OT: TODAY (Jollibees opening near UCF)

Set to open next Wednesday, 1/18, near the intersection of 50 and Alafaya. I imagine the grand opening will be pretty packed.

OT- CCA Knights banquet

Saw this pop up in my email. It’s says it’s the 7th annual but it is the first time I have gotten an email. It’s in the Carl Black Cabana Club. I like to support the CCA and we usually fish in some of their tournaments yearly. Posting if anyone is interested. Event is on March 31st.

[OT] Big Energy Crunch

Oil might be down under $100/barrel again, but with all of our allies, even the US, having Natural Gas as a key backfill and bridge for decades to come, the predicted 'worse case scenario' is now coming true.

While the 'I don't understand energy economics and geography' blind faith members of the 'Church of Popular Environmentalism' quietly support Biden buying more petroleum from unregulated, overseas producers, while we continue to sack even any domestic inquiries (let alone production), the 'worst case scenario' just hit because, unlike extracting domestic shale, we don't get a glut of natural gas from importing petroleum. 'Natural Gas is bad... don't do Natural Gas. We have magic pixie dust.'

Darin Hinshaw

Sorry, I just can’t read through all the (often pointless) multiple post in the other threads.

Darin was our quarterback when I was an undergraduate. I am so excited for him and for us. I hope he kills it and will support him to the end. If it does not work out, he will be the first to know but I think we are going to see the emergence of an eventual HC.

We’ve made so many great advances over the years. Think about the Middle Tennessee States, the UABs, the Ga Southerns, USFs, Eastern Kentuckys, the Northern Illinois out there and appreciate what we have accomplished. All of them and more have been attempting to do what we’ve accomplished. Are we the only school who has gone from nothing and progressed to a P5 conference that was never before in a major conference? I think so….

Actually having one of our own come home and take a major role in our program is what we’ve been waiting for and is just another indication of how far we’ve come. How far we have come against all odds. When you think about the fact that the top 25 teams today, essentially are the same top 25 teams 10,20,30,40 years ago. What this program has accomplished is astonishing. (Yeah I know, thanks for stating the obvious) but I’m not certain how much it’s appreciated. Particularly with the younger alumni.

Having Darin Hinshaw spend 30+ years learning his craft and then come back to his alma mater is “fing” a big deal. It’s just one more step toward being a brand name.
He’s hungry, he’s smart, he wants to see us be successful. He is going to work to not fail. This is a destination not a stepping stone in his career.
He is going to do great and Will bring that passion into recruiting homes. All of us should embrace it.

This is an excellent situation and one we’ve been waiting to happen. The next step is to have one of our own for our next head coach.

I’m just ecstatic over this hire, I get similar feelings when I see other alumni rise in the ranks of their professions.

***UCF offers Harvard transfer OL Mason Williams (interview)***

UCF continues to look at the NCAA Transfer Portal to fortify its offensive line.

Harvard's Mason Williams, a first team All-Ivy League selection, received a UCF offer on Tuesday after meeting with offensive line coach Herb Hand.

It's an intriguing opportunity for the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native who has also garnered offers from Stanford and Colorado State in recent days.

"What I like about UCF is the location, their transition into the Big 12 and the leeway I would have in the graduate program," Williams said. "They also offer an opportunity to come in and compete right away for a starting job."

William has played both guard positions and center during his Crimson career. UCF is primarily interested in his ability to play left guard. That spot is open following the graduation of Sam Jackson.

He is on track to graduate from Harvard this May with a government degree and would enroll at his next school this summer. He is looking at business-related graduate programs and he said Hand discussed several possibilities in terms of what UCF could offer.

"Since I'm in no rush, we talked about taking a visit around middle to late March to watch a spring ball practice," Williams said.

A member of the high school class of 2019 from Middle Tennessee Christian, Williams didn't play his first season at Harvard (which can count as a redshirt) while his 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic. Since then, he's been a two-year starter in 2021 and 2022 and is coming off his best season to date. In addition to the official first team Ivy League honor, Williams earned the same award from Phil Steele's publication.

UCF has increasingly looked to the portal for offensive line depth. Two of the five starters in 2022 were portal players - tackles Ryan Swoboda and Tylan Grable. There's a good chance UCF's 2023 line will see a majority of its starters coming from the portal given the winter additions of tackles Amari Kight (Alabama) and Marcellus Marshall (Kent State) and center Bula Schmidt (Fresno State).

Big 12 football: Projecting every team's 2023 starting QB

UCF — JOHN RHYS PLUMLEE

Another returning starter. The No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 class, Plumlee started his college career at Ole Miss, rushing for 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman. And while his role shrank as Matt Corral emerged, Plumlee fared well after transferring to UCF. In his first year with the Knights, he connected on 63% of his passes for 2,586 yards and 14 touchdowns with eight interceptions, rushing for 862 yards and 11 touchdowns. Having a returning starting quarterback, particularly one who forces defenses to respect his running ability, could be a big deal in UCF’s first year in the Big 12.

Softball Ranked 15th Nationally in D1Softball Preseason Top 25

ORLANDO – A 2022 season that culminated in the first NCAA Super Regional berth in program history represented the latest step forward for a UCF softball team on the rise, and with the Knights' latest achievement comes heightened national recognition.

D1Softball.com released its preseason top 25 rankings Tuesday afternoon, a poll that saw the Knights land at No. 15 among all Division I softball programs in the country. UCF is also the lone representative from The American in the publication's preseason poll.

The Knights, along with the rest of the nation, will once again be chasing the reigning Women's College World Series champion Oklahoma Sooners, ranked No. 1, with UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida State and Florida rounding out the top five.

Throughout their scheduled 2023 campaign, UCF will also square off against seven members of D1Softball.com's preseason top 25 in second-ranked UCLA, third-ranked Oklahoma State, fifth-ranked Florida, sixth-ranked Alabama, 10th-ranked Georgia, 20th-ranked Louisiana and 22nd-ranked Duke.

The ranking marked the highest of any non-Power Five school in the country and represents the latest progression for a team consistently setting and surpassing new standards. UCF began its 2022 slate picked to finish third in The American's preseason coaches poll and received votes in the first release of the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.

Upon the conclusion of their standout 49-win 2022 campaign, the Knights garnered the No. 13 national ranking from D1Softball.com, the highest of their four top-15 rankings from D1Softball.com, USA Today/NFCA Top 25 (14), Softball America (14), and ESPN/USA Softballl Top 25 (15).

The Knights in 2022 notched their winningest campaign since the team went 50-9 in 2015 with a 49-14 record overall, as well as a conference-best 16-2 mark in The American. En route to their team-best finish to the season, UCF clinched its third American Athletic Conference title, second American Athletic Conference Tournament championship, and ninth postseason appearance.

UCF made quick work of Villanova and Michigan in the Orlando regional, topping the Wildcats 6-0 before downing the Wolverines in consecutive games by 3-2 (11 innings) and 9-4 final scores.

The Knights then drew a matchup with the eventual-champion Sooners, falling in consecutive games in the NCAA Super Regionals at Marita Hynes Field in Norman, Oklahoma.
