PSA - Women’s Sports at UCF

I know it is football season, but we have two women in two sports who are first ballot hall of famers playing right now. McKenna Melville is unreal in volleyball and Kristen Scott is a beast on the soccer pitch. If you get a chance to see them play - do it. They are worth the time and effort. Jada Cody will take the women’s spotlight in the spring with Rayniah Jones. I’m a girl dad so these things matter to me. Really proud of the women’s side of our athletics. They’re doing big things!

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming on JRP, ecu, Cindy and football stadium issues. Maybe a little B12 talk too. Thanks.

Progress and concerns as we hit the halfway point

So how are we positioned at the halfway point and after a 5-1 start?

Well, the Offense is starting to gel and should only get better. With 2 new weapons, Hudson and Harvey, contributing, we have a bevy of outstanding athletes. There is a concern at the possible injury to Baker but if the skill positions stay healthy, we'll score a lot of points every week with the right preparation and play calling. So, it's up to Gus and Chip to use all 3 dynamic WR's, our quality RB's and TE's. And JRP has to continue to improve at throwing to the right receiver. He's getting better but needs to be more consistent. The OLine has held their own when they're prepared but D adjustments obviously confuse them. So as they see more defenses, I think they'll be better prepared to react. Bottom line, if the O stays healthy and focused and spreads the ball around, they'll deliver on the promise they made to us at the start of the season that they will score a lot of points every week.

The D has been consistent but still needs to start off games with more energy. Once they settle down and make adjustments, the difference between H1 and H2 is like night and day. Personnel wise the LB's have been a bright spot (especially the 2 D2 transfers) and the DE's are playing lights out. The DL has been good, but depth is now a concern with the injury to Hester and possible injury to Hunter. All while Montalvo has been playing with a broken hand. We need some good news on the health of this room. The DB's have given up a lot of passing yards but they've been solid in the red zone. Overall, the D's goal should be to dominate for the entire 60 minutes (including Q1).

And the ST's have improved dramatically with the changes to K and P. I'm hoping the entire team can improve as much as this unit has. So, at the halfway point and even after the bad Louisville loss, we have the potential to run the table and a chance at a NY6 Bowl game. Grade B+

***DC Travis Williams reviews Temple, impressed by ECU offense ⚔🏈

At the midway point of the season, UCF's defense ranks No. 8 nationally in scoring defense (14.33 ppg) and has maintained a No. 1 ranking in red zone defense (.524).

Defensive coordinator Travis Williams reviews last week's big win against Temple and knows they'll be tested by an East Carolina team led by QB Holton Ahlers and RB Keaton Mitchell.

Recap:

Asked what he liked most about the defense vs. Temple, T-Will said it was their performance in the second half. Really, after the first two drives of the game. They made adjustments and took coaching. Temple did some things they weren't expecting.

The reserves saw meaningful reps in the second half, which was a positive. Walk-ons too. It's always good to get that opportunity.

LB Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste is playing really well this season. T-Will says his leadership has been the key. He takes pride in that and also in his preparation. He's a graduate, so he has more time to do a lot of things on his own. "He's playing at a high level right now." Very proud of him. He's always flashing on film.

They got an early start on ECU, started the prep on Saturday. They know it will be a hostile environment. Said ECU coach Mike Houston does a great job with them.

Asked about getting more sacks, they're getting pressure. The No. 1 objective is to win the game. They don't really have a goal to get a certain amount of sacks. Their goals are getting off the field on third down, stopping the run, pass efficiency.

How would he evaluate the defense at the halfway point of the season? He's not a "half of a season" type coach. Ask him after the season. Teams fall off all the time. He likes to see the whole body of work.

On LB Jason Johnson, he's been a "spark." Said both he and JJB are playing at a high level. They want to be a good LB group. He's always 10 minutes early to everything. He works like a pro. Very smart player.

On fifth-year starting QB for ECU, Holton Ahlers, he's "seen it all." A lefty. Seen every type of coverage. He can run, big guy, tough, strong arm, understands their offense. "He'll be a challenge. I think he's a really good football player."

ECU RB Keaton Mitchell has major speed. He outruns angles. It's trying to bottle him up, but that's going to be tough. He has elite speed and can catch the ball out of the back field. He can hit it for 80 yards in the blink of an eye.

On playing their first true road game, it's all about the preparation. He saw the ECU-Memphis game and knows the crowd will be hyped. He sees a well-coached team.

LB Kam Moore made his debut vs. Temple. He's proud of him. Said he's really smart. Can play the mike and money positions. It's time for him to get more reps. He almost had a pick-six. He works hard. Has great high school coaches who coached him up well.

Another former Seminole player, Demari Henderson, also played a lot. He was No. 4 in defensive production points for the game. He has a bright future as well.

The reserves didn't have a drop-off vs. Temple. The future is bright with the young guys. He was excited to see them out there.

This will be his first time going to ECU. He knows it'll be a good atmosphere and a fun experience.

Drops?

Did we have a single drop last game?

In the dungeons’ infinite wisdom: what do you think flipped the switch for our passing game?

Bad pass defense?

scheme changes?

greater consistency from the QB

more comfort level from transfer receivers?

(Brandon delete this if I’m gonna jinx our team by asking this. Is it like a no hitter? You can’t acknowledge it?)

The football gods are looking favorably upon us this season as we are set to leave the state of Florida only three times this year. This looks to be our last pass in the American Athletic Conference and while there have been some memorable trips in the past, things have gotten a bit stale. Looking forward to trips to Morgantown, Provo, Waco and the like. I think we're in for a treat to visit away games with fans who are passionate about football and not simply reside in city-owned rehabs or cavernous NFL stadiums.

So let's take a look...

Throw out FAU, as that game day experience back in 2019 was atrocious. Yes, I know they'll probably have it figured out this time but the scars run deep. Would probably tailgate or hit a Dungeon meetup and catch at a bar. Not giving FAU my paper.

south florida is a must. Last time we'll play in RayJay for the foreseeable future and I would really love a statement blowout win with Big 12 flags and chants, hopefully capping an undefeated season. Always a fun time. 20 year old dali still remembers the 64-12 beat down, baking in the 300 level, demoralized and down-trodden. That evening I indulged in a bovine slump buster to quell my woes.

That leaves three true road trip destinations.

1. East Carolina Saturday Oct. 22, 2022

dowdy14950.jpg

Greenville, NC was one the coolest college towns I've been to. Really feels like an SEC-lite experience and the town really pulls for the Pirates. Went back in 2012 and it was awesome. Direct flights can be a pain (we drove) and they have slowly dwindled down in fervor as of late. If you have not been, GO. Their stadium is legit and when at capacity is as good as any autumn cathedral in the country. I've appreciated our history with ECU. For a time they were the best football in the Carolinas.

2. Memphis Saturday Oct. 29, 2022

liberty.jpg

Oh Memphis. This is the only road game destination I have not been to. For those that have gone, is Memphis worth the trip? I'm glad we're leaving these jokers in the dust but you can't deny the wild history and epic games we've had with the Tigers. Could be a quick pop in if it makes sense. For true road dogs, sell me on Beale Street and the possibility of being an extra on First 48.

3. Tulane Saturday Nov. 12, 2022

062316_yulman_234_JHill_800.jpg

I think the move for myself is NOLA. Went back in that magical year that was 2015. Last time we play Tulane for a long time and a road trip to the Big Easy is a huge bonus. For those that went in 2019 what are some recommendations besides the obvious "beignet done that" staples. I have a feeling this will be our biggest away game contingency of fans. After this year it's for Sugar Bowl trips only bish!

Let me know what you're thinking. Gotta dangle that carrot to work hard this year to play in the fall.

And as always remember this nugget of wisdom from our First Lady of UCF Football.

***Gus Malzahn Press Conference - ECU Week ⚔️🏴‍☠️🏈

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn wraps up the 70-13 win against Temple and looks ahead to this Saturday's game at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C.

Opening statement:

"Going on the road against a good East Carolina team. They had a big overtime win against Memphis on Saturday night. It will be our second road game. First conference road game. It's going to be a really good environment. We're looking forward to playing them."

Looking back to last Thursday, you couldn't have scripted a better offensive performance. What were the keys for that explosion?

"I think it's more of getting in a rhythm. We've done a better job of executing. We protected our quarterback. I thought that was real important. He's starting to settle down. The game is starting to slow down. Starting to get some timing with our receivers which is real critical. Our offensive line is starting to jell. I've said it all along. It takes an offensive line time. We've got two new tackles. Our starting tackle from last year moved to guard. I think that group has stayed healthy. You can see they've gotten better each week. I think it's a combination of all that."

You put up 70 points. How do you avoid a let down the following week?

"I really feel strong that we've got veteran leaders on our group. You only get 12 of these games guaranteed. Feel real strongly that our guys will be ready to play. They understand that was one week we played really good. We have a lot of respect for our opponent that we're playing this week. We played them last year and it went down to almost the last play. They've got a lot of their guys back. We've got a lot of our guys back. I don't expect any let down."

On playing a true road game:

"This is only the second road game we've had. We're going to have to be prepared for the crowd noise and everything that goes with that. I think we had a good road test earlier in the year. This is a conference road test, so it's completely different from that standpoint. We'll prepare for the crowd noise and everything that goes with that. We'll need to continue to play good football."

What is John Rhys Plumlee doing better in terms of reading the field and reading defenses?

"I think more than anything his progressions. Things are slowing down. He's starting to get the feel of playing quarterback. We thought that all along. I said earlier in the year the reality is he hadn't played quarterback for a number of years. You can see each game is starting to slow down for him. You can tell that with his progressions and his demeanor."

How key was it for Thomas Castellanos and really be able to run the offense? On top of that, that was his fourth game. The redshirt rule says you can play a maximum of four. Will you try to preserve the redshirt the rest of the way?

"We'll see how the season unfolds. We'll do our best to preserve redshirts when it is available. We'll see how the season goes. I think everybody can see what he can do. He's a guy that's a special talent. I was glad he was able to throw the ball too. He can really throw it. He's got a really good demeanor. It was really good for him to get that experience too."

ECU has a very balanced offense and has a running back (Keaton Mitchell) that just came off a 150-yard, three touchdown game, and a quarterback (Holton Ahlers) with over 2,000 yards passing already. What have you seen on film?

"You just said it. Their quarterback is a veteran guy. He's probably one of the most veteran guys in the country. He's played a lot of football. Their running back was first team All-Conference last year. We know how talented he is. They've got two receivers that are doing really good statistically. Big guys they're getting the ball to. This is a really good offense. We're going to have to play really good on defense for sure."

More on ECU QB Holton Ahlers:

"You do your best to keep him off balance. He's seen a lot of football, a lot of defenses. The moment is not too big for him. You can really tell that. We'll have to do a good job of mixing things up. Doing a good job of putting some pressure on him too. That's hard to do. He really can extend plays. He's a good runner within his own right. That's a challenge our defense has."

ECU is coming off a multi-overtime win. In your coaching experience, what it's like facing a team coming off an emotional win?

"They have momentum. That was a huge win, the way it unfolded. They won it at the end. Teams have momentum late in the year. The second half of the year. I think that's important. We know we're going to get their best. They're a confident team and they're playing at home."

Going back to Thomas Castellanos, is he the backup quarterback or is it Mikey Keene?

"Mikey is our No. 2 guy. We also want to do the same thing with Mikey. He'll be ready if called upon. We're trying our best with both those guys to preserve their (redshirts by playing them in only four games). Both of them do understand for us to win we really only have three scholarship quarterbacks that are eligible this year. We'll do whatever we can to win games within that. Try to protect their four games also. We'll see how that unfolds moving forward."

How has Timmy McClain been doing on the scout team?

"He's doing really good. Him and (Demarckus) Bowman are two dynamic guys that are down there giving our defense a good look each week. That's very important to our defense."

Take us through Tylan Grable's run and how close he came to scoring.

"That was Coach Hand's play. He's been wanting us to call that all year. It was close. We thought they'd come off the edge really hard and they bailed two guys out, so it was a little bit different look than we thought. We thought it could be a walk in (touchdown). Give them credit. They played it different. Our guys did a solid job executing. What I was proud of is he didn't stick the ball out. A lot of guys would stick the ball trying to score and the ball goes out of the end zone and they get the ball at the 20. He didn't do that. Coach Hand coached him really good on that. He's an athlete. It looked like he had the ball before."

On multiple players on offense seeing reps vs. Temple:

"I think that's very important. Not just the depth at running back but our quarterback being a runner opens things up too. Offensively, it's taking what the defense gives you. Our guys were able to do that. I think that helped us."

How important is it to keep up the momentum going into this game?

"Very important. We knew this would be a big game when you looked at the schedule. Being the first road game in conference. That's always very important. The fact we had a really close game against these guys last year. They're a talented team. We have a lot of respect for them."

Javon Baker and Lee Hunter both appeared to get a little banged up last game. What's their status?

"Javon, I think he could have continued to play. We kept him warmed up just in case. We were leading. We feel good about his chances coming back. Day to day. Lee is in that same boat. Day to day. We'll see as it gets closer to game time, both those guys' status."

After Thursday's game, you talked about the play of the younger guys. Can you expand on that after looking at the film?

"We put our twos in at the 10-minute mark of the third quarter. Let those guys play a lot. You worry about it getting sloppy. But our guys didn't. They hung in there and played hard. Developing that depth is very important, whether it's offense, defense or even special teams. Real happy with the way those guys responded."

Looking at the film, John Rhys is talking about doing the little things. His confidence, footwork, accuracy, ball placement. Even last game, he used his eyes very well to move off defenders to make bigger passing lanes. Is that something that comes with repetition?

"I think it's all of the above. His best play was probably the one that he got a little pressure in the pocket. He hit a check down right before halftime. He hit Bowser on the check down that went for 47. I think that's really big. He's starting to play the quarterback position efficiently. That's encouraging."

Talking about mistakes, penalties and turnovers, those are being cleaned up.

"We did a really good job not turning the ball over. Protecting the football. Penalties, we're getting better. We're still not overall where we want to be statistically within the country. Every week you can tell our guys about four games ago took it to heart. The way they've practiced and played good, clean disciplined football, that's a huge sign of a good team. We've got to continue that."

You've got six games down, six games to go. How would you evaluate everything at the midway point? I know there's one game you'd like to have back, but are you satisfied with how the guys are playing?

"I think you think take what it is to getting here. The good thing is we're improving. I think that's the No. 1 thing. There's probably not a whole lot of teams around the country that are improving this time of year. The challenge here at the halfway mark is to continue to do that. We've got a really challenging part of our schedule coming up. Our guys are taking this thing one game at a time, looking at East Carolina. We're working hard to get better each week. That will be the name of the game."

When you talk about few teams being able to improve. Why do you think teams don't improve?

"I don't know. We've been able to so far. We'll see. End of the year, we'll look back and see if we continue. It's hard to do. From a player standpoint, coach standpoint. Leadership I think is really big in that. The reason there's not very many is it's hard to do. That's our challenge. We'll see if we can continue."

How do you embrace the confidence around the team so it doesn't fall into a trap?

"I think it's our leaders. We've got a lot of veteran guys that have played a lot of football. I really don't expect a let-up as far as that goes. I think our guys understand that. We have enough leadership that I doubt that will let that happen."

Have you ever been to Greenville, North Carolina?

"I have. I think it was for recruiting."

What kind of atmosphere are you expecting? That's got a good reputation for one of the best atmospheres in the league.

"That's what we've heard. That's what we're expecting, especially after a big win. We expect to get their best. We'll do crowd noise and everything that goes with that this week too."

Are you a big barbecue guy? Eastern North Carolina puts a little vinegar in their barbecue. What's your favorite barbecue?

"I didn't know they were known for their barbecue. I'm not a big barbecue guy. I'll eat some brisket, but I'm not a big barbecue guy."

Hotel recommendation for Cincy game week?

Not surprisingly all of the hotels near campus are sold out. Our family is thinking of pulling the trigger on a last second trip to the game on Saturday and Disney on Sunday. Fly in Friday and out on Sunday. Looking for somewhere between campus and the parks, downtown area maybe? Budget isn’t much of a concern since it’s a short trip just not more than like $500 a night.

Freshmen on the depth chart

2022 class is shaping up to be a great one. Not including transfers, freshmen getting/soon to be getting a lot of PT:
Boomer, Townsend, Henderson twins, Martinez, Moore, and McCarthy. Great to see young studs contribute as it should help them stick around. 2023 class could see even more contributors next year, if we keep it together.

OT: Conversations with a Miami Fan

Every year I ask one of my friend's that is a Miami grad to give me a temperature check on how things are going and his feelings on their program. I do one pre-season, mid-season, and end of the year.

As expected the pre-season report is generally very glowing; filled with predictions of division titles and big wins. Mid season is usually filled with what if's and missed opportunities. End of the year is almost always "Fire the coach".

I present to you.....his mid season report followed by his views on UCF and where we/AAC rank in accordance to P5 fans.....I like to egg him on. So I dove deep into his psyche today.
