Public Hearings on January 6th

It was a coup attempt. I think that has been obvious for a while, but getting to hear even more now makes it pretty clear. Cheney said 9 congressman reached out to Trump for pardons, and I am interested to see who these people are and why they needed a pardon.
absolutely. Just unimaginable in 2020 United States

Growing up in the 80's and 90's I used to wonder how in the world a country like Nazi Germany happened. Now I no longer wonder.
I hear ya, Ninja. I grew up learning about WWII and wondered the same thing. Not any more.

I believe one of the key steps that led us down the road to where we are now was the FCC's abolishment of the fairness doctrine back in the 80s. The idea behind it was to...get this, present differing perspectives on controversial issues!!! Yikes, how crazy was that??!?

Now people can go online and watch cable TV and have their viewpoints spoon-fed to them while blissfully ignoring any troubling facts that might get in the way. That's the only way you can logically explain why the hell our nation isn't 100% on board with getting answers to the threat to our nation's democracy that took place after the 2020 elections that ended with the January 6th attack on our Capitol.

You'd think that every red-blooded America who loves our country would want us to learn from it so we can insure that it NEVER happens again.

When was the last time you listened to or watched a blatantly right wing source with an open mind?

Good thought... If you conceal your own political affiliation, then share this statement with both sides of the political spectrum:

"Now people can go online and watch cable TV and have their viewpoints spoon-fed to them while blissfully ignoring any troubling facts that might get in the way."

You'll get agreements from both sides.

There is so much distrust from media sources, people blindly follow their own "team" of skewed news reports... Goes both ways, I read multiple sources knowing the political leanings - and it's pretty predictable what topics will be emphasized

You're making the sweeping assumption that there are not information consumers out there who get their news from a variety of sources.

I've always found it interesting to hear what others have to say. I've done this for most of my adult life. (And full disclosure, I used to be a Republican.) But to be honest, it's grown harder and harder over the past couple decades to stomach the BS propaganda being spewed by the Right-wing media. Once upon a time, right-wing radio could be entertaining back in the early days of Rush Limbaugh. But nowadays, these Rush wanna-bes take themselves WAY too seriously and all spout the same nonsense from the same playbook.

The American judicial system has a process where evidence is gathered and shared by the prosecutor with the defense. The defense has rights under the law and one of those rights is to actually mount a defense and face the accusers and question them.

This is political theater . We call it a hearing but there is no defense, no lawyers representing the accused and not a single cross examination of the evidence and witnesses by the defense.

The other thing is I looked up the federal statue regarding sedition and insurrection. Not a single soul who participated in the capitol breach has yet to be charged with either under federal law. Not one lick of evidence by a single prosecutor has been presented to either a grand jury , a judge or a defense attorney of such charges. To call this an insurrection is a farce until somebody ,anybody is officially charged with it.

So, from the opening we have this hearing with no defense, no depositions from the defense side, no defense cross examination . Nothing . If you ask me this is Soviet style political drama . It's not remotely American or fair . It's not how we operate here . It's good political theater and that's it.

Last thing ...on January 4th Donald Trump signed an order authorizing 20,000 National Guard Troops to be present on January 6. The mayor of DC flat out refused . Nancy Pelosie ignored it and did nothing.. The House Sgt of Arms did nothing. Yet , nobody called the Mayor of DC, Nancy Pelosie or the Sgt of Arms to testify for their actions or in actions as it were . The DOD secretary of Defense and his Chief staff both testified to the same and have submitted both the memo authorized by Trump and their own testimony under oath as to the sane. If this committee was remotely honest and remotely wanted the truth they would have supoena the speaker of the house ,the Sgt of Arms and the mayor of DC to ask why ?

They didn't and that should tell us all what we need to know about these people.

Follow up. I listen to Megyn Kelly on XM 111 when I am doing deliveries and such for work. A few weeks back she had Bill Barr on and they talked about the election. Barr thought from a legal perspective to fight the election and prove fraud that Trump didn't have the time before the December 18 deadline . Proving fraud and doing a forensic review of voting machines and video takes a long time to do to prove illegal activity had actually taken place . It's a high bar to achieve and he told Trump he didn't have time to collect evidence, review it and take the evidence to a prosecutor . Barr said our system doesn't allow for this to happen if fraud happens on a mass scale. I am paraphrasing here .

It was a fascinating interview and he did suggest fraud might have happened but proving it would take a bunch of money and time. I don't know if any of you listen to her radio show ,but sometimes she has some really interesting guests on . It's on XM 111 and is from noon to 2. I realized Bill Barr is a stand up guy and he advised Trump from a legal perspective and not so much a political one.

What is there to defend against? The perpetrators are being tried in the criminal system. There are no “sides” to investigating the origins of the insurrection. Americans want to know what happened and want measures put in place to prevent it happening again.

This isn't a damn trial, it's a fact-finding mission to find out exactly what happened on January 6th so we can make sure it never happens again

If the issue was really about 'fairness' and avoidance of a 'soviet-style poltical theatre,' tell me why did the House Republican leadership REFUSE the opportunity they were given to participate in a bipartisan select committee that was 50/50 Democrat/Republican across the board? Who does that? Wouldn't that have been the best way by far to explore what the hell happened?

But they didn't. To use one of your lines, that should tell you all that we need to know about these people. :)

If we didn't know better, you might think they refused to participate so they could turn around and blast the committee's inevitable findings to their base as "nothing to see here," because.....ta-da!....it's all political theatre which you've swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

Lets at least put the whole story in here, The Republicans had 5 people they wanted to put on the committee.
2 would have be voices from the other side of the issue, Pelosi turned them down, after that the Republicans refused to be part of it.
Republicans pick 5 for Jan 6 committee.
Under normal circumstances both parties pick their own member to be on any committee. Pelosi wasn't having any part of that. The purpose of this committee is to do more damage to Trump, plain and simple. If it did enough that he wouldn't run again (I don't think it will.)
I would be happy, if it did, as I don't want him to run. I am ok with looking for a conspiracy theory on what happened on the 6th, but part of that absolutely should be on how Washington handled the problem. Why when reports were there that some groups were planning to stir things up, did they not beef up security ahead of the rally, (LIKE NORMAL) when threats were known, and why was national guard not brought in ahead of the rally when Trump already had signed off on it.

Those who were involved in the protest should be charged, and if possible convicted. Those who neglected to do their duty should also be exposed. and make damn good sure it never happens again. If proper security was there the Capitol would not have been overrun to begin with.

The success of the investigation did not hinge on having Jim Jordan as part of the investigatory body. He was rejected because he was actively attempting to get the election overturned on 1/6. If that is the other “side” that you think we needed, I’ll respectfully disagree. There are no “sides” to this other that people who were attempting to subvert democracy on that day and people who weren’t. And no, they don’t each need a seat at the table.

“Independent” or “libertarian” are chud code words for “this is why I think my opinion matters more than yours”. Real independents and libertarians do exist. They just aren’t constantly telling people how much better and “neutral” their viewpoints are.

Ooooooh, so you're gonna tell us THE WHOLE STORY, huh?
Under normal circumstances both parties pick their own member to be on any committee. Pelosi wasn't having any part of that.
Aaaah, I see, this was a 'partisan witchhunt' from the start, right?

First off, this story occurred AFTER McCarthy had already turned down the opportunity for a joint, bipartisan committee. After that, Pelosi naturally went ahead and put together her own committee that included Republican, Liz Cheney, (for one of her Democrat slots) and invited McCarthy to add five more from his side of the House. McCarthy showed how much he respected the whole investigative process by nominating Jim Jordan and Jim Banks -- two of the Congressmen being investigated for their role in January 6th for crying out loud!!!!

Pelosi rejected them (duh!) -- which led McCarthy, in a huff, to withdraw the names of all the other Republicans he'd recommended. Remember, this was supposed to be about finding out what really happened on January 6th. Isn't it strange that the Republican leadership wouldn't be on-board with it? Makes you wonder why.

The sheer amount of unbridled lack of self awareness that always follows those words is just awe inspiring. These people have no idea just how autistic they are, and how goddamn annoying they are to every single normal person, those who actually know how to interact with society other than through linked-in posts (🤣).

This is Trump bullsh*t that was debunked long ago. I find it interesting how the "I don't want Trump to run again" crowd nevertheless regurgitate his nonsense in order to 'prove' their points.

It’s like these dumb asses took Ricky Bobby too seriously when he said “I said ‘all due respect’ you can say anything you want—it’s in the Geneva convention!!”

These idiots think if they preface anything with “I’m a libertarian/independent” it somehow will absolve them of the shit that’s about to follow.

Lack of self awareness? Like referencing a person that hasn't even posted in this thread?
What does that have to do with a lack of self-awareness? Are you not following this thread? Libertarian reference?

I think most Americans are on board. but they want the whole story and not just the Pelosi Schiff show. I want to know what led up to the riot, who instigated the riot, was the FBI there in the middle of it stirring it up even more, as dozens who were there have said. Who went there with pre planned ideas of inciting a riot. Proud boys, Antifa, FBI insiders, militia groups.
I also want to know why no one did anything to protect the capitol from a riot that they knew was in the planning. We need all the answers if you want to insure it never happens again. Not just how it was planned. Why capitol police are on film waving people into the capitol that they were there to protect.

There's not one question you asked, goodknightfl, that I don't agree with you on! 👍

I understand we've got six more public hearings ahead of us -- the next one beginning next Monday morning -- so I would fully expect that all questions, including yours, will be answered over the next few weeks.

I know you probably consider her 'a traitor,' but it's hard for me to believe a rock-solid Conservative with a Capital "C" like Liz Cheney is going to endorse a one-sided "Pelosi/Schiff" show.

The first public hearing was held tonight. I wasn't sure going in to it whether it would be worth watching or not but it turned out to be pretty compelling TV. In this first, two-hour hearing, the Committee laid out evidence that:
  • Trump was told by both William Barr, his AG, and his top pollster that he'd lost the election fair and square -- yet despite this, he continued to spout his 'Stop the steal' nonsense. Ivanka Trump testified that she has a great deal of respect for Barr and believed him when the Attorney General told her that her father had lost.
  • The insurrection wasn't a 'protest that turned into a riot,' compelling evidence was laid out that it was a pre-planned, orchestrated attack on the Capitol. The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers spear-headed it (fyi, the leaders of these two groups met the night before) and their forces were already in mass at the Capitol before the President even spoke at his 'Stop the Steal' Rally. A number of them gave videotaped testimony they were there at the urging of their President.
  • A number of White House insiders and supporters like Steve Bannon knew what was in store for Jan. 6th. Many of them were recorded the day before the rally on tape or on podcasts saying, "Tomorrow's going to be..."an historic day!" "a WILD scene!" "Trump's comeback" and similar comments which were presented during the hearing.
  • The Capitol police were involved in hand-to-hand combat for hours without the President getting on the phone to make calls for help.
  • The only urgent calls for back-up for the Capitol police came from Vice President Pence.
This was just a few of the facts that were laid out during this first hearing. My understanding is that they plan to have six of these covering different aspects of the Jan. 6th insurrection.
Arent hearings supposed to have defense counsel? Yet this one had none? This is north korean propaganda and thankfully nobody watched (except dumbass libs like you)

THIS ^^^^ is the reason why McCarthy rejected the opportunity to have a 50/50 biparisan committee investigate January 6th. If he turns his back on the whole process, he can cry "North Korean Propaganda!!!" and Chuds like beelit47 will eat it up.
