OT: Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Just spent 6 days in the hospital and the diagnosis was GBS. I had a bit of a stomach virus for a few days around Christmas and noticed a few days before that my chest and parts of my body were kinda numb. It started getting worse in my whole lower body starting at my lower back/butt, including my 🥜, to my toes were numb. I thought it was like maybe a pinched nerve or something like that, but everything thing being numb should have been a sign. I was able to walk but not that easily and didn’t lose a ton of strength, but it became very hard to move my toes while I was up north for a week and immediately went to the ER when I got home Saturday. Ran every test possible including 2 straight hours in an MRI, blood work, ultrasounds, etc and everything was negative, then had a spinal tap and that was enough data to give this diagnosis. They believe it was viral because there was no bacterial or spinal issues. It is also a side effect of vaccines (Doctor and nurse said they will never get a vaccine) but I haven’t had one since probably the fake fauci flu 2 jabs

I did 5 rounds of IVIG treatments. Doctor said my timing was perfect, coming in too early they might not have thought it was this, wait too long and the ascending paralysis I may not me able to walk or use my arms…and it is deadly when it gets into your heart/lungs, etc. They called it abnormal GBS because the spinal fluid test results weren’t textbook, but basically I got it early.

I have seen some posts previous on GBS and wondered if anyone else has had it or knew someone who has. I am curious the recovery timeline process and if there is anything else that helped. As of now it’s just wait and see. People I talked too were all very worried because for most it was very serious, months in the hospital, etc. I’m still not out of the woods, I’m about 2 weeks in and the cycle is usually 4 weeks of getting worse, then plateau’s and it takes months if not years to fully recover. Hopefully the IVIG at least stops the progress, starting to see small steps of progress.

OT: Watches Thread ⌚

I’ve recently gone down the rabbit hole of watches. Share your favorite watches, dream watches, under the radar watches, bargain watches that look expensive, etc, etc

This might help some people at Christmas time too.

Here’s a brand that I recently discovered that has some really cool watches at reasonable prices.

The Maturation of Malzahn and State of the UCF Football Program

Where was this Gus Malzahn when he was coaching at Auburn? Gus has made "some of" the best moves of his coaching career this postseason.

KEEPING THE BEST PLAYERS IN HOUSE: Aside from losing Javon Baker to the NFL, Gus has kept the best UCF players in the fold with crafty NIL allocations. (Thornton is perhaps the only player who left for greener pastures.) UCF will likely have to wait until after Spring Ball to refill its NIL coffers and sign a true X receiver out of the portal. In the meantime, Kobi Hudson and Goldie Lawrence will get the first cracks at the position this spring.

'ROSTA MAN'AGEMENT: For the first time in his career, Gus is operating like an ELITE college football head coach, not "an old high school coach." Gus has sheered from the roster seven (or eight) scared bird scavengers, including two starters (three if you count Alec Holler), inherited from the old staff. Gus even showed six (four transfers and two HS signees) of his own out. Gus may have been a fan of Hammer in the '90s, but Vanilla would definitely stan for this 2024 Gus: Login to view embedded media
LOCKING UP QB1 FOR 2024 AND BEYOND: Gus is bringing in the highest profile quarterback transfer (who didn't get kicked out of his previous school) in Gus's and UCF's history: A 3-year starter who is arguably the greatest QB in Arkansas football history and fits Gus's offense "perfectly." It is hard to upgrade a position more than replacing a converted position player under center with K.J. Jefferson. (In comparison to JRP, Jefferson has accounted for nearly 10,000 yards and almost 80 touchdowns in 38 starts at the position he will be playing at UCF.) Gus also pulled another coup by getting EJ Colson to reclassify and sign in the Class of 2024. Given Colson's success on the field and how he was trending in the 2025 rankings, it is highly doubtful the Knights would have held onto his commitment had he played his senior season of high school football.

WORKING MAGIC ON A BUDGET: Gus and UCF do not have the funding to match other programs on transfer portal acquisitions. The Knights, however, are putting the final touches on a Top 10 portal class of "mids" ($1 to @LoboCane). UCF has signed three transfer safeties with 50 combined starts, two transfer linebackers with 30 combined starts, and an FCS All-American edge rusher with 22 career starts.

PREPPING FOR THE FUTURE: UCF is bringing in the highest rated class in school history. The majority of defensive signees are early enrollees. Crazy to think the greatest class of incoming freshmen ever at UCF is so low on the totem pole of importance for Year 2 in Big 12 play. Most signees, however, will receive a redshirt.

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED: UCF has held pat or upgraded every offensive and defensive position, except wide receiver, offensive line, defensive end, and maybe cornerback. This offseason has witnessed the best program advancement of Gus's career, but there's still work to do...

ADDRESSING THE COACHING STAFF: The coaching contracts expire Jan. 31. It will be interesting to see what changes are made to the defensive assistants. Gus has already disposed of wide receivers coach Grant Heard and hired a new Strength & Conditioning Coach and an Associate AD show(wo)man.

FILLING HOLES: UCF will need to continue to make roster changes in the next portal cycle. The Knights are a deep threat X receiver, strongside defensive end, and possibly an offensive guard away from contending for a Big 12 championship and CFP spot in Year 2 of league play.

UCF sports cards….

So I bought my son a box of these cards from Target, box was $30. I’d never heard of the brand, figured we’d try something new. 13/16 of the Big 12 schools were represented and of course we’re not one. Would’ve loved to purchase some cards with the possibility of getting some UCF players. We got a pack of Purdue players 💩
Got 2 packs of Penn State and an Ohio State. Wouldn’t this be additional NIL opportunity for our guys with stuff like this?

Scott Frost: UCF vs Nebraska - an interview with The Athletic's Mitch Sherman

With Scott Frost returning to UCF, we caught up with Mitch Sherman, who covers Nebraska for The Athletic.

Sherman provides some insight on Frost's tenure at Nebraska, specifically examining how things went wrong in Lincoln.

Will Frost be successful again as he returns to UCF, Sherman thinks there are some reasons why this could be a better fit.

The race is on: Congress vs NLRB over the future of college athletes

Congress will introduce a bill on NIL this week that covers several issues regarding NCAA athletics, namely:

  • Safeguards “from retaliation by an institution of higher education for student-athletes who have signed a NIL deal.”
  • The creation of a “new regulatory body tasked with establishing and enforcing rules pertaining to collectives, boosters, and student-athlete endorsement contracts. Student-athletes who enter into a contract will be required to report their agreement to this new body and their university within a specified period.” Collectives are booster- and business-driven groups that have formed to pool resources and provide NIL opportunities for athletes at schools since the NCAA has made rule changes substantially enhancing athletes’ ability to make money not only from endorsements, but also from personal appearances, autograph signings and other activities.
  • A provision “clarifying that student-athletes are not eligible for employee status.”
  • Language “providing liability protection to protect institutions from frivolous litigation.”

That third bullet runs counter to a pending lawsuit and a NLRB ruling issued last week that said that SA's in football, men's basketball, and women's basketball should be classified as employees. That case will go before an administrative law judge in November, but can be appealed and could take a lot more time to resolve.

There are significant hurdles in Congress as well, as the bill itself has yet to be filed - there's a bill in the Senate that also is in development and there are several different attitudes - even within parties - as to what should these bills truly cover.

The bottom line is that within the next two years (maybe even in the next 12 months) we could have a major showdown on how college athletes are classified and how major college sports will run.
