Revisiting the 2023 football schedule

I see UCF opening with wins over Kent State, Boise State, and Villanova to open 3-0.

Winning a road game in Manhattan and at home against Baylor, however, may be too daunting. Chris Klieman is one of the more underrated college football coaches in the nation, and Gus has never defeated a Dave Aranda-coached squad.

The Knights will also be underdogs in trips to Norman, Lawrence, and Cincinnati, but I can see UCF avoiding the sweep, with the Kansas tilt being a toss up that could go either way. I love Gus's chances against Neil Brown, Mike Gundy, and Joey McGuire to close the season.

All and all, I can *realistically* envision the Knights (7-4, 5-4) finishing with a winning inaugural Big12 record, closing strong at 5-0, and earning a bowl trip for a chance to secure eight wins.

(However, it would more to Gus's modus operandi to beat Oklahoma and Cincinnati but lose to West Virginia and Texas Tech.)

Note: Considering as of 2020, Oklahoma and Boise State have two of the nation's top three best regular season home winning percentages over the past two decades, a win against either team, much less both, will be a remarkable feat.

***UCF Transfer Portal News - Tuesday Recap***

***Make sure you read the part at the end***

Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough was coming off back-to-back visits to UCF and Louisville and he announced his commitment to the Cardinals on Tuesday night. An hour had barely passed before rumors started to swirl Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall would be visiting UCF this weekend. I was working to confirm and then On3 tweeted it out.

Obviously we have a long-running thread about the visit - it is believed McCall will look to make a decision shortly after next weekend. He was in the portal a year ago and at one point looked like he was Auburn-bound to play for new HC Hugh Freeze, but something happened in terms of transferable credits and he had to return to Coastal (I'm not 100 percent of the circumstances, I've seen a couple different versions).

Obviously big news, especially with the @UCF_Football and Kingdom socials making public teases about the visit.

Two more UCF portal exits today: CB Corey Thornton and LB Keenan Cupit.

Thornton is the player I was referencing in an earlier update about two defensive starters rumored to be leaving. 2023 was his best season at UCF. They would have welcomed him back, though I think Thornton thinks he can get an NIL payday elsewhere. I've heard he could end up at an SEC school.

Here's the portal exit list so far:

CB Fred Davis
RB Jordan McDonald
OL Drake Metcalf
WR Jaylon Griffin
WR Tyler Griffin
LB Keenan Cupit
CB Corey Thornton

Two players went public with UCF offers today:

LB Ethan Barr (Vanderbilt) - Team captain, 55 tackles with a sack and 3.0 TFL. Texas native with one year of eligibility remaining.

He also reported offers from Cincinnati, Baylor, Houston and Washington.

OL Omar Aigbedion (Montana State) - Native of Texas. Two years of eligibility remaining. His Twitter says he's the No. 1 guard in FCS according to PFF.

Other reported offers: Texas State, North Texas, UMass, Liberty, Boston College, Texas Tech, Arizona State, BYU.

I posted on Monday about the pending decisions of UCF's "big three" on offense - RJ Harvey, Kobe Hudson and Javon Baker. I asked Gus at Tuesday's press conference about a timeline for those players to make a decision (return or NFL). He said those are "three impact players we'd love to have back" and "we're having talks as we speak."

I continue to hear RJ Harvey and Kobe Hudson are planning to return to UCF in 2024. Things can change, but everything I'm hearing sounds incredibly optimistic.

Javon Baker remains a question mark, though some believe he could also be trending to return. I believe I'm very rock solid in my info (as of today) on RJ and Kobe's intentions. Javon is in an interesting place - I'm not sure his NFL grade is as high as he'd like it to be. He would like a mega NIL payday, but he's not a graduate so the portal is not an option. Not much leverage there.

NEW: Around the Kingdom - We good with the bowl game?

Join Eric Lopez and Trace Trylko as they debate some of the current topics surrounding UCF Athletics.

In this episode, the guys talk about the announcement of UCF to the Gasparilla Bowl against Georgia Tech. Is this a good matchup for the Knights, and how much attention will it draw nationally?

Ron DeSantis forgets UCF exists

"As Governor, I didn't go to any of the Florida universities. I've said from the beginning, I want us to get back to where Miami, Florida and Florida State are always competing for the National Championship. I want more of our bluechip high school recruits to stay in state."

He also thinks the 12-team playoff is "too many teams."

“There’s nothing wrong with The Kingdom NIL program.”

Also our creepy tiktok stalker wet blanket loser of an ad: “PLEASE DO NOT CRITICIZE THE PONZI SCHEMER IN CHARGE OF NIL. JUST DONATE DRONES! I PROMISE I AM NOT STEALING YOUR MONEY TO GIVE GUS ANOTHER SECRET EXTENSION!”

Now of course some of this is taking a piss and bashing this god awful ad. But you don’t see any other big time ad begging on Twitter for money. That’s done in private. Don’t like having this loser as the face of our athletic department.

***DJ McCormick commits to UCF: 'This is where I want to be' (w/ video interview) ⚔️🏈

Dreams became reality for DJ McCormick. At the conclusion of his official visit Sunday, the Rockledge (Fla.) linebacker committed to UCF.

"I'm happy right now," McCormick said afterward. "I feel blessed. Very happy. It was a great day... I camped here two years ago. I didn't get an offer then, but I took a visit around the school and did pictures inside the stadium. I envisioned this. I dreamed about it. I made it a goal of mine that I've got to play here. Now that it's here, I'm so happy."

McCormick's offer would arrive in January just after his junior season. He would visit multiple times throughout the spring, including returning a week ago for Bounce House Weekend on an unofficial basis. This visit was special.

"I loved this weekend," McCormick said. "The way they treated us. The way they treated everybody. You can see the family atmosphere at UCF. It's more about life outside of football for them. That's important to me. Academics too. They explained all that."

His player host was defensive end Jamaal Johnson. Among the fun activities was an outing to International Drive, which including go-karts at Dezerland Park and a ride on the Orlando SlingShot.

"I feel they did a great job matching me with (Johnson)," McCormick said. "I feel our personalities were similar. I chatted him up, asked him questions about the staff. He confirmed this is where I wanted to be."

His primary recruiter and future position coach is Ernie Sims.

"I love Coach Ernie Sims," McCormick said. "He's been recruiting me since I was a freshman. He was who I wanted to be my coach. I've seen him coach. I met his whole family. He's very big on family. I got my family connected to his family."

As a junior, McCormick recorded 119 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

"We had a great discussion (about linebacker)," McCormick said. "(Sims) told me since I've got an athletic frame, I could play mike or will. But I enrolled today he'd probably put me at the will since I'm an athlete that can cover and make the open-field tackle."

What is he known for?

"I think I hit pretty well," McCormick said. "I make plays, create turnovers, picks, fumbles, all that."

On Sunday, the recruits ate breakfast at head coach Gus Malzahn's house.

"He's got a nice house," McCormick said. "He showed us his man cave. They cooked breakfast for us. It was a great time."

McCormick explained how the commitment went down.

"I did it in Coach Malzahn's office," he said. "He's like, 'What do you want to do?' I told him right on the spot, 'This is where I want to be.' I want to be able to put on for my city. One of the main reasons I feel like it's a great opportunity. My family can come to the games and people from my city. I want to put on for the whole Central Florida."

Since he arrived a couple years ago, Malzahn has made a big emphasis on recruiting the local Central Florida area. McCormick is the latest "Hometown Hero."

"It definitely means a lot to me," he said. "I can put on and perform in front of my people that I've known my whole life. It's exciting."

McCormick, who is canceling visits to Kansas and Pittsburgh, plans to be at all the home games this fall for UCF's inaugural Big 12 season. Now that UCF has elevated to the Power Five level, McCormick said the goal is to win it all.

"I want to win a National Championship," McCormick said. "Coach Gus Malzahn made that clear. That's what we're gonna do. That's the biggest one, winning a National Championship. I'd like to get some awards, like All-American. But winning a National Championship is what I want. This class is going to be special."

UCF Women’s Soccer

Question to soccer supporters. What should Terry do?

Amanda Cromwell handed the reins of a successful women’s program over to a former World Cup champion almost one decade ago.

Reality: (Wikipedia) Florida State Seminoles

On March 29, 2022, Mark Krikorian resigned as head coach;[3] Tennessee coach Brian Pensky was subsequently hired as his replacement. Pensky experienced immediate success with the Seminoles, leading the team to the College Cup in his first season. He followed the Semifinal appearance with the team's FOURTH national championship in 2023 and finished undefeated.[4]

Fan Portal Thread

I want to announce as an UCF alum, class's of 1992 ,the First graduating class to shake Dr. Hitt's hand , that I have talked it over with my family and after much consideration, I will be returning to UCF as a long time season ticket holder and modicum Charge On and Kimgdom NIL contributor. I was thinking of entering the fan portal and had my sites set on the school in Tallahassee, but I followed the Committees snub and decided to stay put . This place is special and with the right fans here , this place can go far. Blessed to receive my season ticket renewal and its price increases . 🙌
