UCF MBB RPI (and power rankings)

Just imagine if we had beaten St. Johns and Missouri like we should have.
Eh. I think the loss of Aubrey Dawkins and BJ plus Tacko's limited role caused a panic. This is basically coach realizing this year will be like last and he's going to have to reel in the supporting cast and coach the best he can with them.

the infernal futile basketball Cornhuskers had a nice win the other night. All of a sudden its a good win.
Fun fact - had no idea the Nebraska Cornhuskers had so much state influence that Creighton had to join the Big East.
I had no idea Omaha was on the East Coast.**

This is pretty amazing. 2nd RPI in the AAC. Temple is 1st and 6th best in the nation.

DePaul, Marquette, Xavier, and Butler aren't on the East Coast either....

That Missouri game was one of the ugliest games I have seen by 2 teams. Hopefully Missouri can keep winning to keep that SOS up. The rest of our ooc games are weak and will hurt the SOS. We absolutely have to win those games.

We got conference coming up. With a bunch of teams with good records it will balance itself out hence why Wichita State joined.

Update after playing a low RPI team. We drop 21 spots. Good news! If most of our teams head into conference play with a winning record then any team should experience an increase with a win. Right now Cinci is Top 25 but their RPI is 98th.

10 teams within striking distance of being considered for the dance now.
If we can get at least all but one to finish their non-conference run with a winning record, RPI's during conference play have potential to be impressive.

Last night's ugly win over Southeast Louisiana is still a win. Good comeback in final 5-6 mins to pull that victory off.

Outside shooting is still putrid but hopefully these guys will improve by conference time as they will need to if they want to finish in Top 3-4 in conf and or have a chance to win the conference tournament at the Amway Center.

So we are entering conference play with a very respectable 9-3 record, and the 63rd RPI in the nation which is good for 4th best in the AAC. That is with our best player, BJ being out.

Real Time RPI does a game by game predictor. For Posterity here is what they are predicting by Month:
Dec: 1-1
Jan: 5-2
Feb: 3-4
March: 2-0
That good enough for a 11-7 in conference play - the exact same as last year where we finished 4th in the league.

Basically, they expect us to lose all of road games to good teams and win all of our home games.

The conference road begins tomorrow knight at SMU.

UCF is now 63rd in RPI, but whats more impressive is that there's currently 8 teams in the Top 100 from the American.
I can't ever recall UCF being in a conference where that many teams sniffed the Top 100. After going back, saw eight teams from CUSA at the end of 2010 and 2011. I'm sure it wasn't that high throughout...although they were 8th best that year. Just thinking with conference, the addition of Wichita State should expect big results for the American and that should help UCF if we can capitalize on beating the higher RPI/power teams.

We got a nice win over Bama and definitely need to root for them to stay good. They can't collapse like Miss State.
Of course, need a winning record in conference, but the reward in having high ranked RPI teams in conference is if you win you get rewarded. With the familiarity of our conference foes, its possible (to win) as long as we aren't outclassed which we aren't. Get one or two of those high teams won't hurt them but will help us and we beat everyone below us if possible.

Interesting enough, the Big 12 has the #1 conference RPI. They have 8 teams with RPIs in the Top 100. Oh how averages can be skewed.

There bottom teams have RPIs of 124 & 135

While the AAC bottom teams RPIs are 317 (usf) & 344 (EZU)

...and thats fine. RPI isn't everything but its good to know that we're in the argument.

Fun part of the schedule is Wich State and SMU are scheduled at home towards the end of the season. I'd like to see those two loosen up, probably because they have a spot in the dance by then, and lose to us. Add those wins to the resume along with Alabama and maybe William and Mary or Nebraska, plus an impressive showing in the tournament and we can finally make the NCAA.

free throw shooting has gotten worse from being a problem already. I think there were 17 turnovers last knight. Oh Johnny, what have we? :-(
Yeah the FT Shooting was bad. Turnovers trying to force the ball to Tacko hurt too. Even after he gets the ball, if he isn't 3 feet from basket he can't do anything with it.

Next game is against Temple.
RPI Rank: 32 SOS Rank: 1 Record: 7-6 (0-2)

Beating them would be great as long as they start winning again immediately after.
That RPI ranking is on a real thin tightrope.

UCF is in pretty good position 15 games in. They have no bad losses and have a quality win @Alabama. 21-10 with a win in the conference tourney probably gets us on the bubble. Having Cincy, Witchita State, SMU, and Temple all on the schedule twice will practically guarantee an RPI above 50 if we finish with 20 wins.

Creighton is a Catholic school so it wasn't exactly surprising that the Catholic conference included them.
