INTERVIEW: Leger Douzable on ESPN+ Coverage of SC State at UCF on Thursday

The Sons of UCF are joined by Leger Douzable, who will be in the booth for ESPN+ this Thursday when the Knights take on South Carolina State. Leger shares his thoughts on the QB battle, the style of offense Gus can run, how this defense can be better (and who he is watching closely), and the overall state of the UCF program in year 2 under Gus Malzahn.

An interesting idea: Could UCF go independent and make more $$?

I was looking at College Football expansion discussion just now and we could see a vote next Friday for the CFP expansion to be happening as early as 2024, two years before current contract expires

I just had this idea that we could make a lot money by being independent and having our own TV contract. I am just wondering: could we make more money and exposure this way?

I know we are entering Big 12 and new TV negotiation is already on the way. We could also make more than 40M per year. And everything is on its way

but I am just asking a what if? I know everything is like common sense now for us to be in Big 12

but hey, I am a fan just like you who loves to speculate

We could make our own schedule also (I know it is hard to schedule P5 teams already). But we could ditch usf and make UF or Miami our main rivalry

we could also sign a digital TV contract with ESPN+ like OU did last summer and provide our fans extensive coverage

we could go to the open market and sign with CBS or ESPN for our football coverage and let our hoop teams stay in Big 12

I do know many of you may not like this. But I am just asking a what if? Enjoy the season!

The NCAA asked for Congress to get involved - they might not like what they get

“For them to get the cooperation from us, they’re going to have to change some of their practices,” says Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a sponsor of the bill. “The NCAA feels urgency and needs to get federal cooperation. I’m going to make sure that we also are able to change NCAA practices that undermine the students’ education, well-being and basic first amendment rights.”

"Booker, a former college football player himself at Stanford, intends for the bill of rights to be rolled into federal NIL legislation already in the works in both chambers. He suggests that some Congressional support for NIL may hinge on the support for the bill of rights proposal, which as of now does not include Republican backing. “The way the Senate works…. the NCAA has come asking for significant authorities (with NIL). We are a body that works… they are not going to get something done if it’s not bipartisan.”

• The proposal expands on the ways in which a college player can earn money, expanding well beyond NIL. Athletes would be allowed to enter group licensing deals, such as apparel clothing lines or the NCAA video game, and they could enter revenue-sharing agreements with athletic associations, conferences and their own schools. The NCAA and Power 5, strongly opposed to such freedoms, have restricted athletes from all of the above in its NIL proposed drafts—both of which SI has obtained.

• The legislation also calls for banning all restrictions and penalties attached to athletes’ school choice, from originally signing with a program to transferring among them. This could create what many college coaches and administrators would describe as “free agency.” Under current rules, players are bound to a school by signing a National Letter of Intent, and they must miss a year of eligibility when transferring to another program within FBS. However, that transfer rule is expected in January to be amended to allow players to transfer once without penalty.

• The bill of rights would also create an “oversight panel” to give athletes representation. The commission, led by current and former college athletes, policy experts, academics and administration officials, would “level the playing field by establishing baseline rules that govern college sports,” the statement says.

• The proposal also provides athletes with “lifetime scholarships” to return to campus post-eligibility to complete their education, enforces evidence-based health standards to keep players safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic and increases financial assistance for athletes suffering from long-term injury or virus-related health issues. Under current regulations, Power 5 programs are required to care for athletes’ medical woes at least two years after they leave the university.

• In a final requirement, the bill of rights seeks to hold schools more accountable of their internal finances, requiring each to provide detailed annual public reporting of their revenue and expenses. College athletic departments are notoriously secretive and often lack transparency. Each school does provide a detailed financial document to the NCAA annually that is available through public records requests. The legislation would also demand that schools report on athlete activities, specifically their hours spent on workouts, film study, travel, etc."

***Top recruits expected to attend UCF season opener ⚔🏈

UCF's Thursday night season opener against South Carolina State is expected to draw a big number of "Hometown Heroes."

The group includes five UCF commitments, including Apopka defensive end Kaven Call, Lake Mary cornerback Braeden Marshall, Osceola defensive tackle John Walker, Boone kicker Grant Reddick and Wekiva defensive end Sincere Edwards.

Class of 2023 prospects with UCF offers include Palmetto defensive end Andrew Rumph, Lakeland offensive lineman Genorris Wilson and Lakeland wide receiver Daidren Zipperer.

A decision for Zipperer is coming Sept. 24. He officially visited UCF in June. His top six also includes Pittsburgh, BYU, South Carolina, South Florida and Arkansas State.

Several commitments to other schools are also expected, including Osceola cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson (Florida), Seminole wide receiver Goldie Lawrence (Florida State) and Apopka offensive lineman Tai Ray (Pittsburgh).

Other 2023 prospects include Seminole offensive lineman Josiah Chenault, Cocoa defensive back Jordan Holmes, Oviedo running back Daravis "D.J." Scott, Osceola defensive back Lacory Walker, Lakeland defensive back Kamaurri McKinley and Lakeland defensive back Twan Wilson.

Big names in the Class of 2024 include Edgewater defensive tackle Josh Alexander-Felton, Auburndale defensive tackle Nate Gabriel, Cocoa linebacker Samadrae Hawkins, Rockledge cornerback Jaylen Heyward, Oviedo offensive lineman Tye Hylton, Evans safety Brandon Jacob, Seminole wide receiver Michael Key, Lakeland tight end Omari Mixon, Jones defensive tackle D'Antre Robinson, Lakeland wide receiver Jamar Taylor Jr. and Cocoa defensive end Loren Ward.

The 2025 list includes notables Seminole defensive back Ethan Pritchard, Osceola running back Taevion Swint and South Sumter wide receiver Ja'Kyrian Turner.

In all, more than 100 players are expected.

UCF has been making recruiting waves since Gus Malzahn and his staff arrived more than a year ago. The Big 12-bound Knights are recruiting locally like never before, securing commitments from elite prospects with national profiles.

"Our goal was to make it popular to come here," Malzahn said earlier this month. "In the past, for the big timer guys, it just wasn't popular. Now it's starting to. The dominoes are starting to fall. If we take care of business on the field, everything is set up. It's set up in a great way. Talking about seizing the moment, that's another way. It's bigger than just winning games when you think program wise and everything that goes with it. Things are going great and it's going to get nothing but better. That's the fun and exciting thing for our staff in our program."

$1 Trillion and no debate

Today I heard the U Penn Wharton got a hold of the Biden plan for student loan forgiveness. Turns out it's really over a trillion and it's just going to be tacked onto our debt . I heard a talking head on XM breaking down the plan. What we all heard was everyone with a student loan making less than $125k or $250k for a couple would get the $10k off the top and some making less get $20k off the top. That's where the $300 billion came into the equation.

However, what the plan is really doing is then going to calculate a reduced payment based on discretionary income after housing and electric and food is figured into the budget. Then if you work in any of the dozen or so preferred fields like teaching, government bureaucrats, nursing ,etc you get to qualify for this second part . They will calculate your payment based on discretionary income and if you pay on time for a decade the remainder of your loan will be forgiven.

They used a nurse for an example with $70k in student debt making $80k a year . He said using average household expenses for housing power and food the nurse's payment would be around $61 a month. The plan calculates 5% of the discretionary income would be the payment amount. The guy then says over a 10 year period the nurse would pay around $7,000 and change . Then the magic happens their remaining loan amount is gone , just wiped clean . Hence the real costs is now over $1 trillion dollars and the total paid back by the nurse is just over $7k on a $70k loan .

Now many here might think just do it . However, my beef with this thing is centered around the fact the administration used Weasley language in the COVID Bill to justify doing this through executive order . There was no debate ,no discussion in either the House or Senate . It's just wave the wand and all is good.

I am moderately open to addressing this issue but how this thing happened is just wrong . It's a trillion dollars just saddled onto our debt with no way to pay for it and no discussion on the issues . I am Joe Biden and I made it so . I wouldn't be thrilled if Trump or any Republican did it either. All bills dealing with taxation and spending must originate in the House according to the Constitution. They used open ended language and justified this under COVID relief .

This is a huge give away for people making upwards of $240,000 and it just happened without a word in Congress . I find that wrong and unacceptable. I don't care how you vote , you should also find the way this was done not right either. They were deceitful In the amount, how the plan will work, who really gets to benefit and how it would be paid for. Not a single congressman or senator got to vote for it or against it. It's only a trillion on top of $32 trillion , just add it to my tab .
