He should come out publicly and say:

1. As AD there has been zero interest and zero communication from any P5 conference in UCF joining their conference in the near term. Never has, not sure if there ever will be in the near future. We are with the AAC and our focus should be to continue winning this conference. This will calm the critics who think the current status of the program is being destroyed because in reality there was really no chance to begin with. If that is not the case, then we have a bigger issue.

2. Reaffirm your commitment to this school and team. Take some accountability publicly. It is under his watch, no matter the circumstances that got us here to now in this current state, that this team is thin and has no senior leadership. It is his assistant coaches, if they won't help lead and develop these young guys, then GOL needs to step up and reaffirm his leadership and make the necessary changes. Sometimes tough love is not always the answer. Real genuine love will reignite the spirit of the team knowing their HC truly has their back.

3. Admit that Key has a bigger role than what is being led on and that as HC he will re-engage to ensure that the wheels don't further fall off. As AD, he will readdress the coach in waiting situation after season's end and make the best decision for the future of UCF and not one of his guys.

That's a start.
