***Gus Malzahn on staff changes: "We went 6-7 and that's unacceptable" ⚔️🏈

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn was blunt during a Friday press conference to cover recent staff changes that includes the addition of Tim Harris Jr. as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, Ted Roof as defensive coordinator and new strength coach Anthony Kincy.

"Bottom line, we went 6-7 and that's unacceptable," Malzahn said. "So I evaluated everything. We've made some changes that I really feel good about moving forward."

Here's everything he had to say:

Opening statement:

"First of all, we've got three of our players (here today) that had a chance to go the NFL, that chose to come back. They'll be up here in just a minute and you'll be able to ask them any questions and if anybody wants to individually get with them, they can.

"RJ Harvey, our running back, obviously had a big-time year. Really one of the better running backs, really, in all of college football. Kobe Hudson had a big-time year. He's one of the better receivers in all of college football, he chose to come back. And Ricky Barber, I feel like he's one of the better defensive linemen in college football. I'm really excited for those three guys.

"Just big picture, kind of like I told you before, that after the season I was in an evaluation mode. Bottom line, we went 6-7 and that's unacceptable.

"So I evaluated everything. We've made some changes that I really feel good about moving forward. Obviously, our defensive coordinator, Ted Roof, is a guy that was at Oklahoma the last two years. We were at Auburn together when we won a National Championship. I'm very excited to bring Ted and his experience and expertise in.

"Addison Williams is going to be in charge of our secondary and he is our associate head coach. Those two are working extremely well together, so I feel really good about our defense.

"Yesterday, you saw where I hired Tim Harris as our new offensive coordinator. Tim is a guy that knows me well. He knows our offense well. He is one of the best teachers and coaches that I've been around. So really excited to bring him back with everything he has to offer.

"Darin (Hinshaw) is going to be our co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. He did an unbelievable job with John Rhys (Plumlee) last year and developed him. I think everybody saw that.

"I'm excited to have those two guys with me. As far as play calling, it will be a collaborative deal with me and Tim and then Darin will also have some influence with that. I'm really excited about our offense moving forward with that group.

"Anthony Kincy is our new strength coach. I'm really excited about Anthony. Anthony's a former player of mine. He was at Auburn with me when we went to the National Championship game. He ended up being our No. 2 guy before we left. He was with Tennessee the last couple years and he's just off to a great start. Our players are really responding with the culture and everything that goes with it.

"There's a lot of changes, but I think it's really good changes. I really feel good about where we're at. The bottom line is we're improving in every area. So that's what we've been doing and I'm really excited about that."

When you got the job here a few years ago you said you would always in essence be offensive coordinator and call plays. I know you made the tough decision a year ago to hand off those duties. You said a lot of coaches in college football were doing the same thing. Why did you decide you needed to go back to being in control of the offense?

"Bottom line, my job is to do whatever's best for our team to win and be successful. And about halfway through the year, I felt like I need to be a lot more involved. Just for the identity of our team, the identity of our offense, the discipline, everything that goes with that. So that's my job and that's what I'm doing and we will operate differently next year."

You talked about play calling being a collaborative effort with you, Tim and Darin. Do you anticipate doing the majority of the play calling?

"I mean obviously I'm the head coach and we're going to operate in a matter where Tim will be a big help and he'll be a big part. That's the way I've done it all the way back with Rhett Lashlee and everybody as far as that goes. So we'll operate that way. And I will say this, Darin will still have influence. Look, we threw the ball down the field really well compared to what we did the year before. You look at what he did with John Rhys Plumlee and his expertise as a quarterback. So I feel really good about moving forward. I'll be the point person. I'll put it that way."

Aside from 6-7 and being below .500, what from last season was unacceptable?

"Well 6-7, I think that's where it starts. You've got to understand, I've been real fortunate. I've never lost in my life and had a losing season. You finally do that and you evaluate yourself as a head coach. I know how to win. And obviously last year was totally unacceptable and that's where it starts.

"I mean this is a championship type program and to have a losing record is unacceptable. So you evaluate yourself first as a head coach, which I did and made the proper adjustments where that won't happen again and we'll be better next year. I will promise you that."

There were a couple games last year that slipped out of your hand. How are preparing to prevent that from happening?

"All these changes that I made. That's how we're going to correct some of the things that we had last year."

You said it was halfway through last year that was about the time you needed to get more involved. What were you seeing from a trend perspective that made you want to be more hands on?

"Really big picture is we were in a losing streak, but we weren't playing very clean football in my opinion. Whether it's penalties, discipline, everything that goes with it, and just trying to get your whole team to get on the same page. So that was the No. 1 thing. Like I said, my job is to do whatever it takes to help our team be successful. And at that point I felt real strong that's what I needed to do and that's what I did."

You obviously have experience working with Tim Harris in your first two years here. Why was it a priority for you to go recruit to come back to UCF essentially?

"Well, he's valuable in a lot of different areas. First of all, like I said earlier, he's one of the better football coaches and teachers that I've coached with. And then somebody that's familiar with me and familiar with how we operate offensively. We're on the same page with that. He's a great recruiter, I think everybody knows that. But probably his biggest gift is just his ability to develop relationships with players. And he's really, really special in that area."

Coach, obviously you've dealt with a large amount of injuries since your time here. What does a new strength coach bring to that?

"I think more than anything, he played for me. He has been a strength coach for me. So I think more than anything it's just that continuity, everything from top to bottom. He's with our players more than anybody else. So just the culture we're developing, everything that goes through that. Talking to our players, you can ask them. I mean, just how they feel after two or three weeks. He's really good. He's one of the rising stars, I think, in really all of college football in that area and I know exactly what we're getting."

Tim's experience has been coaching running backs at the collegiate level to this point. What makes him the right fit to coach wide receivers?

"So I'll take you back. Tim was a head coach in high school. My experience is some of the best teachers and coaches I've ever been around, even as I've been in college, were high school coaches. I think he won a National Championship as a head coach, so he's used to coaching everything. It doesn't matter, you could put him with the quarterbacks, you could put him with the receivers, you could put him with the tight ends. He's a great coach. So really, that's what stood out to me and I will promise you our receivers will take that next step."

You mentioned you won a National Championship with Ted Roof. You worked with Tim Harris before. What is about these people that you want them on your coaching staff and how does that help you?

"I think anytime you don't meet expectations and you go back with people you're familiar with, that you've won together with, you know exactly what you're getting. You know how they're thinking. They know how you're thinking and everything that goes with that.

"And then guys that we've won championships with. So you're exactly right. That's how we're putting the piece of the puzzle together. That was a big part of my evaluation on what we needed to do to take that next step and have a good season next year."

Look Back: UCF at Arizona State - Sept 7, 2002

The Nov 9, 2024 road game at ASU will be UCF's 2nd game at ASU (4th game in the great PHX area...counting 2 Fiesta Bowls in Glendale) but the first trip occurred early in the 2002 season on a Sept 7th night.

In what was then a somewhat typical road game experience....UCF jumped out to a 13-3 lead early in the 2nd Q...only then to see ASU score 43 straight pts to win 46-13.

Schneider had a horrible game (7-24 for 150 yds, 1 TD and 2 INTs) while Brian Miller went 1-4 for 7 yds and 1 INT.

UCF also lost 2 of their 3 fumbles in the game for a 5 turnover offensive night.

Oh...one reason for the fumbles are poor offense was because this game played in the desert...RAINED!

That's right...it RAINED during this game and there were some gusty winds for a short time which hinder both offenses. (ASU fumbled 6 times and lost 3).

Only standout was WR Doug Gabriel...who had 5 catches for 116 yds as he had an 80 yd TD.

ASU D scored 16 pts....had 2 INT returns for TDs and also had a safety.

ASU Offense didn't do much but they didn't need to do much to win by 33 pts.

ASU went just 9-17 for 120 yds passing but with 3 TDs....and ASU ran whopping 53 times for 141 yds.

Hoping for a similar start but a better ending in the desert this go around.

PREVIEW: UCF Softball is excited for the 2024 season

UCF Head Softball Coach Cindy Ball-Malone met with the media and shared her excitement for the 2024 seasons. Their first in the Big 12, the Knights know they will face some tough competition through the year, but Coach Bear thinks her team will be up for the challenge. Selected to finish 5th in the Big 12 in the pre-season coaches poll, the Knights have a good mix of veterans, transfers, and youth to hopefully exceed those expectations.

Today's Shareholder Zoom-Small updates

-Sounds like football campus ground breaking for next year, but most major work not starting until 2025. Next year will be area around practice fields and E6. Goal is to have new tower completed by 2026. New tower will be expanded to allow for an additional 1,400 or so seats.
-They're considering re-configuring the courtside club seats after this season into a more hybrid model. TMO said they recognize if people aren't in those seats during the game it looks terrible on tv.
-NIL-He wouldn't say how much the Kingdom's budget is, but to continue to donate over there if you can. He said in general blue bloods are getting about $10m per year to spend, and the average Big 12 team is somewhere around the $6m range.
-Very early stages of talking through some baseball facility enhancements through private donors.

Think that was all of the important stuff, if I forgot anything or got anything wrong please feel free to chime in if you were on the zoom.

UCF Block Party tomorrow 5 pm - 7 pm before game vs #18 Baylor

Reminder to those coming to the game...East Plaza Drive will be block due to the party in the streets.

Perfect weather: Wed High of 71 degrees...Street Party Forecast: 70 degrees at 5 pm...67 degrees at 6 pm.

Lots of cheap tickets (starting at $5) available so crowd unfortunately might be a little lighter than the last 3 games where UCF averaged over 9,100 in attendance per game.

Time for FB results, what does that mean to you?

In the coaching thread a lot of people are saying it’s now time for Gus to produce, or everything is in place for a big year, etc. What does that mean to you?

I think we have made some good moves and I certainly think we should be better next year. But I do feel we are still lacking Line depth.

In the other thread I said 8-4 regular season would show improvement, especially if one of the Ws is in the swamp. But I get the feeling some people on here won’t be satisfied with anything less than a B12 title. So what is required to get some of you on the Gus Bus?

REPORT: UCF Men's Basketball looking to bounce back vs Baylor

The UCF Knights Men's basketball team returns to Orlando after a tough road loss at Cincinnati. Knights Coach Johnny Dawkins knows that his team potentially let one slip away, but they must refocus with ranked Baylor coming to town. Guards Darius Johnson and Jaylin Sellers understand that the Knights must play with more urgency and protect their home court.

UCF Basketball Press Conference - Baylor & Oklahoma Week 🏀

UCF dropped to 3-4 in Big 12 last Saturday with a 68-57 loss at Cincinnati. It was a tale of two halves: The Knights had a 12-point lead at halftime, but struggled on both ends during the second half. It didn't help that Shemarri Allen and CJ Walker were unavailable due to injury and so was Ibrahima Diallo for a large portion of the game - he generated five fouls in five minutes of play.

UCF returns to Orlando this week with a pair of home games: No. 18 Baylor on Wednesday and No. 23 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Baylor is 14-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12. The Bears started off league play with three wins against Oklahoma State, BYU and Cincinnati. They're on a three-game losing streak with setbacks to Kansas State, Texas and TCU in triple overtime, all with razor-thin margins.

The Bears have five players scoring in double figures, led by Ja'Kobe Walter (14.8 ppg) and RayJ Dennis (13.9 ppg).

Oklahoma is 15-5 overall and 3-4 in the Big 12. The Sooners opened league play with a win against Iowa State, then dropped a pair of games to TCU and Kansas. Wins against West Virginia and Cincinnati followed and now they've lost two straight to Texas and Texas Tech, losing to the Red Raiders by just one point. OU visits Kansas State on Tuesday.

OU is led by Javian McCollum (14.3 ppg) and Otega Oweh (13.9 ppg).

Johnny Dawkins

Dawkins thought some players did step up at Cincinnati in the absence of some players, but the Bearcats scored too many transition points. Also thought rebounding was lacking. Playing defense without fouling. Those are areas of emphasis.

Dawkins says they need to play with more composure on the road. It was no surprise that Cincinnati made a run. When the Bearcats turned it up, UCF didn't respond like they should have.

Regrading the injury status of Shemarri Allen and CJ Walker, Dawkins said both are getting better and still recovering. They're improving.

They have to regroup and respond this week.

On Ibrahima Diallo's foul trouble at Cincinnati, they were tough fouls. He fouled the fastest he's ever seen - five fouls in five minutes. He needs to have a better understanding of his value to the team and not pick up excessive fouls.

Darius Johnson has been up and down. Dawkins said he needs to assert himself. His grandfather just died and that was tough on him. Even as other guys start to emerge, such as Marchelus Avery and Antwann Jones, Darius must stay in his role as one of UCF's leading scorers. "Stay consistent with who you've been."

On Baylor, they're a well-coached team. Talented players. It will be a challenge, just like every game in this conference. It will take a 40-minute game to have success.

Jaylin Sellers had back issues in the Cincinnati game. Dawkins said he was struggling a bit with it during the game, but he's getting treatment. All players are going through something this time of year. He just needs to take care of his body.

Baylor is the leading scoring offense in the Big 12. They need to concentrate on what they do well which is defend, make it a half-court game and lock in.

These upcoming games are important being at home. They must defend their home court.

Dawkins is one win away from his 300th win. It would be great to get the win on Wednesday. UCF and the Orlando community means a lot to him.

Tyler Hendricks is back from his injury. Dawkins thinks he can help the team, he saw a few minutes of play at Cincinnati. He likes his defensive activity and can rebound, and has a good feel offensively. He just needs to get more comfortable.

Obviously the player absences impacted them at Cincinnati, but no excuses. Every team is going through something this time of year. They should have executed better.

CJ Walker is day to day. They think he'll be okay. He's making progress. Hopefully it's short-lived.

On the Big 12, Dawkins always knew it was a great conference with tremendous parity. No nights off. Every game feels like an NCAA Tournament game. Every atmosphere is electric. Every opponent is well coached with talent.

Sometimes shots don't go down, so you have to make sure you play defense. You should always control that aspect of the game.

Darius Johnson

Being up 12 at halftime against Cincinnati, they had momentum but had the wrong approach in the second half. They should have stepped on Cincinnati's throat, but didn't and the game got away from them.

These upcoming games vs. Baylor and Oklahoma are huge. An opportunity to prove themselves.

Darius had an off night offensively vs. Cincinnati. He's been dealing with the death of his grandfather, whom he was very close to. Darius said he really hasn't been himself these past two games.

On Baylor, they shoot the three well. One of the top defensive teams in the country. They like to get out in transition.

Darius said his grandfather was one of his best friends. His grandmother died a month after he was born and his grandfather moved in with his family. He was with Darius for almost 22 years. He lived 104 years and even survived COVID. He's never lost anyone that close to him, so it's been tough. He recognized that he lived a long and great life.

His grandfather (John Henry Chaney) loved baseball. He would always support Darius at his games. His father's favorite team overall was probably the Washington Redskins.

Darius appreciates the support from the fanbase and doesn't want to let them down.

They need to get back in the win column and start stacking wins instead of winning one and then losing one. They need to do what it takes to position themselves for the postseason.

Losing Shemarri Allen was tough. He's also big with helping Darius at the point. Even so, they still should have won the Cincinnati game.

Darius feels their biggest strength has been their defense. They're top 10 defensively. Offensively is where they need to improve.

If they hold a team under 50 points, it's called a defensive masterpiece. They also want to force more than 10 turnovers.

Jaylin Sellers

Sellers says they've struggled to put two halves together, which was obviously evident at Cincinnati.

He's been struggling with a back injury since the Kansas game and it was bothering him at Cincinnati. He's been getting treatment on it.

On Baylor, they shoot the three well and can get out in transition.

These next two games are very important since they're home games.

Regarding the second-half offensive woes at Cincinnati, he thought they were trying to play one-on-one too much and not sharing the ball which stagnated everything.

Gus Malzhan offensive genius? More like FRAUD.

Take away the two possessions that we started inside navys 20 yard line which are like guaranteed points, and we scored SIXTEEN POINTS. SIXTEEN!!! Even JH wins that game. Gus is a fraud. Only putting together an offense that scores SIXTEEN points on there own against an academy school with all of our weapons? Get the fraud out of my University.

Looking for some help or if I'm SOL.

Is it possible to have a drop down menu (data validation) with 2 text options and a editable date? I want to create a template that we can use for dates but some instances those dates will be TBD or NA. I keep getting errors when I try to edit a date. Cell is formatted for dates and the text options work. Any formula I can use? TIA

Ted Roof

Was Ted Roof a good hire? He was fired at Oklahoma for poor defensive performance. The Sooners lost to Kansas and Oklahoma State, and they gave up 520 yards in a 69-45 win over TCU. Roof’s final game was a 38-24 loss to Arizona in the Alamo Bowl when quarterback Noah Fifita passed for 354 yards and two touchdowns. Should Addison Williams been retained as Co-defensive Coordinator and promoted to Asociate Head Coach? I'm not feeling it.

Brock Purdy has 'amazing' visit to UCF

v80gijnamjet9qs99sim

Brock Purdy, the nation's hottest quarterback prospect, just wrapped up his two-day official visit to UCF.

Purdy, who attends Perry High School near Phoenix, Ariz., has exploded on the recruiting scene after a 'Gatorade Player of the Year' senior season in which he passed for 4,405 yards and a state record 57 touchdowns while leading his team to the 6A state championship game.

Boise State and Iowa State were his first two visits this month and he was in Orlando for a Wednesday through Friday trip. UCFSports.com caught up briefly with Purdy on his way to the airport.

"The visit was amazing," Purdy said. "I enjoyed the coaches and the players. The college itself is awesome because everything is so convenient and the weather was sweet."

A pair of UCF offensive stars served as Purdy's player hosts during the visit. On Wednesday night he was shown around by offensive tackle Wyatt Miller and on Thursday it was quarterback McKenzie Milton, who won this year's Archie Griffin Award for his role in leading UCF to a perfect season. Purdy said he enjoyed getting to know Milton. Among the activities was an outing to the cinema to see 'Maze Runner: Death Cure.'

"I've got a pretty good relationship with him," Purdy said of Milton.

UCF has limited quarterback depth with just one other scholarship player (Darriel Mack) currently on the roster. While Milton has a firm grasp of the starting job, Purdy would have a strong opportunity to be his heir apparent or perhaps play even sooner in the event of injury.

Head coach Josh Heupel made it clear that while Milton is the present, Purdy could be the future.

"Coach (Josh) Heupel is outstanding in everything that he does," Purdy said. "He has one of the best offensive minds I've seen. Great Coach and he has great character."

Up next for Purdy is a weekend visit to Alabama. A decision could come as early as next week or perhaps Purdy could opt to take one final visit. Several schools are angling for him to give them a look, including Texas A&M.

Pick to win: Oklahoma

WOMEN

Championship info:
April 18-20, Houston Oaks, Hockley, Texas

Recent champions: Oklahoma State (2023), Texas (2022), Oklahoma State (2021), Texas (2019), Texas (2018), Texas (2017), Oklahoma State (2016), Baylor (2015), Oklahoma (2014)

Team rankings: Texas (8), UCF (13), Houston (27), Oklahoma State (38), Kansas (46), Iowa State (51), Texas Tech (52), Oklahoma (56), Kansas State (58), Baylor (62), TCU (79), BYU (91), Cincinnati (155)

Midseason All-Conference Team: Molly Smith, UCF (14); Lauren Kim, Texas (21); Farah O’Keefe, Texas (23); Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, Oklahoma State (28); Bohyun Park, Texas (48)

What to watch: The addition of four teams has added a couple of contenders in the Big 12 in UCF and Houston. The Knights enjoyed one of their best seasons in program history last year yet fell short of a third NCAA Championship appearance – and first since 2019. Smith and Oregon transfer Brittany Shin have bolstered UCF’s depth, with the freshman Smith (one win, three other top-13s) putting together a stellar first semester. Sandwich Sisutham could have four top-10s if not for a final-round DQ at the Mercedes-Benz, where UCF still managed to win for one of two fall team triumphs. The Cougars haven’t gone anywhere now a couple years removed from head coach Gerrod Chadwell’s departure for Texas A&M. Houston won its fall opener, the Sam Golden, and its star sophomore Moa Svedenskiold had three top-10s in the fall. ... Texas, though, remains the conference favorite. The Longhorns have made match play at national in three of the past four championships, including last year when Texas finished second in stroke play. Much of that squad returned this season, though it’s been two freshmen who have led the way so far – Kim (Stephens Cup winner) and O’Keefe (two top-5s). As a team, Texas was probably one poor final round at Stanford away from being ranked in the top five. … Oklahoma State surprised many by upsetting Texas and Baylor at last year’s Big 12 Championship, and as long as Hinson-Tolchard (two top-10s in fall) is still around, there’s a chance for a repeat. It’s just no finishes better than fifth in the fall is concerning. … Now in her third season, Kansas head coach Lindsay Kuhle is continuing to build a Big 12 contender. After a T-8 regional finish last year, the Jayhawks were runner-up to Pepperdine at New Mexico’s event to open the fall. Throw out a 13th at the Mercedes-Benz is this team could make a run at nationals this spring. … Iowa State got four T-14s from its star player, Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn, but it still couldn’t finish better than ninth in four fall tournaments. Even with most of last year’s roster back, there are some serious depth concerns. … While Iowa State’s fall performance was surprising, nothing could’ve predicted this from Baylor – 12th, 14th and 12th before finally winning the Rainbow Wahine in Hawaii, with the latter being the weakest field the Beard saw in the fall by far.

Pick to win: UCF

OT: Mens bball ticket help

Good evening everyone. First post on the UCF forums. Welcome to the Big 12 everyone! That Kansas win was huge! Am a Texas Tech alum living here in Orlando and excited to finally get to see my team play in person without having to fly to Texas!

I am set to take my 9-year-old to his first college basketball game next month on 2/24 when UCF/Tech play. I'd like to spoil him and sit courtside - I figure those are season ticket holders as no tickets are available on ticketmaster/stubhub etc.

Anyone have any insider knowledge about how to arrange to get such seats assuming they are available? I was watching highlights of the UCF/Kansas game and saw numerous empty courtside seats which gave me the idea.

Thanks in advance for any help!
