North Korea suspends nuclear and missile testing

We shall see, but we gave up a lot of concessions for no verifiable assurances. Should've at least pressed for a goodwill assurance like letting IAEA inspectors look at sites in exchange for halting exercises. They've stopped enriching, and collapsed entrances to some facilities, but that doesn't mean they're not moving stuff out in tunnels.

Halting exercises is no big deal. U can restart them in a matter of weeks to a few months. That is a little carrot for the rocket boy, to keep him going forward. If anyone expected anything big at this point, they are crazy. It is step one (a big step)
in a process that will play out over a couple of years.
I was a reluctant Trump voter, But am totally surprised how good he has been. Economy booming again, N Korea talks going forward, ISIS all but destroyed. Obama care mandate gone. Most of Obama's regs reversed.
conservative judge appointments.

Call me out all you want - TDS me all you want - but I personally and don't know how others don't have problems with this line:

The North Korean dictator has a "great personality" and is "a very talented man," the president told reporters overnight.

The president of the USA just called a horrible dictator who kills his people a very talented man.

Good for him if he can get something done, which I'm not exactly sold on but hearing that from a President just kinda gives me chills.

I remember when Trudeau got heat for saying something positive about Castro.

Its obvious that he's saying that to gain favor with Kim for the point of getting what he wants.

we are trying to bring peace to the region. of course we are going to say nice things. this is just like what coaches say before and after games. remember the negotiations are on going, they arent over. and no one is pretending those bad things the un family has done to that nation.

i think there is a slight difference in trump saying some nice things about a really bad dictator to help bring him to the negotiation tables to denuclearize and end decades long hostilities vs a guy that had literal family connections to a terrible dictator.

i mean trump had never meet un until now vs trudeau's dad was actually friends with castro. could you maybe see how there is a difference?

Part of me wonders if Kim may actually be trying to change things, that he would like to be remembered as the korean leader who makes things better for the people there.

I'm pretty skeptical, but there is that bit of curiosity.

ive had the same thought. i wonder if the collapse of the tunnels made him move along with that plan faster

Calling him Rocket man on twitter wasn't exactly nice.

Trump has, at best, an 8th-grade vocabulary. Before the TNC starts whining, that doesn't mean he's not smart. It means he has difficulty expressing himself and he has a limited word set that he can use comfortably. Whatevs.

I think it’s more he doesn’t know when to stfu . Just because you think skbrthlnv doesn’t mean you have to make it public

that was also before they ever got to the negotiating table and you know it. who knows, maybe calling the little brat on the playground that talks a lot of sh't was a good way to get them to the table in the first place. we probably wont know what got them to this point, but one thing is certain, they are talking and thats a big step none of the previous presidents will ever be able to claim.

Yes, wayne. And I'm a bit dubious that "calling him a little brat" brought him to his knees.

no but a reminder of his actual place in the world when comparing military might could have. lets be real, a war with north korea would be measured in minutes, maybe hours.

You folks that don't get "Rocket Man" just don't speak Trump's language or get his inception ability. All terms of endearment, wonderful marketing and self fulfilling prophecy, "Crooked Hillary" "fake news" "Pocahontas" "Low Energy Jeb" - he knows exactly what he's doing. Yet again here with the Rocket Man it worked though none of us understood at the time.

It would also be measured in millions dead on boths sides. But yes I'm sure calling their god/emperor middle school insults on twitter really saved the day.

Yeah, with South Korea right in the way to absorb some brutal shit. Not exactly the recipe for a pleasant situation.

That is the farthest thing from the truth. They would overrun the South in less than a week.

lol. you realize they use inflatable weapons in their marches right to make it seem like they have more capability than they really do right?

I had mixed feelings going into this, but if IAEA inspections and verifiable proof that they are actually working on denuclearization of the peninsula do not come in the future, then we got almost nothing out of this and Kim Kong Un got everything.

He got the US to end military training exercise with South Korea, a major talking point for him back home and he got a massive photo op as an equal to an American President. These photos will likely be used for decades to come in North Korean propaganda and it firmly solidifies his rule in NK and likely squashes any chance someone would attempt to overthrow him from within.

I guess the threat of nuclear holocaust was lessened to a certain degree, so that’s something, but without independent inspections, we don’t get a lot out of this.

Thats assuming that we dont get involved. The only damage they would do would be with their munitions, which would be substantial but wouldn't accomplish much as far as overrunning the south goes.

They have both biological and chemical weapons, to go along with their nukes. They are a stones throw from Seoul. North Korea would lose in a war, but not before wreaking massive loss to South Korea and creating a massive humanitarian crisis.

Like any deal time will tell how it ends up . At this point it at least appears to be a positive step towards improvement in the region
exactly. i still dont trust nk, but weve gotten further than at any other time in the past. i am hopeful.

It's a start...just like USA had to do first with the Soviets and then the Russians...which had been on-going since the end of World War II.

Keep communication open like this (with Sec of State too), and hopefully this will have a positive outcome for all (included North Korean Civilians who don't get a say or much of a life).

But the North could still destroy Seoul, home to 20 plus Million people...so there will be a lot of other losers if USA tried to take down the entire North Korean Military Complex.

Stop talking about things if you have absolutely no idea how they work. Here is a current list of things you know absolutely nothing about, and are banned from speaking of on this board:

1) The military readiness of North Korea
2) Climate change and the effect CO2 and other green house gasses have on our long term environment
3) Absolutely anything to do with gender

They have one of the world's largest stockpiles of chemical weapons and the largest standing army in the world. Seoul would fall in hours.

I'm confused as to what the argument is here. Everybody recognizes that Nork has a large army and a lot of munitions but its also antiquated and poorly funded. South korea has a superior, but smaller military and far more allies. The Norks could devastate Seoul but that's as far as it would go because they would have both us to deal with from the south and china from the north.

If they're goal is to kill 5-10 million citizens and then be obliterated then they would definitely succeed.

Wayne said the war would be over with in minutes. It took us decades to "win" vs Iraq. The stupidity, it burns.

It would probably only last as long as the Norks have initiative, so probably 3 days, maybe 4? I think what wayne is talking about is our aerial superiority and firepower. Their 1950s air force wouldn't last long going up against south Korea's modern AF, let alone ours. The norks have a lot of ww2 era weapons, but little in the way of modern technology.

Another thing to consider is whether the north korean people are as ideologically motivated as the Iraqi's.

Guess we can add you to the list of people who know absolutely nothing about the Nork's military. Unless you think Fulcrums are ww2 era.

Playing devil’s advocate here, we did topple the in-place Iraq government within days. The people we’ve been fighting since were largely insurgents funded by and originating from other countries.

This is likely true if N. Korea launched an offensive with no preparation in the South and without any US forces staged. And if you define fall as being occupied by N Korean troops.

OTOH, if we were staged and had carrier group support in the region, Seoul would suffer huge damage but I think N. Korea would be repelled prior to crossing the river.

I’d be very interested to see what would happen to that “largest standing army” when they met resistance that was far better equipped and trained than they had been led to believe. How many of them would break upon finding that they were not simply going to roll over the weak imperialists and their puppets.

The chemical weapons, if employed, Would cause huge losses in civilian lives. The combined forces are prepared though, especially if they know an attack is coming, to fight and win in dirty conditions.

No one is arguing North Korea would win a war. But hundreds of thousands to millions of people would die. The land where biological, chemical, or nuclear weapons were used would become uninhabitable. And it would result in the worlds largest refugee crisis where hundreds of thousands to millions of malnourished, brain washed North Koreans would go streaming into China and all of Asia.

Pure and utter chaos.

sure, and the guerrilla warfare from the Nork's would make Iraq look like a walk in the park, with how brainwashed they are. Regardless the statement that the war would be over in minutes is completely moronic.

Ok. So they have a couple dozen 1970s era fighter jets. Are you suggesting that this is a problem for our F22 and F35s?

They have a shit ton of IADS and the closest F-22s are in Alaska.
That’s true, but they are largely former Soviet Union systems with some Chinese radars built in. We’ve been exploiting the majority of these systems for years. There’s enough assets in PACOM and USFK, not to mention carrier support, to claim air superiority over the peninsula fairly quickly.
