OT: Dune Part 2

Anybody else geeking out over this movie? Opening this weekend. I have been a fan of the books since I was a teenager. All previous attempts to making this film have been lame. The first movie did a great job of making a very complicated story line understandable without losing too much of the nuance. The trailer for the second looks amazing and the reviews are stellar. I think this is going to rank up there with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings series.

Tribble, O’Leary, and Charlie Strong

Marc Daniels casually dropped a really interesting piece of info, in passing, on The Bridge today about Keith Tribble trying to go behind O’Leary’s back, and the UCF administration’s back, to hire Charlie Strong. Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but that was (FASCINATING) news to me. It bowled me over. I tried searching for threads on here about it, but wasn’t able to find anything. Anyone know more about this? I have to assume this was for the HC position. I don’t know how that wasn’t termination-worthy at the moment it happened. To hire someone without a formal, structured hiring process that considers all possible candidates is bad enough (even though it happens), let alone doing it behind the Administration’s back and before firing O’Leary. Whatever Tribble’s motivations were, it sure doesn’t appear that UCF’s best interests were at the forefront.

Gus Malzahn a Top 3 coach in the Big 12

3. Gus Malzahn -- UCF

"Last year’s 6-7 record was the first losing season
in Gus Malzahn’s 12 years as a college head coach. Malzahn has been close to reaching the mountain top, losing the BCS National Title game in 2013 with Auburn. I suspect UCF will rebound next season."

What the h*ll is wrong with y'all's fanbase???

GUS and UCF just took No. 6 Chokelahoma to the brink on the road at the TOUGHEST PLACE TO PLAY in America this Century, but didn't have enough gas on defense to finish.
.
H*ll, the OU RB was running laterally at the end zone and LITERALLY looking back to the sideline to see if the coaching staff wanted him to down the ball on the 1.

Gus had a bunch of sick players and still gave his team a chance to win. The fact that y'all are blaming Gus for this loss after the Vegas picked Chokelahoma to win by three scores shows how delusional some, not all, of y'all are.

BECAUSE of GUS--not in spite of Gus--did UCF have a chance to win.

I DO NOT believe in moral victories--moral victories are for the church, but what do y'all want???

"Gus Malzahn is a good football coach"

Gary Danielson made that remark during the final game Gus coached in the Iron Bowl. In case you don't understand, that is a backhanded compliment in football.

Good is the enemy of great. Auburn fired Gus because "he didn't win enough." I will focus on that.

At Auburn and at UCF, I witnessed inexplicable "lulls" in offensive production, typically in the second half of games.

(A lot of people who don't know football will say "The other team 'made adjustments'" on defense. But anyone who has coached and knows football knows major adjustments cannot be made in a football game. For example, a team that bases out of a 3-3-5 defense cannot change into a bear front in the middle of an offensive possession UNLESS the team has not practiced the formation. You can make minor in-game adjustments, such as with play calling, manipulating alignment, reading keys, etc., but major in-game adjustments can only be used ONLY IF they have been practiced or are already built into your system. For example, if you practiced and ran a front or blitz against an earlier opponent, you can jump into it within an offensive drive because the players have already practiced it and remember it. Or you can practice for a defense to be used before halftime and practice for a totally different defense to change to in the second half, but you cannot change to a new defense at halftime that you never practiced.)

Point is... Minor adjustments do not account for the lulls in offensive production. It is almost like Gus goes into a game with a plan and never deviates. It happened again in the second half last night.

I didn't get to watch last night's game, but I cannot explain the box score. I understand the failure of the defense. UCF was without Corey Thornton, Jarvis Ware, Ja'Cari Henderson, and DeJordan Mask. I knew it was limited. But I don't know why the offense featured Javon Baker so much. UCF had only 33 rushes for just 169 yards. RJ Harvey averaged 8 yards per carry and had only 15 carries. Haynes King outrushed John Rhys Plumlee in terms of carries and yardage. Georgia Tech ranked 128th in rush defense. Whoever called plays for UCF ran a "balanced" offense, but shouldn't have.

Moving forward, Gus needs to do the following things to improve the trajectory of the UCF program:

No. 1, Hire Gary Patterson as DC.
No. 2, Hire Terry Bowden and Scott Frost as offensive analysts. Bowden is one the best game day coaches in college football. Y'all are enamored with Frost so even though he is worthless, his hire will rebuild a lot trust in the fan base.

EDIT: Frost did recruit Hawaii well. I will give him that.

Maybe then Gus can be great again.

Post-Gus Auburn is the Greatest Sh*tshow on Earth

I normally do not post about Auburn unless it pertains directly to UCF, but the stuff going on at Auburn is "imaginable."

Carnell Williams and Zac Etheridge are rumored/alledged to have played some role in the Jarquez Hunter sex tape. What role I don't know and won't speculate.

This thread pertains to UCF in regard to Etheridge is now at rival Houston, three-titled coach Ron Roberts is now at Florida, and Carnell is probably somewhere having a wine cooler with Scott Frost.

This is the kind of stuff you don't hear about with Gus as head coach.

Retired UCF Professor Dr. Bill Callarman has died

Saw the FB update shared with the Heartbeat FB group.

UCFAA gave out the the Dr. Bill Callarman Perseverance Award. He was the Knights' former NCAA Faculty Representative.

He was always a staple at UCF sporting events and a mentor for many students and student-athletes.

It makes me nuts watching this....

team in pregame warmups. They waste the time with 8, 9, or 10 dunks and trick dunks instead of taking game type shots, Matt Williams and Darren Green in pregame would go to the other end of the court before the visitors came out and took game shots one after the other. How many dunks is each player going to get during the game? Zero to maybe 1 if lucky for a couple of guys. We have a bunch who shoot bricks but they can dunk in pregame.

RIP Dr. Callarman

Former UCF Professor emeritus Dr. Callarman passed away this weekend. He was an exceptional person in the classroom, with the teams, and in retirement with his many volunteer activities. For those lucky to have known him well, this is a big loss to the UCF community. RIP Dr. C, I know you’ll be cheering for your Knights from above.
