Breaking: C-USA schools joining AAC for 2022 season... ⚽

In men's soccer.

Press release:

IRVING, Texas – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced the addition of affiliate member institutions to the conference in the sports of men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving effective July 1, 2022.

In men’s soccer, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will begin competition in The American in the Fall 2022 season.

FAU and FIU will also compete as affiliate members in women’s swimming and diving, along with the University of North Texas and Rice University, beginning with the 2022-23 season.

UAB, Charlotte, FAU, North Texas and Rice will compete as affiliate members until those schools join The American as full members (along with UTSA) on a date to be determined. FIU will remain as an affiliate member in men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving while holding primary membership in Conference USA.

“We are pleased to be able to welcome our affiliate members for the 2022-23 season,” said Aresco. “The addition of these outstanding teams will immediately strengthen our conference in men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving. This will allow us to have one of the most competitive men’s soccer conferences in the nation, while providing a more competitive and memorable championship experience in women’s swimming and diving. I would like to thank Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod for her collaboration on this process that has led to a positive outcome for these student-athletes.”

The four men’s soccer affiliate members have combined for 35 NCAA tournament appearances, including two national runner-up finishes and a third-place finish. Charlotte and FIU played in the 2021 NCAA tournament. They join a conference that has seen three of its existing members ranked in the top 10 of the national polls in the last two seasons.

The American sponsors women’s swimming and diving as a championship-only sport, meaning that the conference does not administer a regular-season schedule. With the addition of the affiliate members, nine teams will compete for The American title at the 2023 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

The American will have affiliate members in four sports beginning with the 2022-23 academic year. In addition to men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving, the conference has affiliate members in women’s lacrosse (Florida, Old Dominion, Vanderbilt) and women’s rowing (Old Dominion, Sacramento State).

***UCF offers Lakeland DT during spring game visit***

Guerlens Milfort's visit to UCF's recent spring game is a day he'll never forget.

The Lakeland defensive tackle has double-digit offers, but the Knights were the first to do so during a face-to-face meeting.

"I'd been talking to UCF a little bit before the offer," Milfort said. "I've been talking to (defensive tackles) Coach (Kenny) Martin and the recruiting coordinator for our area. They were telling me to come to the spring game, that I'd enjoy it.

"The traffic was bad, so I got to the spring game around halftime. Afterward, they took me on a tour around campus. Then we went to the defensive coordinator's (Travis Williams) office and that's when it happened. He said he really liked me and how I play, how I get off the ball. They liked how I do other activities too, like track and weightlifting. I was surprised. I wasn't expecting it."

Milfort is already feeling a close connection with Coach Martin.

"We have a good relationship," Milfort said. "He took me on the tour around campus. I got to see their facilities and what they're going to be building soon."

It wasn't his first visit though.

"Gabe Dindy visited UCF a couple times last year and I tagged along with him, but this was the first time it was all about me."

Milfort has a couple teammates headed to UCF this fall, Keahnist Thompson and Miguel Maldonado. He's also familiar with defensive end Josh Celiscar, who is from nearby Winter Haven.

He said there's a lot to like about UCF.

"They're getting better," Milfort. "They're joining a new conference, the Big 12, and doing big things. I'm looking forward to that."

He has two official visits locked in for the summer: Kansas from June 17-19 and Pittsburgh the week after, June 24-26.

UCF is another visit possibility as is Appalachian State. He's high on all those schools along with Coastal Carolina.

With a flurry of transfer commitments in recent days, and another one expected soon (Ithiel Horton), he's a look at how the roster is shaping up. Schools can put a maximum of 13 players on scholarship. Counting Horton, UCF has 10 players and still would have three slots remaining.

Big time recruit, hoping to hear a Boom on Monday.

He's the nephew of UCF WR Mark Whittemore ('91-'94, multiple records in his time, played with Darin Hinshaw)
His cousin is also a UCF recruiting target in ATH Creed Whittemore.
The Whittemore clan has siblings active on FBS rosters too, Luke Whittemore (Troy) and Trent Whittemore (Florida).
It would be really cool to bring all the Whittemore's and Singleton's to UCF as one big UCFamily.

Gasparilla Bowl shirt in the wild extended swamp of Jacksonville

Was pretty excited to run into someone else wearing the gasparilla bowl shirt at lunch today in Jacksonville. “Go Knights!!” I said. He replied with “I worked at the stadium”. Needless to say I was disappointed but it only gets worse. He followed with “Good game for UCF though, I look forward to the day that UCF and USF are good again”. There were so many things wrong with that statement that I didn’t know where to start. He kept taking but nothing else registered after that and I could hear was the teacher from Charlie Brown. So disappointed that I didn’t get a “Charge on” or even a “Hell ya”
Back to eating lunch… if I haven’t lost my appetite.

Cincinnati, Houston & UCF Negotiating Settlement to Join Big 12 in 2023

Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are negotiating a settlement in the “$17 million to $20 million range,” which would allow the schools to exit the American Athletic Conference early and officially join the Big 12 on July 1, 2023, sources told Action Network.

First I’ve seen dollar amount confirmed. $17m is what we’ve all seen rumored! I wonder what else is going to leak during the meetings this week.
