer than 90. The Orlando Sentinel built an award-winning, nationally recognized team with incomparable institutional knowledge and unrivaled connections to Central Florida — and it has been gutted, with senior journalists and talented young reporters pushed out as our corporate management in Chicago and our largest shareholders have been rewarded. In January alone, the Sentinel lost 130 years of journalism expertise.

The return of Nancy Meyer as our publisher and the appointment of Julie Anderson as our editor has proven just how indispensable a vibrant and aggressive Orlando Sentinel is to Central Florida. Under their leadership, we have returned to the kind of watchdog journalism that challenges the powerful and connects our community through insight, knowledge and truth.

But our future ultimately hinges on the decisions of distant corporate leaders who have hollowed out newsrooms across the country, choosing to leave the communities they are supposed to serve in the dark. Like the other Tribune newspaper unions, we are deeply concerned by the potential takeover of hedge fund Alden Global Capital. Alden has been called the “grim reaper” and “Darth Vader” of the newspaper industry because it harvests its properties for short-term profit and leaves the carcasses to rot.

This union is our way of defending the future of our newsroom — and Central Florida’s access to quality local journalism.

We must invest in ourselves. With a unified voice, we seek a newsroom that reflects our community with enough journalists to tell its stories. We seek respect for the contributions of our veteran journalists, a path of growth for our early- and mid-career journalists, and stability for all. We seek fair compensation and benefits, a healthy work-life balance and the opportunity to grow professionally.

By forming this union, we pledge to work with the leadership at the Orlando Sentinel and Tribune Publishing to maintain our highest standards of journalism and our role keeping watch over Central Florida. We are asking Tribune Publishing to voluntarily recognize the Sentinel Guild as a member of The NewsGuild-CWA.

In solidarity and with respect,

***UCF targeting Joe Girardi***

chcf11rakdgeh3xcimoi

The University of Central Florida is targeting Joe Girardi as its new head baseball coach sources tell UCFSports.com, a seismic move sure to send shockwaves through the baseball community.

UCF athletic director Terry Mohajir interviewed several coaches for the position, including head coaches and top assistants at the college level, ultimately focusing on Girardi to lead the Knights into the Big 12.

One of the biggest names in Major League Baseball as both a player and manager, Girardi would come to Orlando as a four-time World Series Champion with the New York Yankees. That includes three rings as a player (1996, 1998, 1999) and once as their manager (2009).

A native of Peoria, Ill., and graduate of Northwestern University, Girardi spent 15 seasons in the big leagues as a catcher with the Chicago Cubs (1989-1992), Colorado Rockies (1993-95), New York Yankees (1996-1999), the Cubs again (2000-2002) and St. Louis Cardinals (2003).

Following his playing career in 2004, Girardi worked television broadcasts for the Yankees on the YES Network. In 2005, Girardi accepted an assistant coaching position with the Yankees as bench coach.

Girardi made his managerial debut with the Florida Marlins in 2006, guiding the low-payroll team to playoff contention and was honored with National League Manager of the Year. He was hired as manager of the Yankees in 2008, leading the team to a World Series Championship in 2009.

He coached in New York through the 2017 season and had five more playoff appearances (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017), including three trips to the American League Championship Series (2010, 2012, 2017).

Though the Yankees were one game away from the World Series in 2017, team management opted to move on from Girardi. After a decade in New York, Girardi relocated his family to Florida while he contemplated his next move. He spent 2018 and 2019 as an analyst at MLB Network while also coaching his high-school age son in travel baseball.

Girardi returned to MLB in 2020 as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, spending two and a half years in the city before a parting of ways in June 2022. Since then, Girardi went back to the broadcast booth as an analyst for Chicago Cubs games on Marquee Sports.

Though Girardi has never coached below the Major League level, sources told UCFSports.com in recent weeks he was intrigued by the idea of coaching college baseball and had a keen eye on the UCF job. Those roots can be traced to his two summers working with young players in the Florida Travel Baseball (FTB) organization.

Interestingly, in early 2020 Girardi attended a UCF baseball game at John Euliano Park. He was close to the family of UCF player Matthew Archer, a freshman at the time who later transferred to Lynn University. Matt's father, Tom, had worked as a longtime pro scout with the Chicago White Sox.

Girardi, 58, and his wife Kim have three children: Serena, Dante and Lena. Dante just finished his junior season as a college baseball player at FIU, starting nearly every game the last three years as an infielder. Lena is one of the top women's basketball recruits in the Class of 2025 with offers from dozens of schools, UCF included.

If the hire of Girardi becomes official, UCF aims to show they're serious about baseball as they move into the Big 12.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, baseball would have been regarded as UCF's premier sport. The peak came in 2001 when UCF earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament while ranked as high as No. 7. Since moving to Conference USA (2006-2013) and later the American Athletic Conference (2014-2023), UCF Baseball has struggled to maintain consistency with just one conference championship (2017) and three total NCAA Regional appearances (2011, 2012, 2017).

With Girardi, UCF would have a proven champion in the dugout and a name that brings instant credibility on the recruiting trail.

Vandy to UDub to UCF: Ethan Barr’s unique journey: 3 months, 3 programs and a trip to the College Football Playoff

IMG_1711-scaled-e1706832989305-1024x682.jpg

On Thanksgiving weekend, Ethan Barr played in the final game of his four-year career at Vanderbilt, recording seven tackles in a 48-24 loss at Tennessee to wrap up a 2-10 season with the Commodores.

Six weeks later, the linebacker from Flower Mound, Texas, was on the sidelines at NRG Stadium in Houston wearing a Washington Huskies jersey as a member (sort of) of a team playing for a national championship.

Now, one month later, Barr is enrolled at UCF and preparing for spring football with the Knights.

“I’d say it’s been … I don’t really know a word besides just, crazy, honestly,” Barr said of his last two months. “I’m really happy it happened, but it was a little stressful, I would say. It was tough.”

Barr’s odyssey began in early December when he announced his decision to transfer to Washington for his final season of eligibility. He arrived in Seattle on Dec. 31 and began the process of getting acclimated to his new school.

“I was just super excited about what was to come with the coaching staff and that team,” Barr said. “And everything that Washington has to offer.”

Two days after returning from the national championship game, Barr was in the middle of a nutrition meeting when he received the stunning news: Washington coach Kalen DeBoer was being discussed as a candidate for the Alabama job. Reports on social media indicated he could soon be on the move.

“I was like, ‘Are you kidding? You’re kidding.’ It seemed like a joke,” Barr said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

DeBoer ultimately did take the Alabama job, explaining his decision in an emotional team meeting. Barr started to weigh his options after DeBoer didn’t say anything to him about following the coaches to Alabama. He could stay at Washington under a new coaching staff and take a gamble on how it might shake out or he could jump back into the transfer portal despite having just unpacked his clothes in Seattle two weeks earlier.

He picked the latter — and in the last few weeks made his way to the opposite side of the country with his fiancee, Delaney, and 16-week-old puppy after committing to UCF on Jan. 19 to cap off a wild two-month span.

Barr first entered the portal in late November after four seasons at Vanderbilt, where he registered 219 tackles, including a career-high 85 tackles in 2021. A semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy — often referred to as the “Academic Heisman” — Barr said he loved his time with the Commodores and that playing there was among the best decisions he’d ever made. But with one year of eligibility remaining, he felt ready for a new challenge.

When he initially entered the portal, Cincinnati, Baylor, Houston, Washington and UCF all reached out with quick offers. But Barr took just two visits, to UCF and Washington. He eventually picked Washington, drawn to the program’s coaches and culture. He had no idea he’d be searching for a new school just a month later.

“I don’t think anybody suspected (DeBoer leaving),” he said. “I honestly wouldn’t have gone there if I had any sort of feeling that he was going to be leaving after the season.”

As Barr hopped back into the portal to weigh his options, he quickly circled back to UCF — a close runner-up to the Huskies the first time around.

“Coach (Gus) Malzahn hit me back up and reached out, telling me that they still had a spot,” Barr said of the process. “It was really tough choosing Washington at the end of the day (initially) because I really did like Orlando. I liked UCF, all the coaches were amazing and just the opportunity that was available here. So whenever I came available again, I kind of felt like it was a sign that maybe this is where I’m meant to be.”

There is a familiar face at UCF, as well. Two days before Barr announced his commitment, Malzahn hired Ted Roof as the Knights’ defensive coordinator. Roof coached Barr in 2020 as a freshman at Vanderbilt in his one season as the Commodores defensive coordinator.

“It’s kind of crazy and honestly kind of cool,” Barr said. “When that happened, too, I was like, ‘This is going to be awesome.’ A full circle moment, getting back and connecting with coach Roof and being able to play for him again.”

Now Barr will focus on learning the playbook and diving into offseason workouts to prepare for a season he hopes will set him up with an opportunity to play in the NFL.

In the short term, Barr is eager to take a breath and get settled with Delaney and their dog after a tumultuous three months.

“I really wouldn’t wish (this process) upon anybody to have to do it,” he said. “It’s not something that you would necessarily choose, (but) yes, I think we can make it through just about anything.”

ASU Game Seating Options

I know we just found out the details of this game yesterday. However I reached out to an ASU ticket rep yesterday about premium seating options. Apparently club and loge seating doesn't open up until July or August depending on season ticket sales, but here were the details on suites:

"We do sell 16 and 22 person suites on a single game basis. Our 16 person indoor suites for that game are $2500 and our 22 person indoor and outdoor suites are $4500. The indoor suites have 8 seats and then 4 barstool seats and 4 standing room tickets. The 22 person indoor and outdoor suites have 12 outdoor seats and 4 barstools and then 6 standing room tickets."

On food and beverage in the suite:

"Food/drink would be additional. Most people budget around 1k depending on what you get. We do sell beer and wine in the suites. Mixed drinks are available in the hall of the suites from a drink station."

Not sure if there is interest from anyone in the Dungeon to do something like this. It would probably only make sense to do up to the seated amount in the suite.

Let me know if anyone is interested, if not I'll probably just wait until club seats open up.
