Insider’s Thread: Edgewater SDE Josh Alexander-Felton talks UCF recruitment

ORLANDO – Edgewater High School strongside defensive end Josh Alexander-Felton is making a name for himself on the recruiting trail. Alexander picked up his first offer from Pitt with UCF getting into the mix. Alexander’s Eagles squad is off to a 2-0 start with their defender racking up 16 stops, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and a sack.

After helping take down Don Bosco Prep (34-10), the 2024 prospect spoke about his relationship with the Knights.

“UCF is a really good school, and it is close to home,” Alexander said. “They keep in contact. I was supposed to the game Thursday, but I couldn't go. They keep close contact with me.”

The Knights may have a little insider’s help keeping him local with his family wanting him to play for UCF.

Game 2: Louisville, Sims and Predictions.

9/5/2022 Louisville Edition:

Let's recap SC State.

Final score was 56-10. Based on where the scores fell in the sims, that was pretty close. Nailed the offense pretty much, but defense was WAY better than expected and the new transfers seemed to gel instantly. Adjustments were made accordingly under-the-hood. Good to see.

The Math prediction was 58-28, and my "Heart" Prediction was 45-17. My friend's son, Julian predicted 56-7 having done no study. SO...I have decided to utilize his Nostradamus skills going forward as part of the write-up (with his father's permission of course).

Onto some Louisville stuff.

----
Louisville Fun-Facts:

Louisville has had a radio station running since 1968. It's also part of Louisville's "Public Radio Partnership", featuring no less than three NPR affiliates. That's impressive.

Like FSU, Louisville has an on campus movie theater that seats 228. The theater can run both 35 mm and DVD projection.

Louisville has no actors, actresses, or pop culture celebrity alumni (at least according to Wikipedia). For a public university of its size, that surprising. Although, James Patterson, co-founder of multiple restaurant chains, including Long John Silvers, Rally's Hamburgers, and Chi-Chi's is a notable alumnus.

----

Players to watch for Louisville:

Malik Cunningham - QB, 6'1", 190. Dual-threat, shifty...can throw. Reminiscent of Teddy Bridgewater

Tiyon Evans - RB, 5' 11", 210. Transfer from Tennessee. Has experience, good weight and speed ratio.

Dee Wiggins - WR, 6'3", 195. Transfer from Miami. Has good speed, can catch in traffic.

***Onto the REAL Beef*** (Or NOTHING, because you are FASTING.)

Weather forecast at 7:30PM Eastern kickoff:
Sunset: 7:37pm
Temp: 81F
Chance of rain: 40%
Slightly less chance than last week. Doesn't matter. It's Florida and football, plan for the unplanned. You've been warned for months anyway, perhaps years...

TV: ESPN

I ran 12 CPU simulations for a good math spread. Half with Rain, half without to simulate approximate rain chance. Louisville is a tough team to read now after watching their game at Syracuse. I almost feel that there is something systemic occuring by how they folded so easily to Syracuse. Syracuse also looks good as well. This will be an interesting prediction.

Average of 12 simulation results:

UCF 44
Louisville 29

Sim Avg Spread:
UCF -15 (Vegas: UCF -6.5 1:22PM 9/5/22)

"Heart" Prediction:

UCF 48
Louisville 24

"heart" spread:

CENTRAL FLORIDA: -24 (Vegas be damned)

My friend's son Julian's prediction:

UCF 42
Louisville 17

Julian's line of doom: UCF -25 (He's not old enough for Vegas, sorry)

***UCF DC Travis Williams recaps opener, previews Louisville ⚔🏈

UCF defensive coordinator Travis Williams was proud of his team for a stout first-game effort against South Carolina State.

The Knights limited the Bulldogs to under 100 yards of total offense and their only two scores came when they had short fields.

"I do think our guys were up for the challenge," Williams said. "Our challenge was us playing our brand of ball. Even when they were backed up, when they were down on the three-yard line in our territory, forcing a field goal. It's our job to put the fire out. We're the first responders. It doesn't matter the circumstances that got us there. It's our job to stop those guys from scoring. One time we forced a field goal. Another time they hit us on the fade ball. The ball was in the air forever and we've got to make a play on the ball, the secondary. For the most part, I thought the guys played with great effort."

What needs to be worked on heading into game two?

"We did a good job stopping the run," Williams said. "There were times we have to be better in our gaps. Gap control. Better leverage on different routes, things like that. That stood out. It starts up front. We have to stop the run and everything else will take care of itself. That was our first game. A lot of new linebackers. Some new defensive linemen. Just being able to have our gaps under control is something we have to work on this week."

UCF rotated 13 defensive linemen throughout the course of the game. Several players saw their first significant action in a UCF uniform, including K.D. McDaniel (Kentucky transfer), Matthew Alexander (redshirt freshman), Malachi Lawrence (redshirt freshman), Jamaal Johnson (freshman) and Keahnist Thompson (freshman).

"The plan was to rotate the guys," Williams said. "They're good enough. We don't care if a guy is a freshman or a senior. If you're good enough, you're old enough so we will play young guys. Especially for the guys up front, you want to keep them fresh. A tired defensive line is not a good deal. We try to keep the guys fresh. We try to rotate as much as we can. Again, it starts up front. If we can keep those guys fresh, the fresher they are, the better they are."

Asked if there was any moment or performance that brought a smile to his face, Williams said he was proud of the players seeing their first significant game action. Or in the case of Jarvis Ware, returning from injury. The former Missouri cornerback missed all of 2021 with a knee injury.

"It's the preparation to get to a point like that," Williams said. "You're pointing out Jarvis Ware, who is coming off injury. He hasn't played in a long time and it's his first time playing (at UCF). Just to see him out there playing. Seeing the freshmen out there. Matthew Alexander. Seeing Nikai (Martinez). Seeing Malachi Lawrence, who had the shoulder injury last year. Seeing the new freshmen out there. It's so hard to get to that point and to see those guys actually go on the field. That's the part I just pointed out to the defense. For me as a coach, just knowing how much those guys put into it to get to that point, it was good to see them go out and play."

Martinez, a true freshman, recording two tackles including a sack. Williams said he has the versatility to play every position in the secondary, though they want to focus on nickel and corner for now.

"He's a guy that's smart enough to do it all," Williams said. "For us as coaches, because he's smart enough and good enough, we don't want to overload his plate as well. We want him to get good at one position. He played the majority of the night at the nickel spot."

Safety Divaad Wilson pulled down the third interception of his UCF career.

"The ball is in the air, seeing the ball and having good body control to get the ball," Williams said. "That was good for him. It was good for him to get that interception. It was good to see the reaction on the sideline by his teammates. It was a good night for him."

UCF rotated four linebackers, each seeing nearly equal reps: Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste, Jason Johnson, Walter Yates III and Branden Jennings. Jean-Baptiste is the experienced senior, while the other three are transfers.

"Looking at them, what I see is speed," Williams said. "We have some speed at the position and some depth. We were rotating. Jeremiah is the ringleader of that whole deal. He's been really good with his leadership. Football is important to him. UCF is important to him. He's a graduate. I love the kid. It's important to him. Having a guy like that in the room makes a world of difference."

Yates made a big impression leading the defense with seven total tackles.. The former Savannah State linebacker transferred to UCF this summer with two years eligibility remaining.

"He can run," Williams said of Yates. "He has a nose for the football. Very smart football player. It was good to see him out there. We'll rotate the linebackers. We feel good about the rotation there. That's another thing, keeping those guys fresh. It was really good to see him. I looked at the stats this morning, I think he had seven tackles. I saw him flash on film. His speed and just his knack for the football."

Up front at the defensive end spot, K.D. McDaniel made his presence felt with two pressures including one tackle for loss. He has UCF's highest-graded defensive player according to PFF, earning an elite grade of 91.4.

"K.D. McDaniel did some good stuff," Williams said. "You saw him playing in the back field. He gives us that pass rush ability. He's really been working at stopping the run, the point of attack, watching him do that. That was good to see."

Defensive end Dallaz Corbitt saw his first action under this staff after not playing in 2021.

"It was good to see Dallaz Corbitt out there," Williams said. "It was his first time really playing. He's another guy that gives us juice off the edge. He has the club on his hand with some different effort deals that I showed the defense. Again for me, because I know the preparation and the hard work for all those guys, those are a couple names of the guys that work hard to get to that moment. Now they've got to keep going."

Tre'Mon Morris-Brash had three tackles from the end spot.

"He's slippery," Williams said. "He's a guy that you've got to see where he's at. He made some plays in the back field. He's going to do some stuff as a coach, oh, the C-Gap! But he makes the play. Sometimes you can mess a player up if you make him a robot. We don't want to make him a robot. We want him to make plays. He did some good things yesterday and some things he needs to work on, but I was proud of him."

The challenge ramps up next week on Friday night when Louisville and star quarterback Malik Cunningham make their return trip to the Bounce House. A year ago, the Cardinals beat UCF 42-35 in the closing seconds when a Dillon Gabriel pass was intercepted for a pick-six.

Cunningham is a true dual threat. Last season he passed for 2,941 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,031 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"If we could sneak 12 (players) out there, that could help us," Williams said. "The guy is dynamic. He's a Heisman Trophy candidate. He's going to get his. He's dynamic with his feet and his arm. He's a really good football player. We have our hands full. We have to prepare and have a good game plan for him."

During the time of this interview on Friday, Williams hadn't fully dived into Louisville prep but knows there's more to worry about than just Cunningham.

"They've got some receivers that transferred in and a really good offensive line," Williams said. "I think their left guard (Caleb Chandler) is really highly rated. PFF has him rated really high. I know he's a good football player. Just from my general knowledge of the team, that's what I can tell you but I haven't really broken them down yet."

Louisville will have a short week to prepare for UCF as they open on the road on Syracuse on Saturday night at 8 p.m.

"(Playing on Thursday) gives us a little bit more time to get prepared for them," Williams said. "We need every second we can to get prepared. It's a team we respect. Preparation is the key. Like I told the defense, the most important game yesterday was South Carolina State. The most important game going forward is Louisville because that's the next game. If we prepare, we'll be ready."

***

Defensive tackle Lee Hunter (Auburn transfer) did not dress for the opener.

"He had a little deal nagging him, but he'll be back next week," Williams said.

Freshman Ja'Cari Henderson, who was listed on the initial depth chart as a backup cornerback, also did not dress.

"Ja'Cari is good. We just wanted to hold him. He had something nagging him a little bit, but he'll be ready to roll."

OT: ThiccBoi Rising 👀

Utah QB Cameron Rising goes by the nickname "ThiccBoi" according to the Utah game notes. The Utes visit Florida on Saturday night.

Black & Gold Glasses Off: Gasparilla Bowl Win…

Listen, I know they had an interim HC and they finished 6-7 after losing to us and we played against Emory Jones and it was a neutral site but…..

You don’t have a 9-month swing in Spring and Fall practice and beat a top 10 team with scrubs. Obviously AR15 is a man, the Swamp is daunting and belief is a hell of a drug but that Gasparilla bowl win means something.

Anyone got depth charts of starters for both games?

***UCF OC Chip Lindsey reviews SC State, John Rhys Plumlee debut ⚔🏈

It was quite the debut for quarterback John Rhys Plumlee and the UCF offense against South Carolina State.

Plumlee, a transfer from Ole Miss, passed for 308 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 100 yards and one more score. In all, the Knights racked up 605 yards of total offense in the 56-10 victory.

A day after the game, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey talked about the performance.

Recap from the interview:

In a first game, you always learn about your team and how guys respond. The guys had early energy and played fast. He was disappointed though in tempo and says they didn't line up as fast as they should.

At times, the offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage and others time they made mistakes. They got some different looks. He said Coach Hand and those guys did adjust.

The skill positions dropped too many passes, three or four drops. But there were some big-time catches.

Gus has emphasized they need to play better without the ball - blocking the right guys and finishing.

The running backs ran hard and protected the ball well.

JRP "did a lot of good things." Mentioned the fumble, but said five guys showed great effort in tracking the guy down. "That's something as a coach you're really proud of." He did some good things, but there are some things he needs to clean up. Passing wise, did a "great job" with some touch throws on wheel routes for touchdowns. With the exception of 2-3 plays, JRP got the ball out pretty quickly. Also made plays with his feet.

Overall, some things to clean up and learn from.

Lindsey said JRP needed the live reps. In practice, they usually get 4-5 plays in a row, then another group comes in. After 1.5 years of not playing QB, he did a great job of handling the information, checked protections and just got more comfortable in the offense.

Lindsey mentions how JRP does play physical.

Lindsey mentioned Gus brought the Wildcat formation to the SEC.

On WR Javon Baker, Lindsey mentioned how he made an unbelievable catch during one of his first practices. He's got great ball skills, plays the ball in the air as good as anybody, is physical. For a first time with a lot of game action, he can be special. He just has to play better without the ball.

Asked if anything pleased him or brought a smile to his face, he liked how TE Zach Marsh-Wojan's first career catch was also a touchdown. He was excited for him. He was also excited for JRP playing QB again and doing well. He liked seeing the new WRs, including Xavier Townsend.

Mentioned the old football cliche of making the most improvement from game one to game two.

Isaiah Bowser and Johnny Richardson are the only primary RBs that saw action. He was asked about R.J. Harvey and Mark-Antony Richards not playing. He said it was flow of the game. Isaiah is a "proven guy" who needs to get carries and Johnny can also carry a workload.

Asked about OL improving, Lindsey thought they played hard. Live reps are just different. Mentioned the veteran guys and newcomers, just working together and becoming cohesive.

On the tempo, Lindsey said their pace needs to be quicker. Get to the line quicker.

On TE Kemore Gamble, "what a great catch on the wheel route." A scramble play by JRP got him the ball and fell down, could have maybe scored. He can run for a man his size. The sky is the limit for him.

On Louisville, Lindsey said he didn't know much yet. He knows Malik Cunningham, who is from Alabama. This interview was Friday at 12 noon.

More on WR Xavier Townsend, Lindsey said it was evident early on when the freshmen got here that was "more mature" and might be ready to play early. His approach is great, very even keel with a calm demeanor. Came from a good high school program and had confidence.

On his first game in the Bounce House, Lindsey complimented the atmosphere and the student section.

I asked about the limited reps QB Thomas Castellanos got when he finally made his debut. He had five plays with "two minus plays." Had a good run on a draw. "It's fun watching young players get in the game. It's like watching your own kids, they're so excited. Tommy is going to be a really good player."
