OT: Runway to Hope

Sorry everyone, but this organization touched me 12 years ago when a friend asked for my help.

Mark Nejame and his wife have an organization that has multiple events yearly for pediatric cancer.

I have helped my friend out for 10 years now with security for their big event. Here's a list of their auction items. Their spring event is tomorrow night at Rosen Shingle Creek. The survivors get to walk on a runway after being pampered and treated like celebrities.

OT: Any Plex users out there? Question about hardware / software

Hi All - there was an IPTV thread floating around for a while but this is kinda different so I figured I'd start a new thread.

Interested in downloading a bunch of older kids shows from when I was a kid for the baby, old sesame street that sort of thing and then hosting it on a plex server for my house and some friends. A friend was telling me about how cocomelon got his kid so overstimulated she started crying. It's inevitable that kids have to watch tv but modern media for kids just seems so sinister and laser focused on pushing them in to some freaky algorithm

What I have now:
  • old (2011) i5 imac I think is powerful enough to use as the server / processing
  • Netgear SXK80 router that should be robust enough to push whatever needs pushing
  • 250gbps up/down Fios internet
  • subscription to alldebrid

What I need:
  • 2x big hard drives (like 12tb each?) and some sort of enclosure?
  • software

What I'd like to be able to do:
  • send 4k and below content to tvs on my local network, as well as possibly send it to friends and family remotely?
  • send 720p-ish content to phones etc while travelling
  • have some sort of content filtering so kids can only watch kids stuff

questions i have:
  • is the imac good enough to use? it doesn't get updates so it's stuck on High Sierra. i also have a i7 SFF pc my IT department gave me i could use instead, but i like the imac's included monitor etc so it has a smaller footprint in my storage room. if windows / linux is appreciably easier to use for all this stuff i can just do that instead. i dont think it has a high speed usb port
  • what do i need to do to connect the hard drives to my imac? it has a 10gbps thunderbolt port which i assume i'd need to connect to some sort of multi drive dock? usb isn't fast enough is it? i'd love to have the computer do the heavy lifting to back up the HDDs for a DIY NAS thing vs. buying an expensive enclosure
  • do i basically just run the plex server on the 'server' (imac) and then download the client on everything else?
  • is there a way i can set up my network so i can manage downloads but they goto folders on the remote plex server? can i do this remotely?

appreciate any intel anyone can provide

Reminiscing: board takeover prank days

Who was around for those? I remember the take overs every once and awhile and always laugh to myself.

For those that missed it, we did it a few times in a row. We'd pick a rivals board and then just bombard it with UCF post... The reactions from other fans still gets me. For awhile people thought there was some rivals glitch that caused cross posting to happen. You'd go to their open forum and the whole page would be UCF post. "How do you think George O'Leary will do this year." "Will Godfrey have a break out season." etc.

Pretty funny. Although I think we got Brandon in some heat ...

Maybe someone with better memory than me can remember the boards we hit.

Spring 2025 Football Portal 🏈

Portal opens up in about a week and a half

Going to the open practice I think we still need a WR, younger RB and OL.

Based on depth at positions would be surprised if we lost a younger WR or two that aren’t gonna play, QB and possibly some DBs. Hopefully no one on the two deep we want to keep leaves.

Would love if we could bring in the local WR from Ohio State, EPL and get a Harris brothers reunion at LB.

Curious to know peoples thoughts on this.

OT: Started the Keto Diet anyone have thoughts/suggestions?

Started last Saturday. I have lost about 5lbs in about 5 days. I am a huge bread (carbs in general) guy but I am holding on strong so far. I am using Keto Strips to regulate. I am in ketosis per the strips.

I am and have been for a longtime working out 3-5 days a week. I am strong but as I get older it is getting really hard to shed the weight. There is muscle under the fat somewhere...:joy:

Here are my supplements:
  • The Vitamin Shoppe Omega 3 Fish Oil 1000mg
  • Magnesium - Natural Vitality Natural Calm Drink - 16 Oz. Lemon
  • Viva Naturals USDA Organic MCT Oil (32 fl oz)
  • Nature Made Potassium Gluconate 550mg
  • Best Creatine 300 g Fruit Punch
  • Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte Hydration Powder
  • Pure Hawaiian Spirulina - 1000mg tablets 180 count
Anyone else been doing Keto for some time? Kind of doing this in the dark and only with internet research. Which I have done a ton.

Don't need any naysayers responding to the Keto diet. I have a good understanding of the good vs bad of it.

[OT] Starlink for Internet

Just curious if anyone has Starlink for Internet, especially as the network has filled in. With AT&T jacking up the price on even crappy, old ADSL, it's not much more.

I understand the latency, but it's much better than old geosychronous satellites, and basically not much worse than 4G/5G wireless Internet. I have that at my new place in Huntsville (T-mobile 5G is working well, better than Verizon's), since the wired options are just as bad at my home mid-state.

Long story short, I live in a very beautiful, but hilly area -- which is blocking even 600 & 700MHz towers -- where most everyone has 3-40 acres (myself included). So there are only a few dozen of us, and it's not worth anyone running any cable, despite some of the rural initiatives here. I'd start my own service provider, but I'm not at my home throughout the week (at least not right now, that may change). There's a fiber trunk only 1.4 miles away, but it's the university, let alone DSL really doesn't run over a mile.

Again, AT&T isn't going to spend the money to upgrade any copper, much less lay fiber, for a couple dozen homes over many square miles. And yes, again, I've tried wireless Internet, it's just too hilly. But I'm not paying $80 for 10/1Mbps ADSL ... asychronous, any burst upload kills it. Otherwise, the 20ms latency is pretty good, and even fine for video conferencing.

Hence the inquiry about Starlink. It's probably worth it at this point, especially if I take on more remote work in the coming weeks.
