After biding his time as a freshman,
Johnny Richardson flashed on to the scene as a sophomore in 2021. The Lake Wales native began the season as a backup to
Isaiah Bowser, but became UCF's No. 1 running back option when Bowser was sidelined.
Richardson would end the season with a team-high 733 rushing yards with an impressive 7.0 yards per carry. He was an all-around contributor, leading the team with 23 "explosive plays" of 20 or more yards combining rushes, receptions and returns.
Now wearing No. 0, Richardson caught up with the media late last week. I first asked about his number switch as he wore No. 25 last season. The No. 0 became available when
Titus Mokiao-Atimalala transferred out and Johnny said he had his eye on it.
What did he learn from last season, his first as a primary contributor?
"I matured a little more," Richardson said. "I calmed down and learned to take everything slowly and process everything. Be patient with things."
How does he like working with running backs coach
Tim Harris Jr.?
"I love Coach Harris," Richardson said. "He's a straightforward guy. He'll be honest with you. He'll tell you what you're doing wrong and what you're doing right too. He's a good man."
I asked what he's learned from working alongside Isaiah Bowser.
"The being patient part," Richardson said. "Like running routes, breaking certain ways, how the linebacker is playing you. Learning how he breaks the linebackers down."
Patience - learning to let the holes develop - is a big area where he's trying to improve this spring.
"I gotta be patient when I'm in the backfield so I can see everything develop instead of just scatting away," Richardson said. "That's the main thing I've got to focus on, being patient with everything."
That's also what he wants to prove in this Tuesday's scrimmage.
"I want to show I can be patient in the backfield, see the holes and hit it," Richardson said. "Finish hard runs."
What was his favorite moment from last season?
"The South Florida game. I got the draw play, broke up the side. It was a big game changer for me and the team."
I asked about who has impressed early on in practice, maybe a newcomer, and Richardson name dropped freshman
Jordan McDonald who enrolled in January.
"We've got a freshman running back, Jordan," Richardson said. "He's coming along. He's big, fast. He's doing things right. Being patient in the backfield, seeing the holes, hitting it and breaking tackles. Jordan is a guy I'm watching."
What was the highlight of Thursday's practice?
"Flash (
Jaylon Robinson) came across the middle and caught a pass with two people (on him) and finished, kept running," Richardson said.
He continued to talk about the wide receivers.
"They look good," Richardson said. "
(Ryan) O'Keefe is gonna do his thing.
Kobe (Hudson) is a good slant runner."
Did he have a favorite running back growing up?
"Coming through high school, I was in love with
Dalvin Cook," Richardson said. "That's why I was No. 4 in high school. I still love him to this day. I loved his game and how he plays."
