Though rosters are not totally set in stone, college football's transfer portal slammed shut April 30, and UCF spent the majority of May looking to bolster its squad to take a run at the title in the new-look Big 12.

Harrison Butker's Commencement Speech

The Chief's kicker, a conservative Catholic, recently gave a commencement address at a small conservative Catholic college in Kansas. In it, he basically said women should appreciate that their purpose in life is to be 'barefoot and pregnant.' Given Butker's celebrity status as a member of the World Champion Chiefs, this speech went viral and received an understandable national backlash. (link below.)

Butker is entitled to his opinions and is entitled to share them with an audience who agrees with him (FYI, he received a standing ovation at the end of it.) My issue is when Catholics like Butker want to push their religious beliefs on the rest of us non-Catholics. This story wouldn't be 'a thing' if Catholics weren't attempting to turn the United States into their own little theocracy. If you are Catholic, I'm cool with whatever you choose to believe. But when Catholic theocrats weasel their way on to the Supreme Court in order to turn the once-settled abortion argument into a state-by-state clusterf**k, the separation between church and state line has been crossed.

There's a reason why our founding fathers built this protection into the Constitution.

Kind of a random shower thought I had tonight, but it's been a slow day on the board.

Growing up in the pre-smartphone era, I always wore watches for obvious reasons (like, you needed to know the time). Had a cool Casio calculator/world time watch in middle school. Had some generic Seiko or equivalents during most of the 2000s.

On my way home from the Tulane road game in 2010, my watch got lost going through TSA at the airport. In the pre-smartphone era, you didn't always carry your phone everywhere, but by this time, 2010, I always did and realized the watch I always used to wear wasn't really necessary anymore. So I stopped wearing a watch. Didn't really care about the "fashion" element of watch wearing, just the practicality.

I know people are getting into smart watches now, fitness trackers, etc.

Lol, just kind of curious.

Around The Kingdom - Is Florida the Knights Super Bowl?

Join Eric Lopez and Trace Trylko as they debate some of the current topics surrounding UCF Athletics.

In this episode, the guys talk about a re-visit of a topic from last week and consider a listener comment lamenting the game at Florida being treated as UCF's Super Bowl.

Plus, changes continue coming in college athletics, this time with additional eligibility and creating revenue through practice tickets.

Also: Is college baseball a free agent frenzy, how did Men's and Women's Soccer grade out this season, Rayniah Jones gets some love, and what was the best TV ending?

Thanks for clicking here for this week's Around the Kingdom from the Sons of UCF.

Congrats to UCFAA staffers for CoSIDA Awards (social media/design/photography)

The "trade" organization for college sports information/communications/media relations departments is now called "College Sports Communicators." For decades, it was known as CoSIDA.

At their annual convention in Las Vegas, three UCF employees were honored with the top awards.

Ava Buric is Designer of the Year.

Conor Kvatek won Photo of the Year, for his Xavier Townsend touchdown celebration shot.

Robert Connoly and Alex Garmon had the No. 1 "Signing Day Package" award for what they did with football.

Other honorees that placed:

Gabe Starner finished in 8th place under the Long Form Video/Recap category for his MBB Cinematic vs. Kansas.

Erin Caban finished in 6th place under the Short Form Video/Reel for a tennis recap.

Phaedra Blaze finished in 11th place for a non-gameday graphic of Javon Baker being All-Big 12.

Kind of interesting to look at the stuff that was honored. I'll try to dig up the UCF-related content:

Concerning tackling statistics from 2023

The 2024 defense will look unlike any other over the past three seasons, as UCF lost 8 of it top 10 tacklers, including 6 of its top 7, from 2023.

The Knights lost 53% of its tacking production (447 of 841 tackles) with the departures of eight defenders: Jason Johnson (114), Walter Yates (80), Tre'Mon Morris-Brash (56), Nikai Martinez (54), Josh Celiscar (47), Jireh Wilson (46), Corey Thornton (27), and Decorian Patterson (23).

UCF returns only four top 10 tacklers from 2023 in Lee Hunter (69), Demari Henderson (45), Quadric Bullard (34), and Malachi Lawrence (27), who tied for 10th with Thornton.

UCF returns its four leading interior defensive line tacklers in Hunter, John Walker (24), Ricky Barber (18), and Matthew Alexander (16).

Demari Henderson, Bullard, Braeden Marshall (22), Brandon Adams (21), William Wells (14), and Ja'Cari Henderson (11) return after finishing with double digit tackles in the secondary.

Kam Moore (11) is the only returning linebacker to record 10 tackles or more.

These 11 tacklers, along with Lawrence, are the only returning Knights who finished with 10 tackles or more last season.

Putting in work

I've mentioned this in here a few times, but BR truly is doing all he can to be in the field this year. Case and point just from the start of this video, he is practicing/training by himself at 1:30 AM. I am not even trying to gas him up either, I just know talking to him, staff, and other players....he is CONSTANTLY working on his game (so are many others so this is not to say he is the only one...just the only one documenting it) to fine tune the smaller details and improve as much as he can as quickly as he can. I have a feeling he is going to be a fan favorite very quickly.

X (who is already a fan favorite as an example) can also been seen working with BR in a decent chunk of the vid.

OT: UF Coach fired for sharing his bed with his athletes

No Bueno.

One on One with UCF Baseball Head Coach Rich Wallace

UCF Baseball Coach Rich Wallace sat down with Trace Trylko on the one year anniversary of his hire at UCF. And what a year it was, as UCF made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2017, and made the final series in the Regional with wins over Alabama and Stetson.

Wallace and the Knights also had some success in year one of the Big 12, finishing with a 37-21 overall, including 14 wins in conference. Coming into the offseason, Wallace will look to continue to bolster his 2025 roster and fill gaps from departing players.

OT: It may never rain again in Orlando this year

Most of Central Florida is already in a drought period and with 90+ temps late next week...there is very little chance of rain in Orlando till May 5th...when a 33% chance of rain is currently predicted for that Sunday and 46% chance of rain for Monday, May 6th .

Someone better do a rain dance soon...or I'm worried about my Water Service running out of water for our yards!
