Gary Patterson to return to coaching

Coupling a Gus Malzahn offense with a Gary Patterson defense would be one h*ll of a marriage. Two innovators at one program at the same time.

Not certain Patterson would accept a coordinator job, but I assume he would. I am also uncertain whether he can risk taking a head coaching gig at this time. He is scheduled to become eligible for induction into the CFB Hall of Fame next season.

But he must to be out of coaching for three years (like Mac Brown) to be inducted while still coaching

POST GAME INTERVIEWS: UCF Men's Soccer season ends with a loss in the NCAA Tournament

A season that saw many firsts for UCF Men's Soccer ended in disappointment with a 3-2 (2OT) loss at home versus Vermont in round 2 of the NCAA Tournament.

After scoring a late equalizer, the Knights were unable to break through, and a goal deep into the 2nd OT sealed the win for the Catamounts.

Head Coach Scott Calabrese and Midfielder AJ Seals spoke with the media post match, as captured by Trace Trylko.

I am still Excited

It's our last week of the 2023 campaign. If UCF wins Saturday , we go bowling. For those of us who remember UCF's very first bowl in Hawaii , it's still special making a bowl . It's still important even if UCF doesn't get ranked nor makes the playoffs. Every win is a thrill and every loss is heart break. That's why most of us love this game.

I am going Saturday . I am sporting my Canaveral Blue Citronaut polo . And , when UCF beats Houston, I will buy those bowl tickets, because it is still special regardless of record. You know it's easy being a Bama fan or Georgia these days . The system benefits your team. It's a bit rougher being a Knight lately .

Remember these days because I see a day in the not so distant future where we are in the hunt the XII title and in the discussion for being in the 12 team playoff. I hope all my fellow Knights can hold onto these humble days and stay humble when success comes smiling on us. See you guys Saturday .

Conspiracy theory Re Yesterdays game

Everyone loves a great conspiracy theory , this is not one of them. 😆 Every team the conference can put into a bowl game ,the Conference gets some coin and exposure. You had two teams needing their 6th win yesterday to get over that hump. One of those teams will be facing potentially a team headed for the conference championship in their last game and the other will be facing likely the worst team in the conference in their final game .

Now I don't know if Yormark puts a call out to the officiating crew or not,but I heard he was nearby at the amazing BBQ restaurant meeting with the crew and said ,fellas, if yall can keep Texas Tech in the game and give them a nudge to get that 6 win for them.this week , that would be great. You just have to make enough calls to slow down and stall UCF. Do that and you can have all.the brisket you want. Next week we need to make sure to slow down Houston to get UCF bowl eligible. Whada say guys? All you can eat brisket ?

My theory is this I dont know what what went down because they hosed Kobe on crucial drives . I have another theory that Yormark put remote controlled electro magnets in the foot balls used by Boomer when he kicked the missed FGs and PAT while also magnetizing the goal post in opposite polarity of the ball those making the ball divert away from the post . It's gotta be that!

I got no proof other than motive. Nudge the game to get Texas Tech this week and get UCF in next week. This way nobody is eliminated. More BigXII bowl eligible teams .

For reals , we lost the game because of a number factors not the refs alone . I do believe they did influence the game though .

"Goes without saying" (Gus to Arkansas) @lobocane

"1. Gus Malzahn is the native son who needs to save Arkansas football

In my opinion, Arkansas does not fire Sam Pittman without assurances of if the Razorbacks can get their top choice. It goes without saying that top candidate would be UCF head coach Gus Malzahn. Although he has not been as good in Orlando as he was previously at Auburn, and briefly at Arkansas State before that, Arkansas is Malzahn's alma mater. He played wide receiver there in the mid-1980s.

I don't know if this hire would have guys like Nick Saban and Kirby Smart shaking in their boots, but I can name at least three teams that would absolutely hate this: Missouri, Texas A&M and in some capacities, maybe even Texas? Auburn has already moved on Malzahn years ago. They may have stupidly gotten off the Gus Bus, but hiring Hugh Freeze after the Bryan Harsin disaster seems good.

To me, Malzahn is the clear and obvious choice. We have seen him coach at a remarkably high level at Auburn before. In the last few weeks, UCF has played considerably better since making the leap up to the Power Five during its first season in the Big 12. Arkansas has big-pocketed boosters and honestly, the only real serious candidate for the job should they decide that Pittman is overcooked.

Getting Malzahn back in the Power Five feels right, but that man belongs coaching an SEC program."

Easier or harder: type of loss

What’s a harder type of loss to swallow in a big game.

Whether it be the Super Bowl or the CFP, don’t care.

Last second heartbreak (missed FG to win, other team kicks game winner, etc) or absolutely blowout loss (TCU v UGA).

I used to think a bad blowout would be the hardest.

Now, after losing the types of games we have this year, I think these heartbreak “what if” losses give me more grief.

Week 12 Games...

Tommy Guns struggling down the stretch...

MAC Final is set...Miami (Oh) vs Toledo

Da Bulls are on TV tonight on the road battling Jeff "Tractor" Traylor (UTSA)...hoping for a good beat-down for that one...

For some conferences, a chance to play for the conference title is on the line in a bunch of games:
1) The AAC - SMU@Memphis

2) Big 12 is still a five team race but...Texas@Iowa State is an eliminator game

3) Mountain West - Air Force@UNLV...yes UNLV could be playing for the MW title. This also means a 2-loss team will be playing in their title game so the loser, Fresno State, Boise State, and San Jose State are still alive (I think). Assuming they all win there are several eliminator games next week.

4) PAC-12 - Washington@Oregon State is a big game for Oregon State...must win. Then Oregon State would have to win @Oregon to play in the title game, but only is Arizona also loses one of their last two games...much drama still to come.

5) Sun Belt - James Madison plays App State this week and Coastal next week. If they win them both they would go undefeated in the regular season and not play in the title game (or a bowl) game because of lame, stupid rules the NCAA has set up, and for what reason? Why do you bring teams in and then not make them full-fledged members on day 1???? Also this would mean a 3-loss team from the East division would be playing for the title, and App State, Coastal, Old Dominion, and Georgia Southern still are alive going into this weekend.

6) The NCAA is "jobbing" Jacksonville State as well....next week was to be an eliminator game for Jacksonville State@New Mexico State but the outcome no longer matters. It's Liberty vs New Mexico State no matter what happens. Great job NCAA!

UCF Fast & Slow – Texas Tech - The Day The Boomer Died

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated right now. Probably shouldn’t write this blog this quick but I just want all the negative energy out of my body. I am frustrated because the first few drives of the game our offense looked like it was in perfect balance. Incredible play calling, we move the ball easily, control clock, get off the field on defense and then the 2nd qtr comes and we are a completely different team. We left SO MANY points on the field, left 3 at the end of the half, missed a gimme 30 yard fg, Prater’d and extra point, that is 7 points squandered in a 1 score game. It was one calamity after another and culminated with a 12 men on the field penalty when we absolutely cannot give them yards. We just simply refused to win that game, worked to find ways to lose. It was there for the taking. TT did nothing special outside of that handing the ball up the gut to that bowling pin of a back. We should have won this game…

UCF Fast: If the game ended after the 1st qtr the whole team would get fasts but it doesnt and they all worked out of it...
  • Martinez: Not just the pick but he came up and had some solid stops, the early one which I believe forced the 4th down or was on 4th down where he came up and hit that RB hard was what we have been missing this season from the secondary and then the nice pick and a broken up pass. Solid game.

  • Baker: He was targeted 10 times and only caught 4 balls, some of that is on JRP of course but I don’t love that stat. He didn’t appear to drop any unless I missed it. He made some solid highpoint catches in traffic and took the long one to the house where the TT defense just shit their pants.
UCF Slow:
  • Boomer: I thought I would never lead off a slow with Boomer. Only thing I can think of is that the fake fg we ran to him gassed his legs. That fake fg was one of the funnest things I have watched in a long time. It was completely unexpected and the toss over the holders head was ridiculously high and Boomer was running like the devil was behind him, didn’t even look like he was touching the ground, his left arm didn’t even know what to do with itself, it just froze. The adrenaline dump for Boomer on that play was huge and then later in the game he short changes some kick offs, doinks a 30 yarder and misses an extra point to tie the game. WTF!!!! This is Boomer, dude is automatic with his kicks and your girl. I still have faith in Boomer, just really out of character.

  • Refs: You know me, I NEVER blame the refs for losses but there were more then a few calls this game that had me throwing children. The most ridiculous of them all was the Hudson no catch on the sideline. JRP made a great play, Kobe made a great catch, both line judges called it a catch and marked the ball. Amazingly the ref from the middle of the field who had the worse angle overrules it to a no catch. Have no fear they are going to replay to get it right… nope… they somehow keep the call on the field. HOW!!! I watched the replay 10 times, both feet are in (he only needs one), he doesn’t drop the ball, what the ****? That play totally changes that 2nd half drive, instead we eat too much time and get no points. I still don’t get that one.

  • Special Teams: Every facet sucked it up tonight, already talked about Boomer’s two misses, we also couldn’t cover the kick offs for shit AGAIN and when we needed McCarthy on that last punt to flip the field he hits for only 40 yards.

  • End of 2nd Quarter Game Management: To me it is inexcusable to not get at least 3 points on that drive based on where we were on the field and how much time was left. We had full control of the clock. I felt like we wasted the time out when we converted the first down and took the time out with 30 seconds left, had we had two time outs then I am fine with it but I don’t like burning the last time out there but even with us doing that we had the ball inside the 10 yard line with enough time to take 1, maybe 2 shots to the end zone and then take the fg if we don’t get the TD. You can NOT run the ball or complete a pass short of the endzone in that situation. That is football 101. You tell JRP you either have it and you throw it or you throw it away, you don’t take a sack, got to protect the points.

  • Play Calling Later in Game: The worst series for me was toward the end of the 3rd quarter where we were driving and in position for a field goal and we call three straight pass plays, two down field, both incomplete and then a short pass to Holler for 6 yards and have to settle for the 32 fg we end up missing. Then we get a big stop and force a punt and we come right back on 1st down and throw down the field again for that bad pick where JRP arm got hit but he was throwing into triple coverage. If you look back that int was the 7th straight pass play UCF ran. Our advantage is running the ball, whether that is JRP or Harvey to set up the pass. We are not a pass first offense, the play calling during this stretch was the worse IMO and we went down 21-14 because of it. What is so maddening about this play calling is that the play calling in the beginning of the game was outstanding. Also what is with Johnny only getting 3 touches, avg 12 yards a touch. I thought we were going to stop making that mistake.

  • Run Defense: Maddening is my word of the week, it was maddening to watch our run defense when everyone in the building knew they were running the ball and we couldn’t stop it. Pretty much been true all season but it seemed like our defense line was bouncing off that RB. I know he was good but fack, Celiscar, Barber, Hunter, they got like 75-100 lbs on this guy.

  • 12 Men on the Field: Brutal penalty at that point in the game. Cannot give them 1st and 5 when they avg 8 yards a rush. Makes it worst that TT stupidly attempted a pass on that play that was incomplete, could have had a much better chance of getting the ball back and that penalty basically sealed the game. I knew it was over right then and there.
This game is the definition of a game we didn’t get beat by our opponent we beat ourselves. We had the athletes, the momentum, the big early lead, we found a way to lose a game we had no business losing. We made the game harder then it had to be. It was like we were refusing to win and to miss that XP at the end followed up by the 12 men on the field penalty, it was almost poetic to how the game script went. It was like watching the Bills Broncos gam from Monday night (you guys know i am a Bills fan). Bills just refused to win the damn game, found a way to lose. Well we better not pull that shit next week. We HAVE to beat UH. We have all the pressure on us now because we booted this one. Do not blow the bowl streak at home against Houston. We cannot do it. Have to win that game. I will be there, Thanksgiving style tailgate, Go Knights!!!!

Gus Malzahn 2024

It would be a great thing for UCF if anyone takes him off it’s hand. However, that is highly unlikely…not happening.

Let’s take a look at 2024 for UCF: Just about the entire OL, will be gone, the two starting WRs will be gone, the top two RBs will be gone and the starting QB also gone. Maybe the TE Holler can come back for another year,

On defense DEs Celiscar and Morris-Brash are history and the only two serviceable LBs Jason Johnson and Gates III also gone.

Malzahn has developed nobody and UCF and will hit the portal again…good luck.

Imagine someone telling you in 2009 that in 14 years we would be coming off 4 wins in 3 seasons, be in a significantly lower conference than UCF, getting waxed by UTSA and hoping to be lucky enough to beat charlotte. Stay the course boys the future is bright under our milquetoast leadership!
