2025 College Football Previews - John Walker on Lindy's cover

I saw last year on this date, I purchased Lindys 2024 magazine and wanted to see what 2025’s cover looked like. Definitely will snag it once I see it at Publix.

OT: Grocery Delivery Services

Are grocery/store delivery services unreliable?

I hardly ever use them but had a medical procedure yesterday and have a full leg cast and crutches.

I placed an order at Target that wasn’t ever delivered. The shopper called me saying they were outside my apartment, wanting to know where to park. I told him, waited about 45 minutes, and got a notification the order was delivered with a picture of proof of delivery. The picture looked like someone took a picture of their hand.

Target gave me a refund and told me to re-order, I did, but it’s now 25 minutes past the end of the delivery time and the shopper hasn’t started shopping yet.

Is this just bad luck, or are these services utter crap?

Update: the second order was delivered an hour late.

Here is how much it costs to get college mascots at your wedding

Knightro had better come with some free legal advice for what he’s charging. $500/hr + $50 travel expense. Most expensive in the conference of those who reported, but not the most expensive in FBS. That would be Puddles at Oregon or Sparty at Michigan State, who each charge $1500.

Serious question with the hope being there can be a real, civil discussion:

If Putin were to step out of a high window or his transportation would experience rapid disassembly, who would emerge as the new leader of Russia?

Please include a link to some type of profile/bio so we can all read about them.

Thanks!

[OT] Need a PI or similiar access/expertise (background check)

Since we have so many SMEs in various disciplines on here, I'd rather have an expert weigh in on my options, if any, especially for obvious legal reasons.

Problem: I've got a county in Illinois that has been 'unresponsive' to a 3rd party, outsourced, 'background check' company (NOT federal, but civil/private) for over a month.

Question: How can I find out, legally, what records that county has on me, or has attributed to someone with the same/similar name as me (#1 most common surname, #3-8 most common given names, although less than common spellings)? I really want to understand the 'hold up' here. It's not the first time.

Backstory ...

Although my drug test and all other background investigations cleared in less than a week in early May, after I accepted an offer at the end of April, I'm now over 5 weeks into a background check because of 1 county in Illinois that has been 'unresponsive' to the 3rd party doing the background check.

So, for those that might have caught wind, mid-April my employer decided to shut down my project by October (now closer to end of year). We weren't told until it went national (all over the news) that existing DoD and federal contracts had been cut. It wasn't a surprise, after new contracts were not being offered mid-February. I asked around and had many offers, from NASA to DoD contractors, and one moved forward, especially since I have repeatedly helped them in the past (on-site, without payment).

My offer is contingent on this background check by a 3rd party. It's not even OPM/DoD, that's still active, and I'm under 'continual evaluation' (and I'm still 'eligible' for everything, even if not everything is 'active'). This happened with my current job last year, where the background check got 'held up' for months, and they finally just 'took on the risk.' Luckily it came in just before I started, solving the issue more permanently. I'm now interested if it was the same county in Illinois too. **

I'm afraid that might be the case this time, and my new employer is not willing to take on the risk, despite my federal 'continual evaluation.'

** Back in the early '00s, my vehicle was continually flagged by the Florida DMV for an outstanding, out of state arrest. Luckily in that case, when it became an issue, there was PI assigned to me by a company that ran into it during my 'interim, higher clearance' that immediately was able to Iand see an actual mugshot that was, obviously, not me. I was then able to tell officers that every time I was stopped, quickly 'de-escalating' things, and they would be 'more amenable' to checking things (like the DL, picture, etc...) before 'detaining me.'

OT: Boston College goes outside Nike/Adidas/UA for new apparel deal

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College Athletics has entered a historic, 10-year agreement with Boston-based New Balance Athletics to become the Official Footwear and Apparel Provider for the Eagles. The deal will begin on June 1, 2021.

The largest financial footwear and apparel agreement in Boston College athletics history gives New Balance the right to provide uniforms, apparel, and footwear for 30 of BC's 31 varsity sports. The partnership will also include the opportunity for Boston College student-athletes to be part of an annual internship program at New Balance.

"This partnership will be an absolute game-changer for Boston College athletics and our student-athletes," said William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Pat Kraft. The opportunities for our student-athletes to assist in product design and development of the footwear and apparel they will actually wear and compete in will be transformational."

[OT] Starlink for Internet

Just curious if anyone has Starlink for Internet, especially as the network has filled in. With AT&T jacking up the price on even crappy, old ADSL, it's not much more.

I understand the latency, but it's much better than old geosychronous satellites, and basically not much worse than 4G/5G wireless Internet. I have that at my new place in Huntsville (T-mobile 5G is working well, better than Verizon's), since the wired options are just as bad at my home mid-state.

Long story short, I live in a very beautiful, but hilly area -- which is blocking even 600 & 700MHz towers -- where most everyone has 3-40 acres (myself included). So there are only a few dozen of us, and it's not worth anyone running any cable, despite some of the rural initiatives here. I'd start my own service provider, but I'm not at my home throughout the week (at least not right now, that may change). There's a fiber trunk only 1.4 miles away, but it's the university, let alone DSL really doesn't run over a mile.

Again, AT&T isn't going to spend the money to upgrade any copper, much less lay fiber, for a couple dozen homes over many square miles. And yes, again, I've tried wireless Internet, it's just too hilly. But I'm not paying $80 for 10/1Mbps ADSL ... asychronous, any burst upload kills it. Otherwise, the 20ms latency is pretty good, and even fine for video conferencing.

Hence the inquiry about Starlink. It's probably worth it at this point, especially if I take on more remote work in the coming weeks.

From the Desk of Terry Mohajir: UCF's approach to Rev Share, NIL & House Settlement

Dear Knight Nation,

College athletics is entering a bold new era—and at UCF, we’re not just ready for the change, we’re energized by it. This moment brings exciting new opportunities for our student-athletes and our athletics department, and we’re proud to embrace it with confidence and purpose.

The recent approval of the NCAA House Settlement marks a pivotal moment in our industry. While the financial landscape will change—most notably with the NCAA distributing $2.8 billion to former and current student-athletes and reducing distributions to schools like ours over the next decade—UCF is meeting this new reality with strategic investment, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to our student-athletes.

Defunct screen names - where did they go?

A little off-season doldrums filler material.

What are some screen names/posters that were once prevalent but now seemingly extinct? Did people mostly change their screen names or just move on?

I used to post as UCFK when I first joined around 2003. I said it stood for UCF Knights but my juvenile brain knew better. I suspect most knew better as well.

There are lots of old names that I remember but I will just throw out one to get the ball rolling. KOLD (Knight of the Living Dead). I should have done a search before posting but it is a name I haven't seen in forever.

UCF Athletics set to change concessions/food provider

Summary of Key Observations/Recommendations

UCF Athletics is bringing forward a proposed agreement to the Board of Trustees that stems from the Invitation to Negotiate (ITN # UCFAA ITB 2025-01AH), which was initiated in January 2025. This ITN was developed with the goal of securing a forward-thinking and proactive partner to manage food services across key UCF Athletics venues, including FBC Mortgage Stadium, Addition Financial Arena, The Venue, John Euliano Park, UCF Softball Complex, UCF Soccer Complex, the Garvy Center, and other facilities identified in the solicitation. The resulting agreement outlines exclusive rights and responsibilities for Concessions, Premium Food Services, and Training Table Services, as well as a non-exclusive opportunity to provide Catering Services within the Kenneth G. Dixon Athletics Village.

To ensure a thorough and thoughtful selection process, an eight-member committee composed of athletics and university leaders reviewed proposals from the industry’s top providers. Out of nine (9) companies invited, four (4) declined to participate, and two (2) submitted a joint proposal – ultimately leading to four competitive bids. After careful evaluation, the committee selected Levy as the recommended partner due to their strong combination of capital investment, innovative design concepts, competitive commission offerings, and the ability to deliver high-quality, cost-effective training table services for student-athletes.

This agreement marks a significant step forward for UCFAA and directly aligns with our strategic objectives. It will generate meaningful revenue through a substantial signing bonus and an enhanced commission structure on food and beverage sales. In addition, Levy’s commitment to upgrading fan concessions through capital improvements will help elevate the game-day experience across multiple venues. Their national reputation, paired with strong local infrastructure, makes them a powerful partner in fueling both fan engagement and student-athlete performance. Ultimately, this partnership not only strengthens UCFAA’s operational excellence, but also reflects UCF’s rising stature as a member of the Big 12 Conference, reinforcing our regional and national momentum.
