UCF Fast & Slow – GOL Bowl Edition

Love to see the old ball coach back at the game this weekend. From UCF’s standpoint it would have been a game GOL was proud of, 4 field goals, solid special teams play, defense that bent but didn’t break, countless short rushes and 3 & outs with field flipping, etc… LOL. I kid GOL, I was a huge GOL fan and what I was really thinking watching this game is that he must have been sick to his stomach with how awfully undisciplined GA Tech was. That coaching staff is all GOL coaching tree guys and their team was hard to watch how just gawd awful they played at times. Missing easy field goals, terrible punt protection, stupid penalties, missed opportunities, just head scratchingly bad play calls like that 4th and 10 pass behind the line of scrimmage or that 4 and 3 full back dive. Add on that the targeting call the guy is celebrating then getting thrown out. They appeared to have some players and for me coaching was their undoing yesterday.

UCF Fast
  • GA Tech Flag: Let me get this out of the way first, that GA Tech flag the cheer leaders were running around with on the side line ****s. I want that flag for UCF. It made our flag look like it’s bitch. If anyone from UCF is reading this I will personally donate the funds to buy a proper sized flag for UCF. That was an impressive flag.

  • Boomer: Man I really hoped with this type of last name this kid would be the truth and how can you argue with 4/4 on fgs. I cannot tell you the last time that happened for UCF but I have to assume it was years ago, maybe Wright? Either way dude looks like he is 13 yrs old and 100lbs soaking wet but he has donkey legs and that is all that matters. Good for him and great for us we have 3 more years with what looks to be a competent kicker for the first time in a while.

  • Mitch McCarthy: I will admit I had to look this name up but dude is a man. Like 6-5 Australian mo. Punts the shit out of the ball. Makes me wonder how the coaches looked at him in practice and started Osteen. When it comes to punters I just want someone that can mash it. It is more important to flip the field then it is to be accurate IMO. Just like Boomer above this dude is a freshman, looks like our kicking game is in good hands for years to come.

  • Punt Block: Basically, I could have just given all of the special teams a fast but they all deserved individual shout outs. I am NOT sure how blocked that punt, I heard it might have been Ware but Bullard scooping and scoring was huge. That play was probably the most pivotal play of the game. When I saw how the protection was set up and the fact it was late in the 2nd I started screaming for a the block. Always cool when it happens and you get what you want.

  • Running Game: JRP ran well outside of the one fumble. His speed is really his x factor. He accelerates as well as anyone on the team and that has to be hard for defenses to plan for. I thought Bowser ran better tonight, he seemed like he had more speed then normal. His best play though was jumping on that fumble from JRP. That was a huge play. Liked to see Harvey getting some action. Oline blocked well and was pretty penalty free. We ran for over 280 yards against an ACC team. Really solid effort all around.

  • JJB: Really missed him last week at FAU in that first half. He is no question the leader on this defense. He was constantly around the ball and I think our most important defensive player. Great to have him back at it.

  • Brash: He is our best pass rusher and he was getting a lot of pressures last night. I know he fumbled that run back but I will get to that later. I really don’t put that on him.

  • Space X Launch: I stayed with the family for the Space X launch and UCF really leaned into it well with the Rocket Man song. A lot of people stayed to watch and it was one of those really cool moments where we all just experienced a solid win together and then could watch something that brings us all together on a whole different level. Really cool moment to experience.
UCF Slow:

  • Drops: I have been on this each of the first few games. I realize JRP is struggling to throw the ball but the good throws he makes these skill guys got to catch. We had three pretty awful drops tonight, Baker on what would have likely been a first down and then ROK and Hudson on potential game changing plays, Hudson for sure would have been a TD and ROK probably would have been. Those two drops took two TDs and probably close to 80-100 yards off of our passing game. Those are the big plays we need to convert. Both were really well thrown balls, especially the Hudson drop. That was a dime. We got to help JRP more then we are.

  • Passing Game: The drops above continue to be an issue but even with that factored in the passing game obviously was putrid. As many drops that occurred JRP missed on some big ones. Should have had Richardson on that wheel route and threw it out of bounds, should have had Richardson again on that roll out that would have been a TD and missed him. JRP through that awful pick and missed another one earlier in the game to his left that would or could have been a TD but he threw right. JRP has the arm for this, it is his decision making he needs to work on. If the guys are not obviously open on read 1 or 2 he really struggles. Against better teams that is not going to be the case. The good thing is he can run for 100 yards and overcome some of that but he needs to do better then this if we are going to compete in conference.

  • Divaad: I like him as a player and how physical he is but his ball skills and cover skills on the back end leave a lot to be desired but why he lands on this list is on the TMB fumble run back. The dude on tech makes a Don Beebe like never quit chase down and TMB is a big defensive end so of course he is going to gas out but what is unforgivable is that he has an escort of UCF players walking him into the end zone celebrating and not turning their heads to take this Tech guy out. Divaad is much faster then TMB, he was on his right side, all he had to do was look and could have just got in the guys way and that is a TD. That was a terrible play on this part.

  • Reviews: The targeting review on Wilson I thought was awful. If they review a play like that they can basically review anything. Also the review to see if the guys knee was down when he caught the throw back on Tech was awful. I saw his knee down from 50 yards away, no question. This just adds unnecessary time to these games.
  • Connectivity in Stadium: I will continue to bitch about this until they fix it. Back in prior seasons I used to be able to turn on my LTE or whatever on my cell phone and I could still use data but I guess Apple to that ability away and now it is lights out in the game. I cant text anyone, I cant get score updates, I cannot see the UCF news, it is awful. I get a lot of big stadiums deal with this issue, I had similar problems in Buffalo on Monday night but is there really nothing we can do about that? If it happens in the NFL I assume it can happen anywhere but it just seems so backwards that we don’t have the tech to fix that especially when I found a way around it for years until apple stopped letting me do it. If anyone knows how to turn off the 5g or whatever and just use LTE on an iphone please help a brother out.

  • Dungeon Posters That Don’t Read my Full Post: I noticed in the comments the last few weeks how some of you are posting additional fast and slows that are literally the same ones I am posting in my write up. It is like you reading everything above and then adding Boomer to the fast list. He is already there, LOL. Its all good, just funny how that goes.
All in all it was a great day. That morning my youngest played his first football game and housed a game sealing TD run from about 50 yards out which was a proud poppa moment and then the tailgating weather was incredible. Followed by a solid 3 score win over an ACC team in front of a decent crowd and then the incredible rocket launch. Days like yesterday are really what all of this is about. This is why we do what we do to enjoy days like that. Now we all just need to figure out how to string a thousand of them together just like yesterday. Go Knights!!!
st like yesterday. Go Knights!!!

***Gus Malzahn Press Conference - SMU Week ⚔️🐎🏈

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn recaps the win against Georgia Tech and looks ahead to this week's home game vs. SMU. The Mustangs have a first-year head coach in Rhett Lashlee, who has longstanding ties to Malzahn dating back to when Lashlee was a high school quarterback in Springdale, Arkansas.

Opening statement:

"Have SMU coming to town. Last year they got after us really good. It was an extremely tough loss. They've got a lot of their guys coming back. This staff, I know very well. They know us really well too. Ought to be a good game. One that we're looking forward to."

When you look at the film from Georgia Tech, what stands out in regards to offensive deficiencies? You won the game, you ran for a lot of yards but there were some points left on the table not scoring touchdowns.

"There were quite a few point possibilities left on the table. That was the most frustrating thing. There were seven specific plays that I think we could have gotten some points on that we didn't. That was the frustrating thing. When that happens, we've got to coach these guys better. That's the way I look at it. Yeah, the good thing was is we rushed for 285 yards. That was really good. They were a real aggressive defense. One of the best in the country in TFLs and takeaways and all that. That was the good part. Leaving the points, that was pretty tough. Here's the great thing about it: It's all correctable. I know we're just a little bit away from clicking pretty good. That's the positive part."

You mentioned the 285 rushing yards. Do you want to see more in the passing game?

"Like we talked about at the first of the season and every game, we're at our best when we're balanced. We've had two games where we're extremely balanced and won two games. For us to be our best, we need to be balanced in the running game and passing game. The good thing is one thing has been consistent and we've been able to run the football. In college football, that's very important."

What's the key to finding that balance?

"Hitting the plays when they're available. It all works together. The passing game, everybody, oh the quarterback and all this, but we've had 14 or 15 drops to be fair. We've got to do a better job around him. We're working hard to do that."

With the storm coming close to Florida, what have been the internal discussions about whether this game can be played this weekend?

"We're taking it day by day. We're going about our business like we're going to play the game and everything that goes with it. As we got more updates, we'll be able to make the best decision."

Considering travel for SMU, when does a decision have to be made?

"That's a great question. Like I said, we're going to take it day by day. As of right now, we're expecting to play."

Drops have been a significant issue as you said. We asked Chip last night and he said it doesn't happen in practice, only in games. Can you explain why you think that's been happening?

"I don't know. Like I said, we've got to coach them better. We have to do a better job of catching the football when we have an opportunity to do that."

After four games, how would you evaluate your team with conference play coming up?

"Right before conference play you kind of catch your breath. We're 3-1. Obviously the one loss was a game that we had an opportunity to win. I really think we're getting better as a team. I know we're getting better as a team. Our special teams is starting to come on. Our kickers in certain situations is starting to become solidified. Our return game, we're very close. I think we're in a good spot entering conference play."

SMU has a lot of returners including quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Is this the biggest offensive challenge you've faced this year?

"There's a good chance that is the case. That quarterback was phenomenal last year. Rhett has done a great job with him. They've got one of the better receivers in all of college football. Statistically, they've got one of the best passing offenses in college football. A lot of those guys back. It'll be a good challenge for our defense."

What stood out about R.J. Harvey's running ability last Saturday?

"He bounced one of the zones. He had the explosiveness to him, you can tell that. He's a guy that will get more and more opportunities each game. I think that was a really good breath of fresh air that came in and gave us a little spark when he did."

Now that John Rhys has had four games as the starting quarterback, what areas would you like to see him improve?

"His overall command of the offense and situational awareness and things like that. That's really the big thing."

When you look at the film, what trends are you noticing with your red zone defense? You've managed to keep teams out of the end zone.

"In the past, we prided ourselves on being effective in the red zone. You're exactly right. That's probably been one of the bigger frustrating things. I think it's a combination of things. I've had a couple poor play calls. There's no doubt about that. We've had poor executing things with that. That's when you win and lose games. We've got to do a better job moving forward. That's something we're addressing on a daily basis."

I actually was asking about your red zone defense.

"You know what I've got my mind on . Red zone defense, we've been really good. We expect to continue that. Coach Williams and the defensive players, they've taken great pride in stepping up. I think we're one of the best statistically in the country in red zone defense. We need to do the same thing on the offensive side."

What about SMU's defense that gets your attention?

"A lot of those guys are back too. They got after us pretty good. Their defensive front, they've got a couple guys that are very explosive. They've got some guys on the edge that can get after the quarterback. Their defensive scheme, it's a little bit unique from a lot of other defenses. They do a good job with it."

With this being the first game of the conference schedule, it's the last year of the AAC, like a farewell season. Do things feel different now that it's finally conference play when you have those high goals for the team this season?

"We have a lot of respect for SMU. We're just focused on them. It's our first conference game. We're at home. Last year they got after us pretty good. They got most of their guys back. We need to play good football. That's the only thing on our mind. We're not thinking about anything other than that."

Rhett Lashlee was your quarterback at Shiloa Christian in the mid to late 1990s? What do you remember about a young Rhett Lashlee?

"First of all, Rhett was a really, really good player. Really good leader. Really good competitor. He helped me coach at Springdale High School. He was with me my first year coaching college at Arkansas. He was my GA in 2010 when we won the National Championship with Cam (at Auburn). He was my OC at Arkansas State and at Auburn when we went to the National Championship Game.

"We know each other real well. He's one of the smarter coaches I've ever been around and have been able to work with. He's very good with players. I can't say enough good things about him. He's probably one of the best offensive minds in all of college football."

How was he as a quarterback in high school?

"He was really talented. He set some national passing records back in the day. Ended up hurting his shoulder. He played for the Razorbacks. If he hadn't hurt his shoulder, I think he would have played a lot more."

With the hurricane looming, is there a plan in place for the team?

"Terry and the administration is working hard on that. They've been working on it a couple days, all the what ifs and all that. From my standpoint and preparing your team, I addressed our team, 'Hey, we're moving forward like a normal week.' Obviously we'll keep you updated if things change. We'll adjust. It's looking like we're going to play the game. That's our mindset. Terry and his staff is working behind the scenes really hard."

For Colton Boomer to come in and kick four field goals, a big reason why you won the game. For a freshman, talk about his moxie.

"He's really performed very well the last two games. He's got that confidence, that air about him. He came in and made some huge kicks. The week before too. I think our kicking game is in good hands right now."

It's been reported Geoff Collins has been fired at Georgia Tech. What's your reaction to that?

"First of all, I hate it for him. He's a good football coach. I wish him nothing but the best. Me and Geoff went against each other numerous times when he was in the SEC at different places. Mississippi State, Florida and all that. I wish him nothing but the best."

How would you evaluate the offensive line after four games?

"I think I've said it every week. They're a bunch that's growing. Got two new tackles. Got a starting tackle who moved to guard. I think the bunch has a chance to be a really good offensive line before it's all said and done. They've done some good things each game. It's just we've got to correct the little things. It's a combination. I talked about the drops and the misses with certain throws. It's a combination of protecting too. It's all of the above. That group has a chance to be really good I feel like."

Football, basketball, and baseball under Terry

So everyone wants to point to Terry hiring Harsin, Malzahn, and Blake Anderson as some sort of great achievement at Arkansas State. But let’s dig in a little bit to Terry’s last hiring at Arky State and some other programs.

Butch Jones- he’s been an utter failure at Arkansas State. He’s run the program into the ground and is probably going to get fired soon. The red wolves have went from top 4 in sunbelt to bring lapped by even JMU and ODU. Terry hired him.

mike Balado-basketball. Disaster of a hire. 3 winning seasons in 6 years. Can’t recruit or coach. Terry managed to scare Grant McCasland into going to Texas than staying in Jonesboro.

Baseball- hired before Terry, but should have been fired. 3 winning seasons in 13 years.

Terry is an utter failure of an AD and should have never been hired. He’s run programs into the ground and his hirings have been awful. We can’t trust him in big 12.

***UCF PFF Offense Player Grades - 27-10 win vs. Georgia Tech ⚔🏈

Rivals has continued its partnership with Pro Football Focus (PFF) which grants me access to their comprehensive analytics and statistical tools.

After each game, two separate analysts grade every player on each play of the game and the two totals are averaged out. Obviously no subjective ranking system is perfect, but I am finding that my real world impressions of a player in a certain game usually reflects the PFF grade.

PFF Grading Scale

90 and above - Elite
80 to 89 - Great
70 to 79 - Good
60 to 69 - Average to Above Average
50 - 59 - Below Average
49 and below - Poor

Team Offensive Grade (by game)

South Carolina State - 78.6
Louisville - 64.9
FAU - 73.5
Georgia Tech - 54.5

PFF data goes back to the 2013 season. The 54.5 cumulative offensive score is the lowest grade for a UCF offense since 2016. The only other times UCF won a game with a score in the 50s was 2016 vs. Cincinnati and 2014 at Houston. Every other 50s score was a loss.

Overall Offensive Player Grades (Snaps Played)

RB Isaiah Bowser (44) -74.3
RB R.J. Harvey (16) - 65.6
C Matt Lee (79) - 64.0
RT Ryan Swoboda (79) - 61.7
RB Johnny Richardson (21) - 60.6
TE Kemore Gamble (26) - 60.1
LG Samuel Jackson (79) - 59.9
RB Trillion Coles (3) - 59.8
WR Cullen Smith (5) - 58.4
LT Tylan Grable (79) - 58.4
WR Xavier Townsend (10) - 57.5
WR Stephen Martin (4) - 56.8
QB John Rhys Plumlee (79) - 55.1
TE Alec Holler (53) - 54.2
WR Javon Baker (66) - 54.1
RG Lokahi Pauole (79) - 53.8
TE Zach Marsh-Wojan (20) - 49.3
WR Kobe Hudson (66) - 46.0
WR Ryan O'Keefe (61) - 44.4

When wide receivers aren't getting the ball and when they are targeted they have drops, that leads to poor overall grades as is the case with Kobe and ROK. Only six out of 19 players had better than average grades (60+).

Offensive Line Grades

Pass Blocking:

RG Lokahi Pauole (79) - 86.2
C Matt Lee (79) - 83.2
LG Samuel Jackson (79) - 68.7
LT Tylan Grable (79) - 67.4
RT Ryan Swoboda (79) - 66.6

Grable and Swoboda gave up two pressures, which why they graded lowest. Generally speaking, these are excellent pass blocking grades though.

Run Blocking:

LG Samuel Jackson (79) - 61.5
LT Tylan Grable (79) - 59.8
C Matt Lee (79) - 59.7
RT Ryan Swoboda (79) -59.1
RG Lokahi Pauole (79) - 49.2

Most of these grades are about average (60 range).

Quarterback Grades

John Rhys Plumlee - 57.7 passing grade

Passing Pressure Grades for John Rhys Plumlee:

Kept Clean - 55.6
Under Pressure - 40.7
Not Blitzed - 58.4
When Blitzed - 38.7

A closer look at passing depth for John Rhys Plumlee:

Deep (20+): 0 of 3 for 0 yards, 1 INT - 59.2
Medium (10-19): 1 of 3 for 22 yards - 57.8
Short (0-9): 2 of 3 for 18 yards - 65.9
Behind LOS: 4 of 5 for 11 yards - 58.8

Rushing Grades

Isaiah Bowser - 70.2
R.J. Harvey - 65.1
Ryan O'Keefe - 63.2
Johnny Richardson - 61.0
John Rhys Plumlee - 53.4

Plumlee had the fumble which impacts this score.

Wide Receiver Grades

Isaiah Bowser - 88.2
Kemore Gamble - 60.5
Johnny Richardson - 58.6
Javon Baker - 52.2
Kobe Hudson - 46.8
Ryan O'Keefe - 41.5

Baker, Hudson and ROK were attributed with one drop each.

I know Gus won't

Mikey Keene is not the runner he wants. JRP is clearly not the passer he wants. TC has elements of both. I know Gus is going to be loyal to the guy he brought in. But JRP is just not a passer. He is a great change of pace QB you can put in a couple of drives a game and the defense still has to play you somewhat honest. But on the last drive he could have run for the first down if he ran to his left (his god given ability), he could have checked down over the middle for what looked to me would have been good for a first down. but he went with the lower percentage pass. QB has to keep the chains moving, with his legs or his arm or his mind (audible, or feel for the moment-KZ). Also, is Ryan O'keefe okay? What is the status of his injury? He must be injured right? How did he not get his name called once in the second half? WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had this game. The holding call on Swoboda was BS. I don't have replay on my TV, but as an OL I didn't see holding. The guy he was blocking slid right off his block unimpeded. Or at least it looked that way to me. So many defensive players slid right off his block the whole night, why not call holding on those plays as well.

To me a couple of things stood out tonight: 1. Our OL is crap. They can't block anybody. Go back to the SC State game, there were guys getting heat on JRP in that game. How can we compete with top 60 schools when we can't dominate on the OL against SC State, let alone Louisville or teams better than them. 2. Our D is really good, but will be wasted by an offense that will still struggle to score more than 20 points against a quality opponent. 3. JRP is an exceptional athlete, but at best an average QB- which means throwing the ball. Mikey Keane is probably the better passer between the two. I didn't see a deep ball that was close tonight other than the BS holding call. Every pass over 20 yards was way off target (maybe there was one or two on target, honestly I don't remember every throw right now, I am just pissed). But Mikey Keene isn't athletic enough to get the job done the way Gus needs it to get done. 4. Maybe give TC some looks. He is a gifted runner, not quite as good as JRP, but way better than Keene. IMO he is a better passer than JRP. I say that (here come the neigh sayers) after watching some film of him. He throws the ball on time and doesnt wait for the guy to be open. Honestly, if you put TC in and he has the kind of night JRP just had, maybe he can build off that, he has 4 years ahead of him. He is a threat with his arm and his legs. Right now, I feel JRP is a threat with his legs not his arm. Every team we play is going to send more than we can block on obvious passing downs because they know that if he has to do it 4 times on drive, he is going to miss on at least half of them. Which pisses me off even more because I really like JRP. If it was between him and Keene, I wanted him to win. I like both of them. But IMHO, TC probably gives us a better chance to win going forward. There will be times he makes a bust on a read, but it will pay off next year when it really matters, and every year after that with the possibility of an expanded college football playoff. Point #4 was really long. I will stand back now and let the rest of my UCF brothers pick me apart.

@statsowar Expectation vs. Reality Graph

Very basic calculation using consensus spread vs actual point differential. Doesn't include FCS games so sample size is small (3 games)

I was surprised to see UCF with the highest expectations, but not very surprised to see UCF about meeting or slightly exceeding them since we've been close to the spread every game.

Outstanding game for Drop. Koby Perry appears to have seen increased game action, probably due to Dyllon Lester's injury. Mostly pedestrian grades for the secondary, outside of Koby Perry and Divaad Wilson. T-Will leans heavily on JJB and Jason Johnson at LB. DT Matthew Alexander has quietly played well and earning more PT .
