***Scott Frost opens up about his return to UCF in SiriusXM interview***

dosprmch3jog7mqauaqu

On the heels of his reintroduction at UCF, Scott Frost gave his first national interview Thursday to Dusty Dvoracek and Danny Kanell, co-hosts of 'Dusty and Danny in the Morning' on SiriusXM College Sports Radio.

Frost's first head coaching job was at UCF from 2016-17, his final season culminating in a perfect 13-0 finish and Peach Bowl victory. From there, Frost spent four-plus seasons as head coach at Nebraska and spent this past season with the LA Rams.

"I loved it here the first time I was here," Frost said. "I love the talent that's right around here and just the lifestyle. It's really important to win here, but it wasn't quite the meat grinder that some of these jobs are. I was out in LA with the Rams and helping out actually on special teams, just to kind of get back into coaching. That's such a first class outfit with Sean (McVay) and Les (Snead) and all the guys that I really wasn't intending to even look for a job. And then Gus (Malzahn) stepped away and this one opened, and the whole thing moved fast. This was just an opportunity I couldn't say no to."

Asked about his growth as a coach since his first stint at UCF, Frost said his experience with the Rams was particularly eye opening.

"You learn through highs and you learn through lows," Frost said. "If you think you know everything already then, then you're just stuck in the mud and not learning anything. You learn how to do things, how not to do things.

"Being out there with those guys in Los Angeles really opened to my eyes to some different ways to do things and different approaches. I've been growing since I got into this business and will continue to do so, but now I get to do it in a place where I really want to live. Orlando's beautiful, everybody wants to be here, and I can plant some roots and let my kids grow up in a good place where Disney is down the street."

December is an extremely hectic month in the college football calendar between high school signing day and transfer portal. It becomes an incredibly difficult situation when you're stepping into a new job and are tasked with hiring a staff. What is the first priority?

"I'm not even sure staff is the first thing anymore," Frost said. "I'm working on about three things at the same time. I had to evaluate our roster and make sure kids are staying and not leaving, doing what we could do there. And work on staff at the same time and get integrated.

"This is probably going to be the busiest time of year for coaches. The bad thing is we got a roster to rebuild here, but the good thing is we have a roster to rebuild. You don't have to do it through recruiting and developing in three years anymore. If you get the right players, you can come in and get the roster flipped quick. We got some really good pieces on this team, and some holes. So we got opportunities for kids. A lot of kids are calling us that want to be back in Florida and playing in a place like this."

Frost's first official hire was bringing back McKenzie Milton as quarterbacks coach.

"He is like an Orlando legend after what he did down here," Frost said. "The guy is just a football player and a baller and he's gonna be an elite coach. So I'm excited to give him his first opportunity to do that. I'll be working with the offense and be right there alongside him. I don't know if the fans would've been too happy with me down here if I hadn't gotten him back in Orlando."

UCF was in the American during Frost's first time around in Orlando. Now they're in the Power Four as a member of the Big 12.

"I've been watching from afar," Frost said. "When I was here the first time UCF was growing. Every time you look at this place, Orlando and UCF, about every four years later, it's a completely different place. The rise and ascension has been really amazing when you've kind of kept your pulse on UCF and where it was and what it's become.

"I have a guy that's been probably going to be on staff that played receiver here, Sean Beckton. And when he played here, this was a I-AA school and then they got to be a mid-major and then all of a sudden they're in the Big 12. There's not a lot of schools that have had the rapid rise in ascension like UCF has had. We're just still kind of in the beginning stages of that. You know, UCF graduates the most undergrads I think in the whole country every year. And that alumni base is growing, the fan support is growing, in a beautiful city with a beautiful campus. So the growth potential here is huge. And I think we're honestly just on an early stage of that."

The team predicted to finish last in the Big 12, Arizona State, just won the conference championship.

"That's one of the things that's attractive to me is I think (the Big 12 is) the most equitable and fair league that's out there," Frost said. "This isn't a league where there's three teams at the top that nobody else is ever gonna beat. Kenny (Dillingham) did an unbelievable job this year. I have a ton of respect for places that I've coached against, Kansas State, Iowa State, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State. You can make an argument that anybody in this league, if they put things together, has a chance to win the league. And that's fun ball to me.

"Obviously we got a challenge ahead of us to make sure that we're one of the teams competing for that. But, it's the type of ball that I like to coach. I already knew that Orlando and the type of players we can get here fit us and our scheme really well."

The other big news of this coaching carousel cycle is North Carolina's hire of former New England Patriots GM and head coach Bill Belichick. UCF hosts UNC in week four next season.

"I'm surprised that he wants to do it," Frost said. "I played for Bill for two years, my first two years with the Jets. I was on the team when he was the head coach all of a sudden for about 48 hours and then left to go to the Patriots. So I haven't talked to him in a long time, but obviously he is the best coach in NFL history. I got a history with him too, going all the way back to 1998, 1999."

Although it's only been two years, a lot has changed in college football since the last time Frost was a head coach between the portal, NIL and upcoming player revenue share.

"They need to figure it out and they're trying to figure it out," Frost said. "I think if you talk to any college coach that's being honest, this isn't sustainable the way it is right now. It's just an interesting landscape. You gotta be on your toes and figuring it out and solving problems and making sure you got enough resources to get the kids what they want, to stay, to come. It's wild now.

"Being in the NFL, there was none of this. You just show up and coach ball. There's a lot more to that now. And going back to Coach Belichick, I hope somebody puts a camera in his office and they can show everybody what happens the first time a kid comes in and asks for more money. I'd love to see that video and see how he handles that."

Frost elaborated on the absurdity of the current setup.

"Picture the NFL, your good players on your roster and there's free agency twice a year and they don't have a contract that keeps them there," Frost said. "I mean, that's really what it's become. We're in an attractive place, which really helps us. I'm happy that kids are making this. I don't know how you feel, but back when we played, Danny (Kanell), shoot, I was lucky if I got a parking token to park in the garage on campus for free, so I didn't get a ticket. Now kids are able to be compensated for what they do and putting their bodies at risk.

"But it's just wild with the rules and regulations we have now. I mean, kids are crazy if they don't explore options to try to take care of themselves. But man, all it takes is one agent or school to call and one person can set the price. Then you get asked for prices that I don't know are real because people are elevated and escalating it to try to get more. It's kind of a fun process, but man, it's wild."

Is the transfer portal changing how coaches coach, always cognizant that being too "tough" or "hurting a player's feelings" may spur them to leave?

"I think that's probably real, to be honest," Frost said. "There's two ways to motivate kids. You motivate through inspiration or you motivate through intimidation. I'd rather have kids that do the right thing because it's the right thing to do rather than because they're gonna get yelled at by the head coach. That being said, we're gonna coach our guys hard. We're gonna be disciplined and make kids do the right thing. If you have kids that don't want to do that, then you're probably better off without them anyway.

"So, we're certainly gonna be good to kids and develop great relationships. I want this to be a big family where the players love the coaches and the coaches love the players. But we're gonna make them do the right things as well. The real guys, you know this, the real guys, they want to be pushed and held accountable."

***UCF AD Terry Mohajir outlines vision for Roth Tower, stadium upgrades (updated with quotes) ⚔️🏈

In 2026, in what will be the 20th season of UCF Football on campus, the Bounce House will see its most dramatic transformation yet with the debut of a brand new Roth Tower. The stadium structure will be more than double the size of the existing tower while adding a plethora of luxury amenities, giving UCF a true Power Four-caliber setup.

The project is a reality thanks to $90M in funding from Orange County's Tourist Development Tax.

Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, UCF AD Terry Mohajir talked about the historic day and what is yet to come.

Terry, so this has been a culmination of a lot of hard work over the last couple of years. What does it mean to actually have this project start and get some shovels in the ground and start working on it?

"Well, to your point, we have a lot of people that have been involved to get to this point. University leadership, we've had a lot, it was a great collaboration with the Athletic Department and University leadership. President Cartwright allowed us to go forward with pursuing these funds and this grant with the Tourism Development Council and we were able to get it with fierce competition.

"This is great because this is going to help level set our athletics program and the community, but also it's going to create a lot of tourism. We already are a huge player in Orlando for tourism and I think this is just going to enhance it even more."

So what can fans expect when this tower is finished?

"Well, you can see the flags. We put the flags up there on both sides. That's where the tower, from the north to south, will go to. So I think people are going to see definitely an overhaul in the whole look of this stadium. And I think fans are going to be able to enjoy premium products. I was just saying earlier that your biggest competition nowadays is your 80-inch and 70-inch screen TVs, so you have to provide really awesome premium products for people to experience college football live as opposed to being in their house because a lot of people don't want to deal with some of the travel and stuff.

"So we're doing that and I think year-round programming for this facility, it's just not seven home games a year. We're going to have lecture series. If you're a premium product person that owns a premium product in the stadium, you're going to be a part of a social membership that's going to allow for monthly programming as well. So I think that's going to be a little different than other people around the country.

"This is going to be one of the bigger event spaces in eastern Orlando. I believe that we're going to have a lot of people that will want to rent it, maybe for weddings, lecture series, all kinds of different things. So I think it's a really good opportunity for us."

What will next season look like in terms of the construction progress? I know you just pointed out the flags. The existing Rod Tower will remain intact during next season?

"Yeah, so I think by next season, we already started a little bit of the process. You see all the fencing outside. You're going to see this shell on both the north side and the south side of the tower. So obviously the main tower, Roth Tower, will still be in full use. After the 2025 season, Barton Malow, which is our construction partner, will repurpose the entire tower and will cantilever out to the west. So I think we'll be ready for the 2026 season."

Terry, having premium seating like this, do you expect this might help draw other sporting events during other times of the year?

"Yeah, we were going to host the bowl game, again, the Cure Bowl. We hosted that last year, but we weren't able to do it because they need full facilities for the tower. And we weren't able to do that this year. But we're also still hosting the Hula Bowl. And we'd like to explore a concert, maybe one or two a year. And we've hosted some derby functions and all kinds of stuff. So yeah, we want this to be programmed more than just seven times a year."

It's been an exciting past week. And this is just more adding on to it. What is the excitement level with fans right now?

"We're trying to keep top of mind, man. UCF, we want to keep in the news. That's what we're trying to do, keep top of mind. So it's exciting. I think any time that you can feel the momentum. I think people are really excited about our new coach. I think about some of the personnel that we're bringing back. And I think it just all works together. And keeping top of mind with good news, and obviously can't make everybody happy, but we believe we're in the right direction.

"And this is a crazy time in college athletics. I just got back from Big 12 meetings with all my AD colleagues. We're still learning about what's coming up in the new revshare era. And I think Scott Frost, Coach Frost, is also learning as he settles back in the chair, the head coaching chair. We're just trying to navigate through a lot of things right now."

u4thlmbbmhuv5xk0pifk

Terry, you mentioned that with the House Settlement and the revenue sharing, how much additional money do you guys feel like a project like this can maybe help in that situation?

"Well, that's why we chose this. Because of all the funding that we were trying to receive, the tower was the most important. Because this is probably the best piece of real estate we have in the athletic department. And it's going to help level set. We almost pay for the entire project with the grant money. So everything is additive. Every dollar that you make, the stadium still has a debt service. Every dollar you make on top of what you're already paying is additive to your budget."

How important was it to get a Power Four level facility? That was going to be very difficult to do without this TDT money.

"Yes, no doubt about it. And that was the pitch. It took about nine months to get this done. And we had a lot of people involved, as I mentioned, from the university and our athletic department was tremendous in pursuing. We were very creative and we were very determined and had a lot of conversations over a nine-month period.

"But we knew that if we could get a head start, because going out and raising the money I think would have been possible, but it's just harder because then you have to use most of that money to pay for the debt service. And now your budget is... Some of these athletic departments across the country, they're paying almost $18 million in debt service a year, and that just takes away from what you're trying to do to build.

"It's not a sprint, it's a marathon, so we've got to play the long game here. It's trying to reduce your debt and putting every dollar that you possibly can into the operating and personnel, and building new facilities to compete at a very high level is what this will do."

Terry, what about the Gateway Project? I know that's still kind of ongoing.

"This is the first phase of the Gateway Project. You'll see the field that's closest to the Roth building in Wayne Densch, we'll start putting a parking lot and we'll start building the promenade from Kenneth G. Dixon Way, it's not Orion anymore, it's Kenneth Dixon Way, all the way to the spine of the tower. You'll see some of that. We've still got a little ways to go on funding for the operations building, but this is a very planned and intentional way we started this, and this is the first way.

"Having the tower will help us with some fundraising will be essential."

What is your favorite design element of the new Roth Tower?

"I think every part of this, we have really been intentional about how our fans use the facility and what they like, and being indigenous to Florida and this region is really important. So I think the Sky Suites, we call them Sky Suites, they're like Topgolf-type bays. That's the open-air concept. Basically you're taking the field cabanas and putting them up there.

"I think the club space is going to be fantastic, and then we also have outdoor clubs. So on game day, it'll be completely used for the game experience, but on any given day, if you wanted to have five to seven events going on in there, you could do that because the way that we had this segmented, we were really intentional, and I think this is going to be just a fantastic opportunity for our community, and our premium seat holders."

Terry, have you been contacted by other schools and athletic departments about the idea of working with the community for tourism money to use to help in those kinds of situations?

"You know, this is my third school that I've done this at, and it gets a little bigger, and not only have I done it, we've done it in Boca Raton, we did it in Jonesboro, Arkansas, we did it here. So it's not one of the first questions I asked when I got to UCF, is there any type of, we call them hotel tax, you know, for tourism. Some schools, the states have helped build stadiums, but I don't recall anybody receiving this type of grant across the country.

"So we're very proud, and we're very excited, and a lot of the commissioners and Mayor Demings should be here today, and so we're very excited to shake their hand and tell them thank you again."

Will the 2017 National Champions signage remain in some form on the stadium?

"It'll be there. It'll be there somehow, some way, we'll get it there. It won't look exactly like that, but it'll definitely be there somewhere. You know what, we're going to do something a little different. We're going to make it a little smaller so we have room to have more. We can't make them that big every time. We don't want to just have one, right?"

Some UCF MBB? Conference season upcoming and where are we?

The latest NET Ranking, UCF rank 91st.

I am not sure any of you watched the game yesterday. We didn't look too good out there. I do not know the reason and it could be Final Exams or the opponent was just not too exciting.

Jaylin Sellers and Mikey Williams are still not back in the lineup yet. That makes me worried. Will we have a good year in Conference season and go to the NCAA Tournament?

Without Jaylin Sellers, that chance could drop significantly.

With only two OOC games left, one coming this Saturday playing Tulsa and one next week hosting Jacksonville. Are we ready for a big year?

From seeing the morale of the team, I am not so sure.

Yes, we lost to LSU in 3OT and we got blown out by Wisconsin. But we also managed to beat Texas A&M. And I am not sure which version will show up in Conference play and the SOS will be brutal.

But heck, let's get Jaylin Sellers back before conference play

The first game vs Jacksonville State just got easier.
