Coaching staff speculations?

At this point I’d be shocked if it was Chinander. I think he’s a great hire.

My guess is he is bringing several coaches on the Boise staff with him.

I am going to send this to FootballScoop for Frost.

Central Florida (FBS - FL): Central Florida University is currently accepting applications for the Defensive Coordinator position. This is a full-time position with no benefits or salary. No previous coaching experience required. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. Azz kissing & driver's license required. Duties will include coordination of all phases of the defense, coaching a defensive position group, being responsible for a recruiting area, game day management and being a designated driver for the Head Coach. Interested applicants can DM Terry on Tic Tok.
Just remember these requirements are more than we asked for in the last few years. Previously we just asked for a empty husk has-been.

You’re such a juvenile! This is a ridiculous waste of space. When are you going to hit the portal and head to FSU with your god, loser Gus?

there are fans that don’t want him. but seems like he has been good w Boise but they go slower on offense than UCF Frost 1.0

this won’t be a popular hire but he is used to coaching where the offensive staff goes fast 🤦🏽‍♂️

Seems very odd when these types of hires occur. I’d assume a better than average G5 coordinator would be a better option? I don’t get the recycling of poor performance.

I don't know much about him or whether he is a good hire or bad but here are some stats on Alex Grinch:
In his first season at USC in 2022, the Trojans led the nation in turnover margin (1.57). The Trojans as they ranked No. 3 in the nation with 19 passes intercepted by 11 different players. USC ranked No. 5 in the nation in turnovers gained with 29. USC played in the Cotton Bowl to conclude the 2022 season.

Grinch, spent the previous 3 seasons (2019-21) at Oklahoma as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. The Sooners ranked 24th nationally in rushing defense in 2021 (123.8) and advanced to the Alamo Bowl. In 2020 while winning the Big 12 title and playing in the Cotton Bowl, OU was third nationally in interceptions (16), fourth in opponent third-down conversion percentage (27.9), seventh in sacks (3.4) and ninth in both pass efficiency defense (112.9) and rushing defense (105.1) while allowing just 21.7 points per game. Oklahoma was 17th in the nation in opponent third-down conversion percentage (32.2) in 2019 when he was a Broyles Award semifinalist and OU won the Big 12 crown and played in a College Football Playoff semifinal in the Peach Bowl.

Grinch spent 2018 as Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach as the Buckeyes won the Big Ten and Rose Bowl.

He was Washington State's defensive coordinator and secondary coach for 3 seasons (2015-17). The 2017 Cougars were 16th nationally in total defense (323.3) and ninth in both passing defense (170.9) and turnovers gained (28) as he was a Broyles Award semifinalist. WSU played in the 2015 Sun Bowl and 2016 and 2017 Holiday Bowls.

Grinch was the safeties coach at Missouri for 3 seasons (2012-14). The Tigers captured the SEC East Division titles in 2013 and 2014 and won the Cotton Bowl in 2013 and Citrus Bowl in 2014.

I mean, there must be something good about him if he was DC or Co-DC at Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Wisconsin? He's had no problem getting hired at one big-name program after another. Is it possible the results at Oklahoma and USC were more on Lincoln Riley than him?

I think at Oklahoma he gave up a lot of points but they were winning. At SC it was pretty bad

Wisconsin Head Coach Luke Fickell had this to say about Grinch, "I want guys that have had a lot of tough situations. Define what you want to say as failing, I don't know, you weren't as good as you want to be as a player in my mind, but it doesn't matter if you were released or whatever. Guys that have gone through that and can humble themselves and recognize that, I think they're a hell of a lot better in the long run. . . . ."We had some mutual connections and knew that our ideas and things we do align in a lot of different ways. Once I got to know him and met him a little bit, to just see and feel the humility he had and all the things he went through, never complained, never made an excuse, never pointed a finger. He's a very smart football coach that's a hell of a lot better now than he was then because of those experiences"

Grinch working Pro bono to rebuild his image at a stepping program is bound to be a feel good story for 2025.

This clown is not too far from reality here. Unfortunately, UCF has an AD who is a guy that can fundraise but also a guy that is a failure at hiring football head coaches.

First, Malzone…who came to UCF to win “now”and get an SEC job again. Malzone never built a roster for the long term…did not develop the high school players. First, thing old head did was get guys that were highly rated in high school but proven busts in college…all for hype and UCF fans are it up for a couple of years.

Now Tik Tok Mohajir hired a guy that should have never been hired. Scott Frost was hired for hype…to get some enthusiasm and donations. Outside of Orlando Scott Frost is a HUGE negative draw…both for recruits and coaches.

UCF would have been better off with a young, hungry coach. Someone without the personal and professional drag of Scott Frost.

The good news is that Frost came in very cheap and the same for all his hires. If he doesn’t work out, UCF can easily fire him and his staff in two years and start over. By that time UCF will have more money and (hopefully) a different AD.

Again is not all gloom and doom. Frost gets two years and see how the program is trending…not even about wins and loses.

If you have believe in a head coach then four years is an appropriate time span but in this case I say two years is enough.

There’s also the possibility that Frost works out and revives the program…it could very well happen.

I have to agree with the resident buffoon.

Frost is The Perfect Storm.

At least y'all can fire him after two failed seasons.

Frost is doing a Gus Part II version of staffing by hiring all of his buds from his disastrous Nebraska job. Sorry if I’m not being optimistic, but he IS NOT putting together an impressive staff.
I don’t disagree with you about not being very impressed by the staff, but I don’t think he had any previous connection to Grinch.

I agree with u who knows until shots are fired. We have to wait n see. Its not like our DCs over the last few years were extraordinary

Seems like with Grinch we are continuing the theme of redemption. He WAS a young up and coming DC (nominated 2x for assistant coach of the year), then had a run of his defense not working well at OK and USC. I guess we are gonna figure out if that's a Lincoln Riley issue or a Grinch issue.

His defense worked well enough at OU for Riley to bring him to USC with unlimited resources. There's so much involved in defensive stats it's a waste of time to compare. Chinander's defense routinely gave up huge points because of Frost's fast offense and has given up a lot less at Boise. Even this year there were games where our defense couldn't get a stop but didn't give up crazy number of points because of how slow we went on offense. I'm definitely not excited about the hire, but willing to wait and see how it goes.

That’s why Gus went so slow. He didn’t care if he lost. As long as it wasn’t a blowout and 45 points weren’t scored on us. That’s not a good way to coach. Use the 3 deep at every position and constantly rotate. Being tired is not an excuse. Poor recruiting and player development on defense is the reason. Use the 100 players you have.

Ironically Malzahn had significantly more blowouts losses than Frost and Heupel combined. Except for BYU game, Heupel's team losses were single possession games.
