"What was he doing wrong?"

Should he have been fired over it?
Hmmmmm....let me think about this...harassing the citizens he's sworn to protect and serve for no other reason than 'driving while Black.'.....Yep, I'd fire his racist ass.
I'd be fine with it if he was, but then he'd just get a job as a cop elsewhere and do the same thing or worse.
Tell us again how the system isn't broken. It's just a few "bad apples," right?

Well of course its just a few bad apples. You aren't suggesting that an entire group of people should be judged by the actions of a few, are you?

You're the one suggesting that a racist cop gets fired and rehired by some other department. How does that keep happening?

And I'm curious, the two members of the Buffalo special forces team made up entirely of Buffalo PD deliberately pushed a 75 year old man who fell to the ground and suffered brain injuries. When the two were charged with assault and released after a court appearance, the entire team applauded their two brothers outside the courthouse and subsequently resigned from the team (but kept their PD jobs of course.)

What were they all applauding?

People outside the police force just dont understand sometimes you need to shove an old man down, look and see him bleeding from his ear and walk away and then lie and say he tripped and then walk that back when video is released. His brothers were showing their support because the media and libs just dont get that in the line of duty you need to make quick decisions. Sometimes you have to nearly kill an old man and try to cover it up.

How does it keep happening? Because most people don't want to be cops.

I'd be fine with having a national registry for complaints against cops, but even if we had one its hard to say whether the complaints are valid or not. I think body cams are definitely a move in the right direction so that we have better evidence, but even with that there are flaws.

Cellphone videos and body cams are mounting evidence that there is a lot of deplorable shit going on out there in the name of 'police just doing their jobs.'

At first glance, I thought the 'defund the police' business was complete BS. But when I started reading about it and understood what its proponents were actually proposing versus the angst-ridden "the sky is falling" cries of the police unions and their like-minded supporters, it actually makes a lot of of sense.

Ban police unions.

Video of the Atlanta situation is sure to be divisive.

Man had taken police taser and was running away from cops with taser in hand. He points taser backward and fires it, missing cop. Cop then pulls weapon and fires at man.

Obviously firing any weapon at a police officer is an issue but the cop should know that his taser isnt a multi use weapon. Once it is fired and missed the threat is over. The dude was running away. Im pretty sure theres going to be a fair amount of disagreement on this but FTP, lock em up.

I see you left out the part where this guy was also brawling with the officers on video.

Are you prepared to tell me that a white person doesn’t get fired upon if they wrestle with a cop, resist arrest, take a weapon from them, run, and try to use that weapon?

I don’t know Crazy. If they remove qualified immunity from police, officers are going to be buried under civil lawsuits, some warranted but most frivolous. Even successful defenses bankrupt the officer because the people suing aren’t likely to be able to cover the attorney’s fees. The cities aren’t going to pay the officer’s defense fees, so a union is probably the only way they can even begin to cover that expense. Especially if insurance companies bow to the PC mob and don’t offer malpractice insurance.

Im saying no one should be killed in that scenario. Once that taser is fired the threat is gone, the dude is running. I watched the video. There is time between the taser being fired and the cop drawing his gun. He should know that weapons range and if its so dangerous that it warrants deadly force in retaliation he shouldnt have been close enough to get hit.

How did we get to this point, sk8?

When you poo-poo an officer choking a black man with a knee to the neck for nearly 9 minutes -- that includes 2 minutes after the guy passed out -- because that black man had a record and drugs in his system, what do you expect citizens, particularly minority citizens to do?

Did you watch the Deputy Bubba video posted above? Just another "bad apple," right? Or What about the Buffalo police I asked you about? Just a bunch of "bad apples"?

It's past time for putting up with this nonsense.

I was only being half serious.

The guy in Buffalo had it coming. Thats not an example of bad apples in the police force. Anybody that goes to a protest and tries to instigate violence, then confronts the cops deserves the slight nudge that he got.

This Atlanta situation pisses me off. The police chief has resigned over it. The guy is a fcuking moron, if you resist arrest, punch officers, steal their weapon and fire it at them (I know it was a taser not a gun), I don’t give a flying fcuk what they do to you after that. I also don’t give a damn what color anyone involved was because it doesn’t make a damn difference. Minneapolis can wait for their social worker to show up after he punches the cops and tries to tase them. I guess the cops should’ve just tried to de-escalate and get punched in the face some more instead.

Once that taser is fired you have no reason to shoot a dude in the back. He had failed a field sobriety test. He was drunk. He should be awaiting trial for his drunken decision or have a warrant out for his arrest, but he shouldnt be dead right now.

Sometimes I think we lose sight of the level of crime you need to commit to be sentenced to death in court and how easy it is for a cop to kill someone.

Brawls With Cops.
Takes Cops Weapon.
Fires Weapon At Cops.
Outrage ensues cause he got shot.

Lol What? I guess the phrase play stupid games win stupid prizes is gone.

There is some serious mental gymnastics being done here to justify the actions of assaulting police. Probably the same people who were mad that Miami PD choked some people out who were hitting them with skateboards.

I dont see anything in that video that should be divisive. The dude pointed a weapon after fighting with the cops.

you do realize a taser is not a non-lethal method, rather a less-lethal method. It can and does still kill. But sweeping that aside the cop should have continued to get his ass kicked and let the guy flee because shooting is wrong? Come on man. The minute he reached for any weapon he loses his right to cry victim.

Did you watch the video? He shot him the second he turned around and fired the taser.... it’s not like he chased him a half mile, said f this, then shot him. You may be right that we lose sight of the crime needed to be sentenced to death, but we also lose sight of the fact that police are human that are trying to do their jobs and go home to their families. If you punch them in the face, steal a weapon, and fire it at them then whatever that officer needs to do to end the encounter is good with me.

And it was his own actions that led to him being dead, not awaiting trial. The police didn't deserve to be put in that situation.

I know you guys don't realize this, but almost every time you present new evidence that all cops are bad because a black man was killed, you're also perpetuating the stereotype that all black men are bad.

I could post hundreds of videos of cops tasing people who are sitting in cars and wont exit. If its such a big deal then maybe it shouldn't be used for something like a person not wanting to exit a vehicle after a traffic stop.

You shouldnt just execute people who are running away because youre too slow to catch them.

He didnt even turn around to fire it. He swing his arm backward and fired it and kept running. Cop knew it was a single use taser because it was his weapon. Responds by shooting the dude in the back as he kept running away.

That would make football inherently more interesting.

I could post thousands of videos of moving goalposts too. We don’t do that in a rationale debate because that’s not how they work. Just like the generalizations and straw mans you are using.

Here are the facts, which once again are void of feelings:

Man resists arrest for intoxication and fights cop.
Man grabs cops weapon and discharges It at cop.
Man tries to flee and is shot by cop.

The natural progression there seems to flow logically based on escalation.

That being said, I will play your game. If the Taser would have hit would It have been okay then? Or since It missed he should have waited until he got tased before shooting?

At what point did we as a society get away from actions have consequences? This man made a bad choice to reach for a weapon and paid with his life. Maybe if he made the choice to stay with fists he gets tased and not shot. Choices have consequences.

It's single use. Once it missed it was no longer a threat. Was the cop afraid it might get thrown at him so he started blasting?

Sorry, it seems we're going to have different views of shooting a previously armed, now unarmed, man in the back as he runs away.

Or maybe he should’ve made the choice to put his hands behind his back. Had he made that choice then as @fried-chicken said:

He should be awaiting trial for his drunken decision or have a warrant out for his arrest, but he shouldnt be dead right now.

We clearly do. What you’re saying is, If I shoot at you and miss but then throw down my gun and run away you have no right to shoot me. Which is just a mind-blowing standpoint. It means we should discard all previous actions and just go second by second which is just not how the world works.

And that’s not even the situation though. The guy didn’t deploy the taser and get shot 20 seconds later, he turned toward the officer and the officer drew his gun immediately

Yeah thats a mistake. Is the punishment for that mistake death? Seems so for this dude and many others like him. Cops just kill people for anything now including running away.

You think this guy got killed for running away?? He got killed because he punched two cops, stole a weapon, and deployed that weapon at them!
