Georgia Antivoting Law

And why does this part of the law exist. What "voters fraud" happens with free water?
That’s not to prevent fraud it’s to prevent people from being pressured within 150 feet of the polls. This isn’t hard to understand.

Do you want the Proud Boys to go “hand out water” at inner city polling locations?

The bottom line is nobody who isn’t voting or working at the polls needs to be in that space interacting with voters as they’re walking in to vote. That opens the door to a subjective view of whether or not they’re engaging in voter intimidation or bribery. It’s much easier to shut the door on all of it.

The standard closing time is 5pm. They can opt to stay open later but the state could have made it 6 or 7 or 8 if they wanted people to have access since they restricted mail in options.
That’s for early voting and it’s been that way for years. They replaced the verbiage that says “during normal business hours” with the specific “9 am to 5 pm” - which actually expands the hours that rural counties will have to be open for voting, since many of them only opened part time.

There is no such provision that restricts any county from being open later than 5, and absolutely none of them will be closed at 5 on Election Day.

I may have had to provide an ID for my job many years ago. Don’t remember if it was a drivers license or social security card and haven’t had a use for one recently. Opened my checking account 20 years ago. I don’t need to present an ID to maintain it and it’s constantly used. Yes years back I may have had to present an ID in person for one off verification of something one time to start up but it is not something that is requested continuously beyond that.
Have you driven a car on a public road recently?

I have been driving for a long time and haven’t presented an ID to anyone. I do have a drivers license since it is literally a license allowing you to drive and proof of a valid drivers license is legally required to operate a vehicle. Operation of a vehicle isn’t a protected fundamental right in this country either and I am willing to pay the licensing and registration fees for the privilege. This has nothing to do with the fact for everyday life, purchases, bank transactions, picking up prescriptions, buying event tickets, paying a mortgage, etc, you aren’t required to have an ID. I’m not even opposed to having an ID be used in verification of a voter. But there are other ways to identify a voter than a government ID too. The ways we identify people for every other transaction in life.

Just because you haven’t had cause to present your ID to someone doesn’t mean you don’t have to have one.

But on the list of things you mentioned, you do have to present ID to pick up a prescription if it’s a controlled substance. You have to present ID to buy Sudafed in just about any state. You don’t have to present ID to pay your mortgage, but I’m quite sure you presented one at some point in the application or closing process.

How can a voter be verified without ID? You say there are ways... what are they? Would you be singing a different tune if I showed up to your precinct, said I was you and voted, and when you showed up they wouldn’t let you vote because “you” already did? How do you stop that if we’re just going by the honor system?

I said I have no problem with showing an ID to vote. Was just calling out the clown who said you have to show an ID at will call of Amway Center as if that is a comparable situation to a protected right in this country like voting. I mentioned I haven’t used an ID in years. I maintain an active drivers license because it’s legally required to drive. I do think if it is a required stipulation to vote than it should be provided free of charge. And yes there are ways to verify identity that we used every day (PINs, passwords, security questions, address verification, signatures, Face ID, etc.). In fact if you go to get a government photo ID, guess what, you don’t have to provide a government photo ID to get it.

Also no you don’t need a photo ID to pick up a controlled substance. I have done this by providing name and address. By law a pharmacist can ask for an ID if they suspect something suspicious is going on but are not required to. And to pay for it I used my card and identified myself either by signature (credit) or PIN (debit).

The government already provides a voter registration card to every register voter. I’d think that along with some other verification like birthdate, phone number, address, last 4, etc. should suffice. It shouldn’t be more difficult to vote than it is to call my bank and authorize account activity.

GA offers free photo ID.

  • Twenty-four states require patients to show ID before picking up a controlled substance prescription, either in all cases or under specific circumstances (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d.).

And all states require ID for alcohol sales, although it’s not always enforced for people who look old.

I posted this in the wrong thread...

, I was listening to Andrew Wilkow on the XM on Thursday and he had Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia on the radio. The Governor of Georgia explained this horrific law. one, the drivers license number is going forward going to be used as signature verification. Two, anyone need a state ID , it's FREE. Three, they have instituted drop boxes that will be video monitored and ran solely by each county's election board .Four they extended times in which a person can vote and five , there is zero interaction within 150 feet of the polling place.

Kemp said Counties are free to give out water. You are free to order a pizza, door dash , have a picnic ,bring your own water , but people can't interact with you once inside the buffer zone. He said if there is a line that requires anyone to wait 3 or 4 hours then there is a problem. They also allocated more money for more voting machines to cut down wait times going forward.

After listening to this irrational baffoon about how they have improved access , codified monitored dropped boxes and giving away free IDs. I can see why everyone is up in arms. He has the gall to make voting more accessible, more secure, the results more trusted by the voters , and run by the county board of elections.

I agree with everything Kemp said. Including it is ridiculous that in 2021 the age of technology that any voting precinct has lines hours long on Election Day. It’s a problem and not acceptable.

That's what the bill is trying to address. More machines, more hours, more days.

The MLB took the All-Star game out of Atlanta because the only possible interpretation of this bill is that it’s racist. Unless you compare it to most states before last year and outside of a partisan context, then it just makes practical sense. If we didn’t have social interpreters/propaganda machines, like Abrams, Biden and The NY Times, no one would have said anything about this bill. It’s crazy to me how certain people can make the call and so many people just lose critical thinking abilities and fall into political formation like good little programmed Teddy Ruxpins. The same thing they
claim the right does with Fox News and Tucker Carlson.

The MLB and the NBA love to take the moral high ground about justice when it’s easy and doesn’t cost them any money. Both of those leagues are beholden to China and would never say a word about their human rights issues. Trump was a flagrant buffoon of a president, but had the balls to call out China. Biden alongside the MLB and NBA just kowtow to whatever to the CCP demands.

Meh, all this hyper partisan crap works for the people in charge and they aren’t going to change it any time soon. So everyone go to your preferred corner of the internet, get your dogma properly adjusted and meet back here tomorrow for the same thing over again. Just like Sam the Sheepdog and Ralph Wolf, clock in and gets to chasin.

Just a reminder that conservatism is a dying ideology, the Republican candidate for President has only won the popular vote once in the past 8 elections, and the last Republican nominee lost by more than 7 million votes.

Why do you think corporations, entities designed to maximize profits, are coming out against GOP suppression bills? Because those are dying dollars. They're hitching on to the money. Also, trying to gain favor before Biden increases their taxes, but that's another conversation for another day.

The leagues will take the action that maximizes profits. If players and fans are mostly opposed to something the leagues will follow suit. They aren’t guided by any moral compass, but the almighty dollar.

if you are still trying to justify the big lie you have issues and the World’s biggest Con Man did amazing damage to this country. but I thought most educated and sensible people were smart enough to not fall for it

subject: "Georgia Antivoting Law"

the Law that:
1) Extends early voting by at least one day (weekend day)
2) Requires polling locations to increase personnel and/or buy more voting machines if lines are too long
3) Upholds a persons right to request a mail in ballot with no real reason needed

Got it

In 2021 to require an ID isn't high technology.
But there was more to the bill than that. Why was the Secretary of State removed as the top election official? Certainly that didn't have a thing to do with the current Republican Secretary of State telling our former President to shove it when he asked him (nicely) to find him another 11,000 votes, right? :)

I don't like anything that can be undermined by an individual and it doesn't matter the political leaning of a group. My solution is scanning your license in person to confirm the template is valid along with the barcode then using facial recognition...then straight into voting. Done. No stupid manual vote counting or anything that can be easily altered or gamed.
He says while ignoring my question about the change in the state's election law regarding the current (and future) Secretaries of State.

Just answered it. If my solution was implemented there is no need to discuss further because it's out of individual politicians hands and everyone can sleep knowing that the system wasn't gamed.
1. The system wasn't 'gamed.' Dammit, more and more minorities are voting in Georgia!!!
2. God bless America, last November's election was in the hands of a Republican Secretary of State who believes in the Constitution. If this law had been in effect back then, who knows what votes the person in charge would have found for Trump.

Given your focus on a fair election, I bet after Trump's shenanigan was exposed, you 'slept better that night because the system wasn't allowed to be 'gamed,' right? :)

Exactly. Having anybody other than the secretary of state be in charge of the election is Jim Crow on steroids, PCP, and meth. It is appalling that in this day and age somebody wouldn't recognize how racist this policy is. They might as well bring out the firehoses and German shepards.

Rambling nonsense. We don't even know the real votes because democrats want to keep the fraud door wide open. Now you're glad the "evil" corporations are jumping on the democrat side because they want to have a say in how wrecked they will get with all these high tax policies. Corporations always played both sides btw.

You're trying to act like dementia man is so popular. He got booed at the super bowl. Never gets out and does a real press conference. Approval rating at 48% after a record voter turnout a few months prior....wink, wink.

BDS

Biden is at 53% approval

He got over 7 million more votes than the incumbent with 53% approval. And he's living rent free in your noggin.

“Brian Kemp has abused his power as secretary of state of Georgia to purge the voting rolls of Georgia primarily of black and brown people,” said Joe Beasley, an Atlanta civil rights activist. “If he had one ounce of integrity, he would have stepped aside as secretary of state, because you can’t referee an election in which you stand to be a winner.”

Sorry I was wrong. Dementia man is down to a 47% approval rating. This from a few months ago getting "record" turnout with a lot of unverified votes. Wink, wink. Only 29% strongly approve dementia man. Shook is in that 29%. 😁

Yes, you’ve responded a couple of times. But that doesn’t mean you answered my question.
I dont know what to tell you then. You asked me why they changed the head of elections from the SOS and I said that jts because it has created a conflict of interest in the past. Does that not make sense to you?

Who says the Secretary of State has to be in charge? I am ok if it is part of his job description, But also Ok with it being under some one else's.

Uh. Everything can be undermined by an individual. You don’t think there are people manning these machines? You think facial recognition is the answer, but I sometimes have to enter passcode on my phone if Face ID doesn’t register. You think any of these things are foolproof? They aren’t. And the manual counting is the most secure as there is oversight from multiple individuals in the process. You have solutions in search of a problem.

They moved the MLB All Star game to Colorado, where voters still have to show ID. On the other hand, you can’t make “racist” laws if there are no people to be racist against. It’s all white people and mountain lions. Lesson learned, MLB.

In the case of Georgia, one has to ask the question: why change it?

I'm sure the Secretary of State's unwillingness to "find votes" for Trump had nothing to do with it, right?*

There’s no reason to believe it did have anything to do with it. Kemp wasn’t on Trump’s side in pursuing overturning GA results. I don’t know where you’re even getting this from. Trump retweeted someone saying both Raffensperger and Kemp should be in jail. So it’s your contention that now Kemp is suddenly dressing down and demoting the GA sec of state AFTER there’s no more pressure from the POTUS to do it?

Under the new system, there’s nobody for Trump to call and pressure, unless he wants to do that to the whole legislature.

Wouldn’t you think it would be more difficult to corrupt/blackmail/bribe an entire group of people than just one elected official?

The leadership positions in Georgia are shifting purple and potentially blue based on 2020 voting trends while the legislative body is solidly red and will be for some time. I think this is your answer.

Colorado had Universal Vote by Mail before Covid 19. posted on this board before that they should be the model. Everyone gets the mail option and they don’t limit drop boxes . They also keep the paper ballots 2 years after the election. It saves them money and they have high turnout.
