good discussion, good times
Update: The SG budget hearings take place next week on 12/12 and 12/13. While you are likely gone for break your peers will determine how to cut not 10%... but 14%. Roughly $3M from a $21M budget.
This is due to a decrease in revenue and signficant increase in expenses for the very specific fee we all pay per state law that can be used for very specific purposes, per state law.
Revenue is down because:
- total credit hours are down. just as many of us enrolled but collectively taking fewer hours. This probably could have been projected by someone whose job it was to project this but they clearly f'd up.
- the fee has not been permitted by the current and prior governor to be increased, even by pennies as it had been increasing throughout its history
Expenses are up because:
- Unless you're living under a rock, everything is more expensive. Food, utilities, costs of goods and services, you name it.
- Minimum wage goes up a dollar each year. Businesses can pass the cost of labor on to customers. UCF cannot charge you more by law, even if you were willing to pay a few bucks more a year. I guess that's good but you get what you pay for.
You should attend if you care (I think it's in the SU - they do a bad job about publicizing this). We're looking at major slashes or endings to things you may care about (concerts, homecoming, programming, gym hours, intermurals... universal knights)
If you can't attend, I'd visit the SG website and send your concerns in that direction.
Please no replies about:
- lazy rivers. has nothing to do with the price of tea in china. private funds. different budgets.
- hotels. again, ucf didn't pay for it and doesn't own it
- athletics. again, again. different source of funds, independent budget
- the president's salary. also again, not paid for by these funds. I mean you can reply about these things it's a free country but... bless your heart.
Prep for some pain. This is not unique to UCF, other state schools are in a similar boat!
