Kalia Davis Potentially Expanded Role with the 49ers The Athletic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers were deep into the euphoria stage of Sunday’s blowout in Philadelphia — the time when rookies, understudies and seldom-seen guys are tapped for mop-up duty — when Jalen Hurts attempted to take off from the pocket.

He didn’t get far. A defensive tackle with dreadlocks and an unfamiliar number, 93, pounced on him after a few steps.

It was Kalia Davis with his first NFL sack. Davis quickly popped to his feet, ran a few steps toward the 49ers sideline, leaned back and rubbed his belly in exaggerated circles, which of course is Arik Armstead’s long-established sack celebration.

The sideline erupted. Armstead, out of the game at that point, rubbed his belly back at his position mate. So did Brock Purdy and half a dozen other 49ers. George Kittle, Jauan Jennings and Aaron Banks shouted their approval.

“Everybody on the sideline was so excited,” defensive coordinator Steve Wilks recalled this week. “You saw Deebo (Samuel), you saw Trent (Williams), you saw Juice (Kyle Juszczyk) — everybody — was so excited for him. And that’s just how this team is, you know? Very unselfish players.”

The reaction was due in part to the homage Davis paid to Armstead, who’s the longest-tenured 49er and has the role of protective older brother on the defensive line. Inside team headquarters, Armstead, 30, is known as “Blueprint” because he does everything right and is a model for the other linemen. He left the Eagles game with a foot injury and won’t play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks due to that issue and a knee injury sustained in Philadelphia.

USATSI_22029913-scaled.jpg

Mostly, the sideline elation was an acknowledgment of Davis’ long wait. Before Sunday, he’d been a healthy scratch for every game this season. Only one other player, linebacker Jalen Graham, has been in a similar situation. Graham, however, is just a rookie. Davis spent the 2022 season on the 49ers’ non-football injury list as he recovered from an ACL tear suffered in college the season prior, meaning his wait has been significantly longer. His previous regular-season action had come Oct. 9, 2021, the day he hurt his knee while playing for Central Florida.

“It was just seeing him in the pads,” Jennings said about his reaction to the sack. “Every time I see someone new in the pads on the field, it makes me think about the first time I was out there, man. I even think about his mom, his parents, his friends. That’s what it’s all about. It’s all about the memories. It’s something he’ll never forget. He went out there and got a sack, man. I’d be fired up.”

“I mean, it was his first game,” Samuel said. “It was big. And you could see how happy he was. He was so in the moment, he didn’t even know what celebration to do. So he pulled out the Arik celebration.”

Told what Samuel said, Davis laughed and said that was true.

“The reality is that I didn’t have a sack dance ready,” he said. “But my mind was working quick. So I said, ‘OK, Arik’s hurting a little bit. Let me show him some love.’”

The gesture also was appropriate considering that Davis will be one of three players — Javon Kinlaw and Kevin Givens are the others — filling in for Armstead against the Seahawks.

The biggest role will fall to Kinlaw, who also notched his first sack of 2023 in Philadelphia. In fact, he got two — one in the first quarter and another in the second. He ended the day with five quarterback pressures in what was by far his most prominent performance of the season. He’ll start in place of Armstead against Seattle, an opportunity to show that he’s fully recovered from the knee issues that hampered him over the last two seasons and can help keep the 49ers defense rolling even without one of its key members.

“He’s really been consistent these last couple of weeks,” Wilks said of Kinlaw. “I love the way he’s playing with a lower pad level. Really, as we talk about all the time, (we’re) trying to create a new line of scrimmage, playing on their side of the ball. Everything we do is about penetration, and you can see that with him.”

Davis, meanwhile, ought to give fans a glimpse of the future.

Despite all the attention the team paid to its defensive line this year, the 49ers promise to be a bit threadbare at the position when the new league year begins in March. Kinlaw and Givens will be unrestricted free agents. So will Chase Young and Clelin Ferrell, while Randy Gregory is owed no money beyond this season.

The team has three defensive ends under contract for next season: Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson and Robert Beal Jr., who only recently was placed on the active roster and who hasn’t played a snap this season. The defensive tackles signed for 2024 are Armstead, Javon Hargrave and Davis, signaling that the 49ers expect Davis to have a meatier role next season.

The early signs are good.

“For him to seize (the opportunity) the way he did this past week was gratifying for not only him, but for everybody,” Wilks said. “Good pad level. He’s very strong. I love the way he comes off the ball, uses his hands well, and good lateral movement where he can shed and get down the line of scrimmage and chase things down. He’s going to be getting a lot of reps here coming up soon.”

Best Defense ever fielded by UCF

Since the season is almost over, I was reflecting how close we were to being and 8 win team this year and really was focusing on how explosive our offense would have been if everyone had stayed healthy.

On the flip side, I was trying to remember or at least identify which season our Defense was paramount and reliable. We all know it has to be a GOL team, but which year was it?

***UCF Transfer Portal News - Thursday Recap***

Two more UCF players hit the portal: WR Amari Johnson and LB Isaiah Paul.

Johnson saw his most playing time in 2021. He missed all of 2022 with an injury. He only appeared in two games this season.

Isaiah Paul was a Class of 2018 player so he should be out of eligibility. Looks like he must be getting a medical redshirt.

Here's the portal exit list so far (9):

CB Fred Davis
RB Jordan McDonald
OL Drake Metcalf
WR Jaylon Griffin
WR Tyler Griffin
LB Keenan Cupit
CB Corey Thornton
WR Amari Johnson
LB Isaiah Paul

WR Jaylon Griffin tweeted that he has received offers from Marshall, Vanderbilt, Arkansas State and Texas State.

Princeton LB Ozzie Nicholas announced a UCF offer. San Diego State, Coastal Carolina, Delaware, Temple and Houston have also offered. He has one year of eligibility remaining, but is a spring 2024 graduate from Princeton so he wouldn't enroll until the summer.

According to PFF, his season grade was 90.5 - that's elite. In 10 games, Nicholas had 104 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 6.5 TFLs.

Northeast CC LB Keaton Thomas tells me he is scheduling a midweek visit to UCF next week. He has already visited Cal (last weekend), Memphis, Liberty and Georgia Southern (the latter three during the season). This weekend he goes to Baylor. He is scheduled to visit Mississippi State the following weekend.

Former WVU signee who went to JUCO and would have three years of eligibility remaining.

Some interesting Twitter commentary from UGA transfer DE/LB CJ Madden.

2025 QB commit EJ Colson tweeted to him "teammates again?" (Madden is a Cedar Grove alum) and Madden replied, "why not." LB commit Qua Birdsong then reacted with the "eyes" emoji.

I've messaged CJ to see if he's planning a UCF visit but haven't heard back.

After redshirting in 2022, Madden saw limited snaps in seven games in 2023.

Hopefully I will have some decent visit intel on Friday. A lot of these transfers are keeping their recruitment close to the vest. Some are announcing offers and visits, but many aren't. Early Signing Day doesn't necessarily apply to transfers. There is still a window in early January to visit prior to the semester starting.

***Transfer DE visiting this weekend***

Will post a visit list soon, but here's a newer name confirmed to be here this weekend:

UT-Martin DE Daylan Dotson

He announced a UCF offer earlier this week. The Savannah, Ga., native had 7.0 sacks this season.

Other offers: Troy, Ball State, Coastal Carolina, FAU, Liberty, Tulsa, Western Kentucky, Texas State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, FIU.

ITT: List the reasons why this could be a down year for UCF:

I'll start:

  1. New OC
  2. New DC
  3. No returning starters in the secondary
  4. No returning linebacker starters
  5. No returning wide receiver starters
  6. Brent Key as OC (this may should be #1)
  7. Schedule with our 3 toughest games being away
  8. All new kickers (this may should be #2)
  9. Offensive line - 9 different starting lineups last year
  10. We're due. We haven't had a losing season in 3 years. Everyone knows with GOL as HC, to expect the rollacoster of a ride.
These are just my top 10. Do you agree? What would you add?

***Atlanta OL Dominic Steward high on UCF following visit***

iowgmhsliv84eyelddju

A physical transformation and a big start to his senior year has Dominic Steward getting big-time attention.

That includes UCF, which offered the Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake offensive tackle during his recent unofficial visit for the Baylor game.

"I've been having an amazing season so far," Steward said. "My first three games were great and I got that film out. That really picked up my recruiting. I also gained a lot of weight which coaches wanted to see."

Steward played his junior season at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds. He's still 6-foot-5, but now he weighs in at 270.

"It's definitely been a process," Steward said. "I started in February trying to gain weight. I started eating four meals a day and hitting the gym every day with heavy lifting. I got a lot stronger and it's showing up on the field."

Steward, who committed to Troy in July, recently received offers from Missouri, East Carolina, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Cincinnati and UCF.

"All the coaches like my athleticism," Steward said. "How well I work to the second level. They can see me in outside zone and I'm a great pass rush defender. (UCF) Coach (Herb) Hand said he fell in love with that part of me. He likes my size and how I'm able to move with my footwork."

UCF started showing strong interest about a month ago. He was invited to attend the recent Big 12 home opener against Baylor.

"It was my first visit to UCF," Steward said. "I loved the facilities and the atmosphere. The gameday atmosphere was great. I loved the student section. They were really involved in the game. The whole crowd was. Of course UCF is now moving up to the Big 12 which is great."

Steward was able to have some one-on-one time with Hand following the game.

"I got to speak to him after the Knight Walk and then after the game we really got to talk," Steward said. "He actually offered me in the tunnel after the game. Most of the times when I get an offer it's been a phone call, but Coach Hand wanted to offer me in person. Then we went back to the facility and we were able to talk more and he was able to meet my parents.

"Coach Hand is a great guy. He's funny. I like the way he coaches and the speed his guys played with. That gets me excited because I'm fast for a lineman."

What else stands out about UCF?

"Definitely the location," Steward said. "I've always been a big fan of aeronautics and it's in close proximity to Kennedy Space Center and NASA. That's a big factor for me."

Steward said he was already familiar with UCF's space game, which features custom jerseys that celebrate the school's ties to the space program. This year's space game is Nov. 11 vs. Oklahoma State.

UCF has made a big recruiting push in Georgia and many of those Peach State commits were also at the Baylor game.

"I know a lot of the commits," Steward said. "Christian Peterson is my teammate at Westlake. Me and Waltclaire (Flynn) have been talking for a little bit. EJ Colson is the quarterback at Cedar Grove. We're all close. They actually put me in their group chat."

Steward is also interested to learn more about Missouri. He's visiting Columbia this weekend for their home game against LSU.

"My favorite part about Missouri is Coach (Brandon) Jones, their offensive line coach" Steward said. "He's a great developer. He has a great track record developing guys and getting them into the league. We've been building a close connection. I've been talking to him since July."

He's planning several other game visits, including Appalachian State, ECU and Georgia Tech. Possibly Clemson. He will probably make a return trip to UCF on Oct. 28 for the homecoming game against West Virginia.

Germantown (Tenn.) defensive end DJ Allen first visited UCF for the spring game in April and returned this past weekend for his official visit. He was among the 20-plus recruits on campus for 'Bounce House Weekend.'

"It was great," Allen said. "A family feel. (UCF has) a great education, everything. I feel like I could fit here. Everything was great. I loved it down here."

A major highlight was connecting with senior defensive end Josh Celiscar, who is one of UCF's best players and leaders.

"It was great hanging out with Josh and getting to know more about him," Allen said. "I went over to his house and sat down with him. He told me about the coaching staff. He said (UCF) would be a great fit. I feel like I could fit in too. He's a two-time captain, team voted. Sitting down with him, we clicked."

What else stands out about UCF?

"The education, the team, it's like family," Allen said. "Everything. I feel like I can fit in with this team. I had the family feel as soon as I got here and they picked me up from the airport.

"I just liked everything, from the facility to the dorms, the school, just everything."

His future position coach - Kenny Ingram - serves as his primary recruiter.

"Our relationship is great," Allen said. "We got caught up on everything. Instead of talking on the phone, we got to be face to face. I felt his vibe. I really like his energy... I really like the brotherhood they've got with each other. Coach Ingram, a lot of his guys (that he's coached) still check in with him to this day."

He's a big fan of head coach Gus Malzahn as well.

"I love his energy," Allen said. "Every time he sees me he's fired up. He doesn't like sitting around. Even at Topgolf he was checking in with me while I was golfing, making sure I'm perfect."

Speaking of Topgolf, Allen said he's not a particularly experienced golfer but he dominated the rest of his fellow recruits.

"I had 60 points at Topgolf," he said. "I did real well."

Up next will be official visits to Louisville (June 9) and Purdue (June 23).

UCF will be tough to beat.

"I changed my timeline," Allen said. "I'm changing my commitment date to July 4. On the Fourth of July, there's gonna be a big boom."

***UCF Transfer Portal News - Wednesday Recap***

Have you ever wondered what the NCAA Transfer Portal looks like? A friend shared with me this screenshot of UCF entries. At this point, Corey Thornton wasn't actually in yet. Graduate transfers have a cap emoji.

I'm hearing Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall will arrive at UCF on Saturday. I'm guessing his NC State visit is Thursday/Friday. Maybe we'll hear more from that end tomorrow.

==

Valdosta State center Michael Marotta announced a UCF offer and he tells me he is visiting this weekend. A native of Spring Hill, Fla. and Nature Coast Tech, it seems there is a great chance he will become a Knight.

VSU is a Division II school, so there are no PFF grades to reference. Other FBS schools like what they see on film - he also reported offers from Texas Tech, San Diego State, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Old Dominion, UMass and UTEP.

He would have two years of eligibility remaining.

It seems the North Texas center offered the other day is trending to go to Mississippi State.

==

UGA CB Nyland Green entered the portal today and is definitely one to watch with UCF. Chad Simmons of On3 said UCF, Arkansas and UNC will be players in his recruitment.

Green has seen mostly backup duty on defense while starting multiple special teams units.

==

Kansas State DE Nate Matlack reported a UCF offer today. Other offers include Colorado State, Pitt, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Texas State.

He was a backup at K-State this year, but saw plenty of reps during games. He finished with a season PFF grade of 58.0. His best game grade against FBS competition came against UCF (68.5). Matlack finished 2023 with 15 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 7.5 TFL.

Matlack did have a few starts in 2021 and 2022. Should have two years left. Originally from the Kansas City area.

I posted an interview with Tufts WR Jaden Richardson earlier this week, following his UCF OV. He added new offers today from Utah and Iowa State.

LB Kendre Gant from Port St. Joe originally committed to UCF in the Class of 2019, but was later dropped because of academics. He ultimately signed with FIU, then went to JUCO and resurfaced at Louisiana-Lafayette.

He was one of ULL's best defensive players with 64 tackles, 12.0 TFLs and 6.0 sacks. One year left.

UCF has some interest, we'll see what happens.

ULL deleted his 2023 bio from their website (hate it when schools do that) but here is his 2022 school profile.

UCF PHD Grad Killed in UNLV Campus Shooting

Really sad to report that one of the victims of the UNLV school shooting who passed away today was Patricia Navarro, a recent UCF business school PHD grad.

Will post more if I hear of anything we can do to support. Learned through a faculty member my wife knows at UNLV's business school.
