BREAKING NEWS: JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INDICTS VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT NICOLAS MADURO OVER MASSIVE DRUG TRAFFICKING OPERATION, OFFERS $15M BOUNTY FOR HIS ARREST
by Kevin Ryan

The Trump administration has indicted Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and members of his inner circle for effectively converting Venezuela’s state into a criminal enterprise at the service of drug traffickers and terrorist groups, in part to fuel a crumbling economy marred by failed policies and rampant government corruption.

The Justice Department filed drug trafficking charges against Maduro, alleging he “helped manage and ultimately lead” a criminal organization known as the Cartel of the Suns, according to an indictment unsealed this morning. Under his leadership, the cartel sought to “enrich its members and enhance their power… by using cocaine as a weapon against America and importing as much cocaine as possible into the United States.”

The criminal charges said Maduro personally negotiated multi-ton shipments of cocaine, and coordinated relations with Honduras and other countries to facilitate the illegal drug trade.

The U.S. is also announced at least $15 million in rewards for information leading to the arrest or prosecution of Maduro, and a separate bounty on Diosado Cabello, head of the ruling socialist party.

Colombian officials told CNN last year that drug smuggling in Venezuela has recently involved the Colombian leftist guerrilla group ELN, which is considered a terrorist organization by the US, working with the Maduro military.

The U.S. also designated Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism. The designation puts Venezuela in the company of only four other countries -- North Korea, Iran, Sudan and Syria -- that have "repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism," and will enable the US government to implement further sanctions on the regime.

The international community has accused the Maduro regime of widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary arrest and the detention of Venezuelan citizens.
