That game was entirely on the defense.
Here is the recap if you didn't see it.
Goal 1 was on Bishop and set a bad tone, but the guys weren't clearing out the slot at all. At least 2 of the goals, there are 3 Lightning around the net, but the lone Ranger gets the puck and takes 3 shots on Bishop and nobody lays a finger on him. The goalie is responsible for the first shot, the defense is responsible for everything after that. Once the goalie is down and extended, he can't just move to the next shot like a skater can unless he has a slinky for a spine like Hasek used to.
When a goalie goes to his back it is for 2 reasons. A desperation move or he doesn't know where the puck is and is just trying to get big on the ice. The one where the
puck goes around the next twice and he is still on his back. He throws himself backward for an amazing save and the puck goes behind the net. You see him get big in what goalies call the cross position because he has no idea the puck is behind the net and nobody is talking to him. Furthermore, nobody clears out the Ranger that ultimately scores. And it was a sequence of about 2-3 seconds and never gets skated around the net twice, it goes back and comes back out.
The guys were skating in mud in that 3rd period. I really think that Lundquist stoning them in the second took the speed out of their legs. He made some ridiculous point blank saves and you could see it taking the wind out of their sails. That's where you need a big guy like Hedman or Boyle to do a little headhunting and light somebody up with a big hit to fire the guys back up.
Fact is, Bishop is a Top 10 goalie, but Lundquist is a Top 3 goalie and you can only outscore teams for so long before that difference shows itself. All of that being said, Game 7 is Game 7. Throw everything out the window because guys are going to be coming at top speed the entire game and it is going to be a game of lucky breaks that makes the difference. Don't be surprised by a 3-2 game with the winner coming in the last 10 minutes of regulation.
