INTERVIEW: Former UCF WR Stephen Martin

Episode 260 of the Sons of UCF Podcast featured an interview with former UCF WR Stephen Martin. A local kid who grew up going to UCF games, Stephen realized a dream of playing for his hometown team when he walked on in 2020. After battling injuries early, Stephen started making a name on the practice squad before finally seeing the field in 2021.

Widely considered a coach on the field, Stephen relentlessly studied his craft and always looked for ways to make plays, even if they didn't show in the box score. His most memorable play was a 4 yard TD catch from Knights running back Isaiah Bowser at Memphis in 2022.

Stephen also shares some great stories about some of his teammates, including John Rhys Plumlee, Divaad Wilson, and Paul Rubelt.

Andrew Brait: It's a 'dream come true' to play in NCAA postseason ⚾

In his fifth and final season at UCF, Andrew Brait will play in the NCAA Tournament. The infielder and team captain talks about it means to end his career with a berth in a regional and the chance to ultimately advance to the College World Series.

"It was a dream come true," Brait said of UCF's selection to the Tallahassee Regional. "It was always a goal since I've been here. It's something we always knew we could do. To see it finally come true, it's just amazing."

After UCF beat Oklahoma State to win their second game in the Big 12 tournament, Brait felt at that point they had done enough to earn an at-large bid. He said it was like a weight was lifted off their shoulders, though they still wanted to continue to advance and play for the Big 12 championship.

Brait said he quickly became a believer of Rich Wallace.

"He's fantastic," Brait said of UCF's first-year coach. "Since the day he was brought in, we knew he was special. The guys he brought in were special and we'd have a serious opportunity to go far... (Wallace has) charisma. The fight he brings to every practice and game. He's a guy you want to play for."

Brait is the ultimate gamer. During the regular season finale series at Baylor, Brait took a pitch to the face which caused significant bleeding. Moments later, he was back in the game.

"We had to make sure I didn't have a concussion or anything," Brait said. "Coach Wallace came up to me, 'Hey Brait, you ready to go back in?' I'm like, hell yeah."

He'll carry that same attitude to Tallahassee this weekend. UCF begins regional play with Alabama on Friday at 6 p.m.

"I'm so excited," he said. "This is what you dream about. Nothing is going to keep me from playing. That's how I'm going to attack every game."

***Bounce House Weekend Official Thread & Visit Preview 🏈

UCF's mega recruiting extravaganza - Bounce House Weekend - has arrived.

24 official visitors are slated to be on campus beginning Friday with many more visiting unofficially on Saturday.

If Gus Malzahn is successful in securing multiple commitments from this talented group, UCF has a great chance to finish with the top recruiting class in the Big 12. The current group of commitments is already ranked in the top 25.

Here's are a look at the recruitments of the 24 official visitors:

  • Poll
What conference was UCF/FTU in when you started here?

What conf. was UCF in when you began school (or when you went to your 1st game if you didn't attend)

  • Independent - Division II (1970-1975)

    Votes: 6 2.9%
  • Sunshine State Conference (1975-1984)

    Votes: 20 9.5%
  • Independent - Division I (1984-1990)

    Votes: 25 11.9%
  • American South Conference (1990-1991)

    Votes: 2 1.0%
  • Sun Belt Conference (1991-1992)

    Votes: 8 3.8%
  • Tranny America Athletic Conference / Atlantic Sun Conference (1992-2002)

    Votes: 54 25.7%
  • Mid-American Conference / Atlantic Sun Conference (2002-2005)

    Votes: 35 16.7%
  • Conference USA (2005-2013)

    Votes: 47 22.4%
  • American Athletic Conference (2013-2023)

    Votes: 13 6.2%
  • Big 12 Conference (2023-Present)

    Votes: 0 0.0%

It's a bit confusing to organize when you go prior to 2005, as football had its own divisional growth timeline that was separate from the other sports, e.g., from 1984 to 1990 we were DI independent, but for football we were a mix of DII and DI-AA independent. You get the point.

Also, I know that I put a kind-of artificial separator between TAAC/ASUN (1992-2002) and MAC/ASUN (2002-2005). The reality is that football was the only thing that changed in those combined timeframes, joining a conference for the first time in July of 2002. The other sports were all continuously in the TAAC/ASUN from 1992 to 2005. However, I felt that football joining its first conference warranted the separate option; felt like a different era for UCF.

INTERVIEW: One on One with UCF Softball Head Coach Cindy Ball-Malone

UCF Softball Coach Cindy Ball-Malone sat down with Trace Trylko to recap the 2024 season for the Knights. Having a veteran laden team, the Knights were hopeful they could make some noise in their first year of the Big XII conference. Despite some early adversity, the Knights battled and fought all year long, making it to the regional tournament before losing to Auburn in a late-night thriller.

Coach Ball-Malone looks back fondly on the 2024 team, and in particular the 11 seniors who played a pivotal role in helping build a foundation for this program. Although they did not win the last game of the year, Coach takes with her some personal and professional memories that will last a lifetime.
